Because… Madigan!

Thursday, Oct 13, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Media advisory…

State Representative Deanne Mazzochi (HD 45), along with candidates Jack Vrett (HD 53), Stefanie Hood (HD 42), and Michelle Smith (HD 97), will host a news conference via zoom and broadcast on BlueRoomStream on Thursday, October 13 at 10:30am.

Mazzochi will introduce three House Republican candidates running against machine-backed politicians and how this election cycle represents the best opportunity in decades to remove the stain of corruption from our state politics.

* Isabel ran the press conference audio through Otter.com and the rough transcript shows 40 mentions of former House Speaker Michael Madigan’s name in 25 minutes, including this question submitted by a reporter and read aloud

Q: We have our first question from the media and I’ll put it out there. Do you folks think Madigan is pulling any strings behind the scenes? Or is it an all new group which has learned the machine ways?

Rep. Mazzochi: I’m not going to speculate as to what Mike Madigan is or isn’t doing. You’d probably get a better answer through some recordings at the US Attorney’s office or at a table near a bathroom hallway in a Southside restaurant. But what we have seen is, when it comes to the vendors, the tactics, the styling, it’s the same, the same old, same old Madigan routine and machine politics that’s going on. You know, again, when you look at where people are getting their funding, it’s the same old special interest groups. It’s the same old demands. And it’s the hope is that the people in Illinois decided they don’t want the same old outcome, and that they’re finally going to look past what I would call the shrieky emotional negative advertisements and the false statements that are always made about Republican candidates that never accurately represent our record, and which always distort the records of the candidates on the Democratic side of the aisle, we can actually get some real change in Illinois.

Thoughts?

Mazzochi seems unhinged. A table near a bathroom hallway in a Southside restaurant.”??? Seriously?

  2. - Regulat democrat - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 11:32 am:

She is probably referring to Dannys pizza on Archer

  3. - Jimbo2 - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 11:33 am:

The link to the reporters question asks me for a password. I wanted to listen to it to see who the “reporter” was that asked that question?

=== She is probably referring to Dannys pizza on Archer ===

LOL I doubt it. That’s a Tabares place, not a Madigan place.

  5. - Jerry - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 11:39 am:

Is Madigan som kind of Sith Lord as portrayed in Revenge of the Sith?

  6. - JS Mill - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 11:43 am:

Madigan will forever live, rent free, in the head of the ILGOP.

They have unwittingly created his legacy.

  7. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 11:44 am:

The film franchise “Halloween” ends its run that began in 1978

The ghost/villain Michael Myers, after 44 years will finally be put to rest.

    Madigan lives on.

And there’s a wonder why the GOP is a super-minority party?

    Not really.

The hollow GOP here with this shows they lack any majority policy position, and only are trying to keep a base of angry voters that weren’t going anywhere anyway.

  8. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 11:45 am:

I wonder if this ongoing Madigan fixation is a result of internal polling, or is it just plain old laziness? Madigan’s been gone a while now, so do they just focus on the fact that he’s still hugely unpopular among their base voters and will keep milking that as long as possible? You’d think by now they’d have come up with some variations of “beholden to billionaire JB Pritzker” attacks. I’m not sure if JB doesn’t rile up republican voters as much, or maybe they’re just too lazy to bother creating a new attack playbook.

  9. - Roads Scholar - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 11:46 am:

It encapsulates well why the Illinois GOP is wandering in the wilderness—the party is full of grievances that bear little relation to people’s actual concerns.

“Do you folks think Madigan is pulling any strings behind the scenes? Or is it an all new group which has learned the machine ways?”

What kind of question is that? Doesn’t sound like a reporter, sounds like someone who is setting the table for their friend to offer up her talking points.

Oh, for God sakes. He’s gone. He’s awaiting trial. He’s not Emperor Palpatine. Give. It. A. Rest.

I’ve been doing some walking for Dem legislative candidates. I have not been hearing Madigan’s name at the doors…he’s come up a couple times, but it’s a fraction of what I used to hear.

Having said that, my guess is the “Blame Madigan” narrative still moves the needle in polling, or we wouldn’t be seeing it in the Supreme Court advertising.

What is everyone else hearing at the door on Madigan?

  14. - Skeptic - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 11:54 am:

And here I thought crime was the big issue. Silly me.

  15. - Hannibal Lecter - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 12:10 pm:

=== What is everyone else hearing at the door on Madigan? ===

People still knock doors for the HDems? That’s news to me! LOL

==I would call the shrieky emotional negative advertisements and the false statements that are always made about Republican candidates that never accurately represent our record. . .==

You mean the record where you only say “No”? Or the record where you refuse to denounce those who support the leader who tried to overthrow an election? What record are we talking about?

  17. - Hannibal Lecter - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 12:12 pm:

It depends upon whose door you’re knocking on - hard D’s are unlikely to criticize MJM - try the R’s

  19. - Amalia - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 12:21 pm:

I’m not sure that this is their best play, but it is a play they have. If I were them, I would use it as well. Wall. Mud.

  20. - TheInvisibleMan - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 12:21 pm:

I can’t speak for all the other candidates, but I do know that Michelle Smith in HD 97 has caused at least some local former elected republicans in that area to instead support her Democratic opponent. Her short track record as a school board president within that district was abysmal.

“But Madigan” is just a placeholder for where these candidates should be talking about their own accomplishments and plans, but they don’t have any.

  21. - Curious citizen - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 12:28 pm:

Um, running against Madigan while he was in office gave Illinois Republicans a superminority in the General Assembly. Do they really expect a different result by running against the man after he has left office?

  22. - Walker - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 3:02 pm:

    Lady M makin her move

Doing that. Hitting all who have voted in 2 of last 3 generals.

===Coli his teamster buddy was in today’s news…===

    “Who?”

    - voters

If Coli being sentenced flips a vote, that vote was never for a Dem anyway, lol

  25. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 3:20 pm:

“Republicans would want a 12 year old incest victim to carry a pregnancy to term, but Dems… and Madigan…”

Not one wonder that those who still revel in a chance to invoke Madigan… or Coli… can’t grasp that suburban women might be over Madigan right now.

    (Raises hand)

  27. - Soccermom - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 3:46 pm:

So Terra Costa Howard is being backed by the Madigan machine. I don’t know who would be more surprised by that — Costa Howard or Madigan.

  28. - Stalling - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 3:52 pm:

Illinois does not reflect the Mazzochi Republican playbook. The party of fear, hate and lies.

I feel the GOP frustration that no matter how bad D’s govern, IL is still dark blue.

Agree. GOP should consider Madigan irrelavant.

  32. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 8:47 pm:

    ===IL is still dark blue.===

Not even remotely true. GOP choices are poor for voters. That’s the struggle for the party.

  33. - AFSCME Steward - Thursday, Oct 13, 22 @ 11:14 pm:

When they nominate bad candidates with no ideas, Madigan is all they have. The ILGOP needs to take a serious look at who they’ve become & why. Madigan is gone. He may be heading to jail, but he is not a major concern for most Illinois voters. A dearth of ideas and a dissension into extremism has driven most people away. Running ads linking Dems to Madigan will not lure very many voters back into their camp.
