Pritzker’s new ad features Highland Park Mayor: “Darren Bailey has no business being our governor”

Tuesday, Oct 18, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering: On July 4th, my community saw the face of evil. The magnitude of the devastation will last for years.

But with the work of public safety personnel, the support of Governor Pritzker, and so many others, the people of Highland Park are finding strength in the aftermath of trauma.

But even as the shooter was still at large, Darren Bailey said it was time to “move on.” And he raised funds for his campaign raffling off assault weapons like the one used here.

Darren Bailey has no business being our governor.

    Strong and to the point.

  2. - Second Chance - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 11:22 am:

His best ad of the cycle

  3. - The Truth - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 11:25 am:

Wow, JB saving the big punches for the end. I let out an audible “hoooooo boy”. That image of Bailey smiling with the big gun will cut through.

  4. - Norseman - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 11:26 am:

Good spot. It will add another data point to vote against Bailey.

  5. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 11:28 am:

Only the first abortion ad that Pritzker ran is better.

This is second, miles ahead of whatever anyone would like to place third.

    It’s an A

The images, the cut to parts, the tone, tenor, it’s really a special ad with an important message, and tasteful towards the victims.

    A

  6. - Give Me A Break - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 11:32 am:

Best ad of this cycle. Not sure it can be topped.

  7. - Amalia - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 11:38 am:

    A. Bailey’s comment was ridiculous and telling.

  8. - Socially DIstant Watcher - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 11:39 am:

If Bailey is going to join the ranks of Illinois Republican governors, he has to do well in the area around Highland Park. This ad ensures that he won’t.

  9. - Jocko - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 11:58 am:

Oof. This one leaves a mark.

Maybe one of Darren’s ‘rabbi friends’ will cut a spot touting his qualifications. /S

  10. - slow down - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:00 pm:

    A. This is the kind of ad that resonates in the suburbs and for good reason.

  11. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:00 pm:

Instead of going with the traditional “thoughts and prayers” GOP messaging in response to another mass shooting, Bailey went to the next level with “let’s move on” before the dead bodies were even removed from the scene.

He earned this hit. A+ for the ad.

  12. - JS Mill - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:05 pm:

    A. This is what I wanted from team Pritzker. Keep your foot pressed on the gas as hard as you can.

Totally true, no hyperbole. Great ad.

  13. - SAP - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:05 pm:

“public safety personnel”? I would have come out and said “police and firefighters”. Still a very strong ad though.

  14. - Pundent - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:08 pm:

It’s an A and it hits to the core of Bailey’s campaign centered around crime. When the gunman was at large and leadership was needed, Darren Bailey said we should “move on.” Powerful stuff.

  15. - Rudy’s teeth - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:10 pm:

    Rate A
Bailey’s crass “move on “ indicates a lack of empathy and compassion. Then, Bailey poses with a rifle to fundraise for his campaign.

Time to fold the tent, Darren. The circus has left town.

  16. - Montrose - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:11 pm:

It’s going to be hard for Bailey to make up those two points he’s behind Pritzker with ads like this.

  17. - jackmac - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:13 pm:

    A-plus. Spot on.

  18. - Dotnonymous - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:15 pm:

Plain and direct…catches the ear of the barely listening.

  19. - Responsa - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:15 pm:

It’s a decent ad. But some here may be overlooking that Mayor Rotering has issues of her own which make her a less than perfect spokesperson this particular election cycle. Her primary election shenanigans around running for IL Supreme Ct. (which were well chronicled on Cap Fax before she lost) will now remind and likely weaken other ads by Democrats in other important races such as who is and who is not “qualified” to be an Illinois Supreme Court judge. I give the ad a B-.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:18 pm:

===Mayor Rotering has issues of her own===

If one is going to “deep dive” to discredit an ad that quotes a candidate that wanted to “move on” from a mass shooting, that person, deep diving, ain’t voting against a mass shooter apologist.

  21. - Cubs in '16 - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:19 pm:

===Mayor Rotering has issues of her own===

Which will mean next to nothing outside of the readers of this blog.

  22. - G'Kar - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:25 pm:

===Mayor Rotering has issues of her own===

Most voters do not read Capitol Fax (they should, though) and I 99% sure, especially if they are from downstate, that those voters don’t know much of anything about Rotering and “primary election shenanigans”. But, they have heard of Bailey, Highland Park and Bailey’s response, and assault rifles.

The ad is a solid A.

  23. - Pundent - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:26 pm:

=Mayor Rotering has issues of her own=

The average person will see this as a powerful message and won’t engage in the mental gymnastics you just went through.

  24. - Jenny - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:29 pm:

I’ve been waiting for this ad. Bailey and the GOP are going to get destroyed in Lake County and they have no one to blame but themselves. Not sure how you win when you lose a County this size by a sizeable margin. This ad will play well in Cook, the other collar counties and in urban areas south of I80. No amount of sleeping over in the Hancock Tower will erase the Bailey playing with his toy assault rifle from the minds of parents concerned that their kids school will be the next assault weapon mass shooting target. Pump up the volume!

  25. - Vote Quimby - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:32 pm:

I give the ad an A, like many others above. Strong, direct, to the point, respectful of the victims, pointing out Bailey’s fondness for gun raffles. It highlights exactly why Team JB was pushing for Bailey in the primary…. I’m guessing they could sense he would make a serious error in speaking, of which they could then take advantage.

  26. - Lulu in Lake - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:39 pm:

Any issues with Rotering mean nothing to the average voter. This ad is very effective: short, sharp, to the point. Well done.

  27. - JoeMaddon - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:49 pm:

**will now remind and likely weaken other ads by Democrats in other important races**

I honestly have no idea what this means.

  28. - Allen - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 12:57 pm:

So many political ads regularly lie or attempt to mislead the voters. But ads like this for Bailey (or Donald) require no lying or attempts to mislead, just replay what they say or do.

  29. - So_Ill - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 1:11 pm:

Powerful. That’s a really good ad.

  30. - DuPage Dad - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 1:15 pm:

    The perfect ad.

  31. - Responsa - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 1:23 pm:

==I honestly have no idea what this means.==

Yesterday Rich specifically commented on the polling in the Illinois Supreme Court races and today Isabel posted an entire thread on the Supreme Court race issues. You might want to start there.

  32. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 1:27 pm:

===Yesterday Rich specifically commented on the polling in the Illinois Supreme Court races and today Isabel posted an entire thread on the Supreme Court race issues. You might want to start there.===

The ILSC race is framed around “Madigan” vs. “Unqualified” and “Abortion”

So, your ridiculousness is still about supporting a candidate that’s a mass shooting apologist.

    Try again, please.

  33. - The Velvet Frog - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 1:34 pm:

I still have no idea what that’s supposed to mean. The idea that this ad is going to hurt people running for the court or anything else is absurd.

  34. - Boomer remover - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 2:04 pm:

    Jb= winner= leader= POTUS

  35. - Lucky Pierre - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 2:24 pm:

Well it might be a perfect ad for Democrats but it’s hardly an October surprise that the Democratic Mayor of Highland Park who lost her Supreme Court primary, is supporting JB

  36. - Flapdoodle - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 2:27 pm:

    A

Rotering does fine job. Ad is direct, with excellent cuts to supporting video, uses Bailey against Bailey with devastating effect to make clear who he really is. Textbook.

Quibbles about Rotering are silly, the kind of inside nuance voters don’t bother about.

  37. - Montrose - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 3:07 pm:

“Yesterday Rich specifically commented on the polling in the Illinois Supreme Court races and today Isabel posted an entire thread on the Supreme Court race issues. You might want to start there.”

To the point others have made - you are pointing to nerd content (and I say that with the great affection and counting myself among said nerds) on Capitol Fax that the average voter is neither reading about nor caring about. Those average voters are the target audience for this ad.

  38. - AlfondoGonz - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 3:58 pm:

“Well it might be a perfect ad for Democrats but…”

Nothing after “but” matters. If it is the perfect ads for democrats, in IL, then it is the perfect add.

Worth noting you don’t address that this ad has a tone that is less “supporting JB” than it is reminding the electorate of another instance where Bailey demonstrated he is unfit to lead.

You’re probably right, though, that that doesn’t matter to Republicans.

  39. - XonXoff - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 4:16 pm:

Personally, I struggle to imagine anyone still on the fence on this election but I suppose they’re out there. I think this is a good ad.

My continued wishes of healing and strength to the people of Highland Park.

  40. - Todd - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 4:56 pm:

the ad is a solid hit from a self imposed wound when he shot himself in the foot.

however while it may impede Baily’s path, The Mayor is in for a rude awakening with the courts in the near future. so on her pet issue it may be irrelevant in the end

  41. - Fivegreenleaves - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 5:04 pm:

Good ad for the metroeast and Chicago suburbs, maybe even Champaign. Southern and rural Illinois, not so much. Btw, an AR-15 is not an assault rifle. It’s a semi-automatic. 1 trigger pull, 1 bullet.

  42. - Jocko - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 5:13 pm:

    ==It’s a semi-automatic. 1 trigger pull, 1 bullet.==

And yet the las vegas shooter was able to fire 1,100 bullets in the span of ten minutes.

  43. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 5:22 pm:

===for the metroeast and Chicago suburbs, maybe even Champaign. Southern and rural Illinois, not so much.===

You just capsulized what’s inherently wrong with GOP thinking, taking away this ad from this lil snippet.

Places you see this good? That’s where all the votes are.

Places you see this not so good? Much fewer votes, real monitories to the overall.

That makes this a better ad than you may think.

    ===self imposed===

Social media has ruined more people then it ever helped in politics.

    Facebook Live is bad.

  44. - The Velvet Frog - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 5:30 pm:

She said “assault weapon”, not “assault rifle”. The two are different terms with different legal definitions, and semi automatics are included under assault weapons. I guess if you want to try and correct people, check your facts first.

  45. - Proud Papa Bear - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 5:47 pm:

    A-
Solid message but they could’ve rehearsed it more for a better punch.
Glad to see they’re starting to open the playbook a bit. Still waiting for the slew of ads highlighting our vastly improved financial status.

  46. - Surge voter - Tuesday, Oct 18, 22 @ 10:51 pm:

    Great ad, great messenger.
