Proft, DeVore claims about Paul Pelosi case called “pathetic lies” by Pritzker campaign

Tuesday, Nov 1, 2022 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Last night…

* This morning…

* From the statute

Detention only shall be imposed when it is determined that the defendant poses a specific, real and present threat to a person or has a high likelihood of willful flight.

I am pretty sure any prosecutor could effectively argue that the confessed Paul Pelosi attacker posed a specific, real and present threat to a person, since his actual intended target was the Speaker of the US House, who wasn’t home at the time.

* From the Pritzker campaign…

There is no such thing as a non-detainable offense. After spending an entire year recycling tired talking points, the Illinois GOP has woken up to the reality that they don’t have a single new idea or policy position that would make life better for Illinois working families. For the next week, they’ll repeat pathetic lies because they quite literally have nothing else to say. It’s laughable to suggest that people like Darren Bailey and Tom Devore, who often spend their free time stalking elected officials, filming corny videos outside of their homes, and offering bounties for photos of their family, are concerned about the safety of those serving the public.

    Confusing people with facts will always be a hard sell.

  2. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:02 am:

    Isn’t kidnapping a federal offense?

    So how could federal offenses be under state law?

  3. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:06 am:

    It’s scary to note that both Bailey and Proft are attorneys.

    Scary.

  4. - Lurker - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:06 am:

    The odd thing here about how totally inane they are, Charlie Kirk was requesting bond for the attacker and after a few billionaire republicans stepped forward, the judge added additional charges and refused bond. So under DeVores system, he would have met bond but under Raouls he is deemed a threat and must remain in jail (using devores terms here).

  5. - H-W - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:10 am:

    No sympathy for the victims expressed herein.

    Instead, Proft and DeVore use a tragic, horrible crime that occurred in California to claim that the People of Illinois are somewhat responsible.

    Should such crimes occur here, Proft would have us believe our property taxes are going up.

    DeVore would suggest that because our elected representatives (to which he belongs, by the way) have acted to protect the poor (who are disproportionately ethnic minorities) from institutionalized discrimination, these same ethnic minorities who are poor are going to be committing a lot of crimes, without constraints.

    Simple racism, fueled by institutionalized discrimination. Call it “color-blind” racism, if you like.

  6. - Streator Curmudgeon - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:11 am:

    Proft continues the theory of the Big Lie, as espoused by a certain unnamed person in the 1930s.

    It’s all the ILGOP’s got.

  7. - Hot Taeks - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:30 am:

    It’s also worth mentioning that the Paul Pelosi attacker is a full-on holocaust denier. This with Charlie Kirk and other right-wingers implying that the man is a hero who should be bailed out of prison. Will Holocaust Denialism become mainstream for conservatives if it hasn’t already?

  8. - Amalia - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:31 am:

    lies lies and more lies. there are certainly things to fix with the SAFET law but this ain’t one of them. but worse are the straight up lies about the incident itself. denigrating gay people by implication of violent conduct is just awful.

  9. - Furtive Look - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:37 am:

    They lie so much, they don’t even know what the truth is.

  10. - Watchful eye. - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:40 am:

    Illinois had a kidnapping statute. It’s called unlawful restraint. And why does Pritzker continue to punch down with the snarky comments. Just state the facts and move in. Diminishes him to engage.

  11. - Henry Francis - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:49 am:

    Florida man uses California events to criticize Illinois law.

    And he even threw in “illegal alien”.

    Man what an awful thing it must be to live as Dan Proft.

  12. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:55 am:

    Republicans have been acting absolutely pathetic in response to this attack. Par for the course for them though these days.

  13. - Norseman - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:57 am:

    Excellent role models for future MAGA children everywhere. Sad.

  14. - wow now - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 10:57 am:

    This is a total lie. Dan Profit is pathetic and people can see through his bogus newspapers.

    I listened to the California prosecutor’s press conference yesterday. She said “tomorrow is the detention hearing” they have the same process we are going to have. Where she said the judge will determine if the defendant is held.

    Under our current system, bail is set and a even a dangerous person who has access to cash can buy their way out.

  15. - cermak_rd - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:01 am:

    Watchful Eye,
    Punching down implies inequality of power. In this case the GOP is for better or worse a major political party in the state and Bailey and Pritzker are equal opponents. Devore is running for AG, for Pete’s sakes. These are not just randos on the internet.

  16. - Vote Quimby - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:02 am:

    ==It’s scary to note that both Bailey and Proft are attorneys.==
    I’m assuming OW meant DeVore and Proft as I don’t think Bailey’s two-year degree would qualify him… but still a scary thought.

  17. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:03 am:

    ===assuming===

    You are correct, as the title of this post lists both.

    :)

  18. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:05 am:

    It is MY bad.

    Apologies

  19. - Skokie Man - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:07 am:

    “And why does Pritzker continue to punch down with the snarky comments.” @Watchful eye.

    Because by doing so he chooses who is seen as his “real” opponent in the race and reduces Bailey to a perceived puppet. There is a risk involved with elevating Proft to this level, but really Proft was already there within the GOP. He’s effectively running the broader Bailey campaign with Uihlein’s money.

    Proft has also proven himself incapable of being likable to the broader populace (see 2010 election results, etc.), making him a very useful punching bag/foil.

    Proft is a walking caricature of racist, dark money, insider GOP politicians and he is just well-known enough and just connected enough to Bailey’s campaign that the strategy works.

  20. - supplied_demand - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:14 am:

    It’s very telling that Proft goes through three levels of “what if?” (what if Illinois, what if no kidnapping, what if a law not in effect today) and still has to lie to make his point.

  21. - Retired SURS Employee - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:16 am:

    I don’t think Proft is licensed in Illinois.

  22. - Rudy’s teeth - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:17 am:

    Mr. Proft and Mr. DeVore…non compos mentis.

  23. - Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:26 am:

    OW’s oopsie sent me to DB’s wikipedia page to make sure I hadn’t missed something along the way. I hadn’t, but I did see this gem in the entry…

    “In a rare victory for candidates supported by Dan Proft’s Liberty Principles PAC,[12][13] Bailey defeated David Reis in the 2018 Republican primary”

    Slay

  24. - Joe Bidenopolous - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:27 am:

    (the footnote [12] is by a Rich Miller, “The Proft Scorecard”)

  25. - Jocko - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 11:49 am:

    ==Paul Pelosi’s attacker would be set free==

    …and if Hitler was accepted at art school, WW2 wouldn’t have taken place. /S

    Next Tuesday can’t come soon enough.

  26. - Bigtwich - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 12:05 pm:

    I did an ARDC lawyer search on Proft. Apparently there is no proft in Illinois law.

  27. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 12:11 pm:

    Proft has a J.D. from Loyola…

  28. - Ste_with_a_v_en - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 12:12 pm:

    Proft spent part of his show questioning the facts laid out by DOJ. Him, Amy, and their fans all made jokes about Paul Pelosi being assaulted. Gross statements from gross people.

  29. - Dotnonymous - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 12:36 pm:

    “It’s scary to note that both Bailey and Proft are attorneys.

    Scary.”

    Shakespeare’s prescription…

  30. - Retired SUR Employee - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 12:40 pm:

    –Proft has a J.D. from Loyola…–

    Understood.
    However, he can’t practice law in Illinois if he is not licensed. Perhaps he is licensed in another state? If not, then he is not an attorney, even if he graduated from law school.

  31. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 12:42 pm:

    ==Him, Amy, and their fans all made jokes about Paul Pelosi being assaulted==

    This is absolutely disgusting and I would be calling out any Republican who doesn’t denounce this nonsense. I don’t know how anyone can call themselves a Republican anymore. I just don’t get their despicable minsets.

  32. - Former Downstater - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 1:01 pm:

    Paul Pelosi’s attacker was detained under the Federal system. It’s likely completely lost on both of them that the Federal system does not use cash bail.

  33. - duck duck goose - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 1:12 pm:

    Because this isn’t murder, if the suspect were in Illinois, wouldn’t the court have to consider releasing the suspect on bail under the current law? Isn’t it more likely that the suspect would be released under the current law than under the SAFE-T Act?

  34. - Amalia - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 1:26 pm:

    I looked for Proft in the Fla. database of lawyers and could not find him. maybe he’s not licensed to practice law and just graduated from law school. did he pass the bar anywhere? even when a lawyer takes a time out….infamously, Kim Foxx did not have an active law license when she declared for SA, which means she was not keeping up with her required CLE credits….they are still on the books if they originally were licensed. Come on Dan, tell us where you are licensed and if not, did you pass a bar exam? My bet is that he is not a licensed lawyer cause then he would have to follow ethics rules.

  35. - Nick Name - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 1:47 pm:

    There is no bottom with Republicans. None at all.

  36. - Nick Name - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 1:48 pm:

    These are the same people who tell gun control advocates not to politicize mass shootings.

  37. - Anon324 - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 2:53 pm:

    For what it’s worth, when he ran in 2010, Proft didn’t hold himself out as an attorney.

  38. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 2:54 pm:

    === Proft didn’t hold himself out as an attorney.==

    First I heard of it.

  39. - Nick - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 4:04 pm:

    I’m genuinely a bit shocked at the speed at which the entire right wing has lost its mind about this.

    Just say it was terrible and move on, seemed like the obviously better move.

  40. - Pundent - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 4:15 pm:

    This is the red meat that the violent angry mob craves and Devore and Proft are more than happy to keep serving it up. All the while deriding cashless bail. A real head scratcher.

  41. - Anon324 - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 6:10 pm:

    ==First I heard of it.==

    There are a handful of Google results for podcast summary/history sites that reference him as such. After a bit of digging, it appears to have originated in a Wikipedia revision from September 2018 that was corrected in August 2022. The revision wasn’t cited, though, so no idea where the person got it from.

  42. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Nov 1, 22 @ 6:34 pm:

    ===reference him as such===

    Yep. That’s where it was at.

    Who knows exactly?
