* It’s Friday! What’s going on in your part of Illinois?…

  1. - Former ILSIP - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 7:56 am:

Hopefully the folks who had to stay late last night get plenty of coffee this morning.

  2. - Give Me A Break - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 8:18 am:

Hip and knees are killing me. The marble floors, climbing those Statehouse stairs and multiple trips back and forth from Statehouse to Stratton are reminders remote sessions spoiled us all.

  3. - H-W - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 8:38 am:

When I wished for no more bitter freezes, I did mean I was happy to accept cool, wet, rainy and dreary as an alternative. Ah Spring. Pollen, mold, rain and cold. Gotta love Illinois.

  4. - H-W - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 8:38 am:

That should be, I did NOT mean I was happy.

  5. - Luke Steele - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 9:02 am:

Awake Illinois supporters are bringing in photos of LGBTQ-themed books they find objectionable to school board meetings to demand they be removed… without realizing that those books are not in every school library. I can’t put my finger on it: is it just stupidity or is it malice?

  6. - Rich Miller - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 9:04 am:

=== is it just stupidity or is it malice?===

    Malice which depends on stupidity.

  7. - H-W - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 9:19 am:

Definitely maliciousness. It is orchestrated. Stupid is just stupid. Ignorance is the art of ignoring.

Malice is an intentional act of hate and an intentional attempt to oppress some children. When AWAKE-IL chose to go after the least powerful among us (minorities and children), they did so on purpose.

  8. - Friendly Bob Adams - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 9:20 am:

Rooting for a bit more sun today here in beautiful DuPage County. Happy to know that April is just down the road a ways.

  9. - JS Mill - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 9:36 am:

A healthy helping of malice and stupidity in equal proportion I think.

Does anyone know if a specific costume is required for Awake membership? Seems like a lot of the members wear costumes, kinda like bruce rauner.

  10. - homebody - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 9:46 am:

Definitely malice. It is just evidence that they are intentionally targeting a disfavored minority group, even though there is no sign that the thing they are complaining about is a real issue.

If they wanted to protect kids they would focus on people in positions of power who take advantage of kids, and encourage educating kids about what to do if someone tries to take advantage of them.

What they are actually doing is the opposite.

  11. - Henry Francis - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 10:07 am:

If the awake folks are truly concerned about children being victimized by perverted things at school then they should shift their focus from public schools to Catholic schools. The priests there have severely damaged far more children than any book could.

  12. - Amalia - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 10:08 am:

AWAKE = Shannon Adcock, mean girl, sadly a product of Mother McAuley.

  13. - Jolly Man - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 10:19 am:

    Henry Francis.

Over the past year I have barely seen anything about Catholic schools and issues with abuse.

Plenty of example at the public schools.

    Please link…

  14. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 10:22 am:

===Catholic schools and issues with abuse.===

You think “Catholic … and issues with abuse” isn’t a thing?

“The schools are fine, but the rectors…”

As a Catholic myself I find any and all abuse abhorrent, and realize it is found and should be addressed… everywhere

  15. - Jolly Man - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 10:27 am:

    OW

Didn’t say it wasn’t abhorrent or non existent.

Simply saying abuse is widespread. Going after one group is unproductive. Parishes now have better protocols than Bret did before.

It seems every month if not week. I hear about a public school where there are issues with teachers having this issue.

Just call it out everywhere and you’re good on this one.

  16. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 10:33 am:

    ===Simply saying abuse is widespread===

    You actually wrote…

===Over the past year I have barely seen anything about Catholic schools and issues with abuse.===

    Define “barely”

    The point?

    Planks and eyes, and “barely”

    Be well

  17. - Grandson of Man - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 10:38 am:

“Awake Illinois supporters are bringing in photos of LGBTQ-themed books they find objectionable”

Why are they obsessed with children and LGBTQ+, are they hiding something? Why are their minds so perverted? Concerned school board members need to ask.

  18. - Henry Francis - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 10:38 am:

Jolly - is awake going after child molesters, or are they going after books? Which is the bigger threat to children?

  19. - Jolly Man - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 10:51 am:

    Henry Francis

    Where did I invoke Awake?

Some folks are evil, doesn’t matter who or where, just plain evil… call it out on all sides because if they don’t get it it as a pastor they very well may as a teacher, or a nurse, or some other profession.

Just be consistent in calling out evil.

  20. - Nearly Normal - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 11:26 am:

This is just the beginning of efforts by the book banning right. A lot of lies and innuendos were spread by the hard right radio station in BloNo.

  21. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 11:28 am:

===Just be consistent in calling out evil.===

How’s that definition of “barely” coming?

  22. - Henry Francis - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 11:28 am:

Jolly, the point of my comment was to point out the hypocrisy and foolishness of awake going after books, instead of things that actually do severely harm kids.

  23. - Nearly Normal - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 11:47 am:

The following article about the Heyworth teacher who resigned is more detailed. Lies and innuendos still win over reason.

  24. - Matty - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 12:53 pm:

It’s honestly very disappointing how Williams’ HB2910 was treated last night on the floor. There is nothing more irritating in life to me than witnessing negligent drivers compromise safety by driving with dogs and animals on their laps. It’s unconscionable to me how someone who supposedly loves their pet can treat their lives so carelessly.

This should be in statute already, and yet here we have an overwhelming majority of legislators mocking good policy.

  25. - H-W - Friday, Mar 24, 23 @ 2:23 pm:

Grandson wrote: Why are they obsessed with children and LGBTQ+, are they hiding something?

I will not attempt to justify their actions, but I will attempt to explain it.

There is a theory that suggests when people fell they are near the bottom of a social hierarchy, they often seek to find a group to stand on, to put beneath them, to oppress, so that they can take some comfort in saying, at least we are not them.

Using similar logic, I think the AWAKE folks have been made to believe that they are being oppressed. They are not, but they have been telling themselves for years not, at least since the Tea Party Movement, that Christians and white people and conservatives, etc., are being oppressed.

The theory would suggest that beyond making noise saying “we are tired of being oppressed” (again, they are not), they are also compelled to find a group that they can suggest are worse than they are, a group that should be oppressed.

And as with most fights, picking on someone weaker or less powerful is an effective short-term strategy. You may not win the battle, but you can win the fight (if enough lay people remain silent).

AWAKE-IL is choosing people to hate, so they can deny others, so they can feel good about their own beliefs and values - their own subculture.

    Happy weekend all
