* What’s going on in your part of the state?…

As I reflect on the sorry state of the Chicago NFL franchise I thought of another example of how the Bears just can’t seem to do anything as well as any other team. As the Kansas City Chiefs suddenly have a larger audience thanks to an off field relationship, I recalled the one time the Bears had something similar happen that makes for an apt metaphor.

The whole Brian Urlacher and Paris Hilton thing. Short lived and awkward. Like so many Chicago coaches. Like so many recent Chicago seasons.

Planning a quick trip out of Chicago this weekend to stop by Beaglefest in Dwight. Not sure what other sights or activities might be in the area. Suggestions welcome.

    1. Trying to cheer up after last night by reminding myself the Cubs still made the playoffs the year of the “Oh no” Brant Brown game.

    2. Wondering how long it will take Villegas and Reilly, or some other opportunistic Dem pols, to restart efforts to get certain signage removed from 401 N. Wabash now that 401 N. Wabash Venture LLC has been found to have committed fraud in NY court and is apparently headed toward court-ordered dissolution.

    Sadness exists around these parts.

The Cubs loss yesterday, good teams close out games like that, and let’s be very clear, Suzuki is a huge reason why the Cubs had their successes this year, they play 162 games, at any time any of the games coulda been lost, it’s 1/162nd, so all this angst against Suzuki was unfounded.

The old rule of thumb, you will win 50 games, you will lose 50 games, it’s the 62 other games you need to win to be successful, last night was one of the 62. Bad baseball.

I’d rather watch bad politics at this rate.

The blown routine catch last night that cost the Cubs the game was a bummer indeed.

  6. - Gravitas - Wednesday, Sep 27, 23 @ 8:49 am:

Memories of Brant Brown muffing a fly ball in Milwaukee and Ron Santo wailing “Oh, no!” were revived last night.

    This loss really hurts.

What was even worse was that Suzuki called off Tauchman, who was also in position to make the catch and the White Sox wasted an early lead in their game with Arizona.

Just another reminder of Fall happening here at the farm. “The Birds” Central Illinois sequel.

    Leslie K,

I don’t know anything about Dwight or its surroundings, but Beaglefest sounds cute. And a good cause.

    To my Cub Fan friends:

Congratulations on a successful year. As of yesterday, I would have predicted you would not finish in the playoffs, because you have the toughest six (now five) game series remaining of the three contenders.

That said, you made my Cards look like the Cubs of old, as you now look like the Cards of old. Congratulations, and here’s to a championship run in 2024.

I guess it’s important to look silly for a few days before reaching the obvious, inevitable conclusion https://twitter.com/SenatorDurbin/status/1707032511405015368

    Leslie K,
If you’re into nostalgia, the stretch of Route 66 from Joliet to Pontiac has a lot to offer with old gas stations and other roadside attractions and Pontiac itself has a number of museums

  12. - John Lopez - Wednesday, Sep 27, 23 @ 9:24 am:

Great catch Vern with Senator Durbin calling for NJ Senator Bob Menendez to resign.

  13. - JoanP - Wednesday, Sep 27, 23 @ 9:29 am:

    @ Leslie K -

Didn’t they just have the Basset Waddle? They must really like their dogs in Dwight.

There’s a bank designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in Dwight: https://flwright.org/explore/smith-bank-building It’s open during regular business hours.

This is taken from a comment on a Chicago blog.

Seems to check out. Any reason the newspapers etc haven’t checked it out? Seems the Mayor appointing someone he had a prior business relationship with to the School Board would be at least worthy of questions.

    https://assumednames.cookcountyclerkil.gov/public/search Run Brandon Johnson.

  16. - Hannibal Lecter - Wednesday, Sep 27, 23 @ 2:19 pm:

I am surprised that the Cubs fans on this blog are taking the loss as hard as they are. Nobody expected them to make the playoffs when the season started and if they did make the playoffs, they wouldn’t be able to compete with LA or Atlanta. This is the first Chicago team that has overachieved in a long time.

  17. - Leslie K - Wednesday, Sep 27, 23 @ 5:33 pm:

Thank you for the suggestions on Dwight/Pontiac. We have definitely added some items to the itinerary.
