Coincidentally, Joliet had a city council meeting already scheduled for last night.
It was one of the ugliest displays I’ve seen in a board meeting anywhere.
One of the ’staunch Catholics’ on the board let the ugly fly free, and was on a vindictive rant about the township getting the grant for asylum seekers. The township should be eliminated completely, the township supervisor should be removed from his job(despite being an elected position).
The discussion starts around the 8:10 mark first with the mayor and one of the first sentences setting the tone for what is to follow.
I’m ready for seasonable temperatures too. Summer had its time, it needs to just step aside and let fall take over so we can enjoy our pumpkin spice products in relative coolness.
A family member just saw his job eliminated. A wrinkle is that he also was a victim of the widespread fraud plaguing IDES in 2020. There are additional security measures and he’s experienced what are probably both electronic glitches and intentionally placed “gates.” The good news is he’s found IDES employees to be superbly professional in helping him navigate.
An interesting article in the WaPo on Joseph Cannon the last Speaker who had to deal with a motion to vacate back in 1910. Cannon was a rep from Illinois. https://wapo.st/3ZC180l
