Question of the day

Thursday, Oct 19, 2023 - Posted by Rich Miller

* WTVO

Even Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker got in on the fun Thursday after a social media image circulated online, purporting to show Rockford but actually showing a town perched on the seaside of a mountain.

The image, posted by the X account Midwest vs. Everybody, showing the town of Amalfi in Italy — a village built upon the slope of a mountain along the ocean’s edge — but bearing the caption “Rockford, IL.”

Social media users were quick to ridicule the posting, including Pritzker, who replied saying, “The Rock River is gorgeous this time of year. Illinois really is in the #MiddleofEverything,” using the state’s tourism slogan.

Rockford, for those not in the know, is not perched on the side of a mountain.

* The governor’s tweet…

* Some of the confused replies to Pritzker were unintentionally hilarious…

Some were just hateful. Not posting.

* The region’s tourism agency even jumped in…

* As did a major beer company…

* The Question: What’s your favorite Illinois municipality? Make sure to explain. Snark is heavily encouraged.

    Rockford is more like Santorini IMHO.

    Springfield, land of wild gazelles and cozy hobbit holes.

  3. - vern - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 12:01 pm:

    Dolton without a doubt. Their village board meetings are better than the average network primetime drama.

  4. - TheInvisibleMan - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 12:03 pm:

    Haddonfield, Illinois

    It is October, after all.

    We stopped watching the show “24″, when they had a scene about tracking a stolen missile truck crossing Illinois and the satellite surveillance guy says” we lost them in the mountains”.

    Mount Pulaski I am guessing.

  7. - Slugger O’Toole - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 12:14 pm:

    Milwaukee. Once described as Chicago’s younger, cooler cousin.

  8. - thunderspirit - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 12:25 pm:

    Decatur, because nothing is cozier than the birthplace of the flyswatter.

    Runner-up: Springfield, which has neither a spring nor much in the way of a field.

  9. - In_The_Middle - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 12:30 pm:

    Peoria. It used to be the Whiskey Capitol of the country, until prohibition. And the land is just soaked with the remnants now.

    Nothing compares to watching the sun set in the shadow of Mt. Prospect, a most majestic peak.

    Athens, Milan, San Jose; Come for the quaint Mid-Western charm. Stay for the mispronunciation of the town name.

    I remain convinced, I’m one of few who have ever lived in Rockford and miss the place. Found it to be a great town.

  13. - ;) - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 12:50 pm:

    Keithsburg, IL. They have like 5 working street lights and a bar with a hole in the wall where you can inside the bar from the across the street at the red light, and you can get like 50acres for ~200k.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 1:35 pm:

    For me, while my love of Galena, I’ll put that up against anyone, and I live in Kendall County, where nothing Illinois happens until Oswego has her say… my love and favorite city is Des Plaines.

    Des Plaines, with a river also celebrating the beauty of her, sitting in the heart of northern Cook County, a jewel with vast forests named in her honor, all roads, like Illinois’ own Rome, leading to Des Plaines, people flying from all over the globe finding their own Uber or Lyft chariots in Des Plaines to whisk our world visitors to the four corners of Illinois. World class gambling, with one of the best buffets and B-list concert venues, Des Plaines has all your high, medium, or other brow entertainment. Let’s not forget the 70s, 80s, and even 90s office buildings rising from the crossroads of Des Plains, it’s “dez” plain to see the many reasons “this plains” of Illinois is lucky to have the beauty, majesty, art, and nature that is… Des Plaines.

  24. - JS Mill - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 1:45 pm:

    The remnants of the Communist wall in Berlin, Illinois make it a must-visit. But that can’t hold a candle to the Louvre in Paris. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIDX18Xl16s

  27. - CornAl DoGooder - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 2:02 pm:

    The upstanding and ethical reputation of the municipal government in McCook, Illinois makes it my favorite place in the state

  28. - Lurker - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 2:21 pm:

    Peoria because it has the Louvre and I never get tired of seeing the Mona Lisa

  29. - Anyone Remember - Thursday, Oct 19, 23 @ 2:27 pm:
