* Not a bad analogy…

I bought my glasses Saturday evening.

  1. - Former ILSIP - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 11:57 am:

A counterpoint: If you view voting as deserving no more commitment and rigor than watching the sun, maybe you shouldn’t be voting in the first place.

  2. - Original Rambler - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 12:06 pm:

ILSIP what other hoops should potential voters go through before being allowed to vote? Maybe have to pass a candidate quiz for every single race on the ballot? Who decides how much commitment and rigor is minimally acceptable? Provide proof to election judges that you have been paying attention for at least 30 days?

    This is a great analogy.

==If you view voting as deserving no more commitment and rigor than watching the sun, maybe you shouldn’t be voting in the first place.==

Oh please. Voting should be as easy as possible. I don’t have a lot of respect for people who want to put barriers in place to voting.

  4. - Hannibal Lecter - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 12:10 pm:

Except that people can vote by mail for any reason (or no reason at all) or go and vote any day during the 2 to 2 1/2 weeks leading up to the election. Can’t do the same with the eclipse. There really is no excuse for someone not voting - that is if they truly wanted to.

I bought my glasses this morning.

  6. - Rich Miller - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 12:14 pm:

===Except that people can vote by mail===

And this has what to do with the topic?

  7. - JS Mill - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 12:15 pm:

=Oh please. Voting should be as easy as possible. I don’t have a lot of respect for people who want to put barriers in place to voting.=

    Ditto.

And it was a great analogy.

  8. - Hannibal Lecter - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 12:16 pm:

=== And this has what to do with the topic? ===

That there are far more opportunities to vote than watch the eclipse so the analogy isn’t exactly on point.

  9. - Rich Miller - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 12:19 pm:

    ===so the analogy isn’t exactly on point===

    lol

No analogy is ever exact. Try looking up the definition.

“a comparison of two otherwise unlike things based on resemblance of a particular aspect”

    https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/analogy

  10. - Wilson - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 12:31 pm:

Some people are going to extraordinary lengths to watch the eclipse. Day off work, hours of travel, sitting in traffic jams in the middle of nowhere just for the opportunity. Some people can’t be bothered to sign an extra form when they get their drivers license renewed.

  11. - Rich Miller - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 12:35 pm:

===Some people are going to extraordinary lengths===

And your point is what? Some people are looking for eclipse glasses today is the point of the person at the top of this post.

  12. - bored now - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 1:02 pm:

the 30 day (not always 30 days in every state) was a product of the pre-computer days, when everything was physical paperwork. HOWEVER, having said that, it is important to remember that pre-election periods are hectic and sometimes even overwhelming for elections administrators. whose offices are ALWAYS underfunded (i’ve yet to see a county commissioner run on full funding for elections). just something to think about…

  13. - Demoralized - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 1:09 pm:

This post is going off the rails a little bit. Buying eclipse glasses the same day doesn’t make you any less interested in the eclipse as registering to vote on the same day makes you any less interested in voting.

  14. - TinyDancer(FKASue) - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 1:27 pm:

I got free eclipse viewers at Chicago Public Library.
    They’re from Adler.

  15. - stop Big Glasses propaganda - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 1:50 pm:

staring right at it…. it’s literally fine

  16. - TinyDancer(FKASue) - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 1:56 pm:

    Got ‘em on Thursday.

  17. - The Magnificent Purple Walnut - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 2:02 pm:

Those glasses should be on sale in a few hours…

  18. - JS Mill - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 2:24 pm:

I am selling eclipse glasses. Cheap. Wed have 600 of them, only used for about 5 minutes.

  19. - biiiG gLases pproPOGANDA - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 2:49 pm:

    eyes hurt

  20. - Banish Misfortune - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 3:07 pm:

I got mine free from my public library. Stamped with relevant times for my area.

It was cool, I took a bike ride and keep stopping. However, in a way it was weird. Everyone outside. Standing around. Not talking, it reminded me of early pandemic.

  21. - Norseman - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 3:17 pm:

JS, it’s all about marketing. Put an announcement that you’re selling anti-dark Brandon glasses for a discount of $25 a piece.

  22. - Norseman - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 3:18 pm:

    Left out on truth social.

  23. - Give Us Barabbas - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 6:12 pm:

“These big, burly men, with tears in their eyes… and they tell me they can’t see the eclipse…. “
    Well yeah, now…

Some people have a hobby of being aggrieved. Thy don’t want a solution, mind you, they just want to be angered. It’s the same thing with mail it ballots; they are mad someone is doing it differently, doesn’t matter if it’s better.

  24. - Dotnonymous x - Monday, Apr 8, 24 @ 8:11 pm:

My Mom used to say, ” Some people would look for trouble in paradise.”
