Hope everyone got through last night’s storm okay. In downstate Illinois with family until the movers arrive with our stuff in Chicago(moving from the South back to Chicago after years away). Power flickered on and off periodically but mostly missed us.
Getting to Chicago between the NASCAR craziness and the DNC craziness. Good timing, I suppose?
read last night that NWeatherService wants damage reports to help assess the storms. have seen Crestwood, West Loop, Lakeview all with trees pulled up by roots. Video of West Loop roof with pool area furniture just flying off. 10 tornadoes all up and down the line of the storm, yeah, that is not normal.
So I’m in Berwyn and I hear a warning, Markham and Crestwood were in its path, I was like oh, to the south of us. Then another Arlington Park OK to the north, that’s lucky. Then the third called out Berwyn and I was like, man, 3 tornadoes what are the odds as I bundle up me and the dog to take shelter. There we listened as more and more warnings were reported pretty well everywhere. What an evening. The dog slept while I worried.
So glad it seems nothing tragic happened with the tornado at O’Hare. That had to be so terrifying for the people stuck in planes on the runway unable to go anywhere. What were they thinking though letting planes go out with people on them in conditions so bad they had to evacuate the air control towers?
I am in west loop and it was scary last night. Many uprooted trees, downed lines. We had to evacuate my 8 story building to the basement. I can’t believe I experienced - “It sounded like a freight train”. My huge windows and sliding glass doors were shaking so violently it literally sounded like a train. That is 2 nights in a row with tornado sirens going off in the west loop! But nah, there is no climate change….
We have an older dog that was a rescue and lived on the streets for at least a year. She does not get spooked by storms but she is great at telling us when they are coming. Last night was the most scared I’ve seen her and that was 2 hours before it was supposed to hit us. And 30 minutes before she was acting quite scared and wanting me to protect her. It was quite a storm with her and I are both glad it is over.
@ allknowingmasterofraccoondom on X you can find video of a pool deck of a West Loop high rise. the pool furniture flying off it. very scary. based on the damage….report to NWService….probably an EF 0 tornado. glad you are ok.
This morning, the digital editions of the Trib and Sun Times had not updated their stories about the storm since last night’s “tornado watch” coverage. Few photos up at this point as well. Interesting and sad sign of the decline of local newspapers.
On the otherhand, channel 7’s live video was brave and helpful at the height of the storm.

Grateful the storms were relatively weak here. Expected worse and had already tested the generator
Also heard from friends up north who were in the heavier storm’s path; they are OK.

At CasaJM, we skated by with two inches of rain and a few dead branches in the yard.
The power’s out just a few blocks away to the north and west, but we maintained.
Was a time when people could believe that Chicago was tornado-proof; now we get 10 tornadoes — at the same time.
I do not like this new Chicago weather. Not one bit.

misterjayem,
It’s just because Tom retired. Without him to reign it in the weather does whatever it wants.

Was chanting “break apart” when the tornado was beginning to form over O’Hara (h/t Daley 1) Airport, live on TV. Thankfully it did not fully form.

Tornadoes touched down briefly around towns nearby, but we escaped with wind and rain. Thank goodness.
