He was at a rally in Daley Plaza in 1980 during his ill-fated campaign against Reagan. Jane Byrne introduced him with remarks dripping in sarcasm. She knew Carter was going to lose but couldn’t even put on a show of supporting her party’s nominee. Carter’s speech was not memorable. He looked like he couldn’t wait to get out of there. The guy was a nuclear physics expert, having attended Georgia Tech and the Naval Academy. He served as the senior officer on the Navy’s second nuclear submarine, hand-picked by Admiral Rickover.
