Friday, Apr 11, 2025 - Posted by Rich Miller * Wilco’s 1995 debut album “A.M.” was dominated by a collection of cool, beyond competent alt country songs that could’ve been on any Uncle Tupelo record. But, to me, the final track signaled to the world where Jeff Tweedy’s newly formed breakaway band was headed next. And that direction was greatness. Despite the album title implying a low-fi experience, two decent speakers and a subwoofer (or good headphones) are musts to fully appreciate the almost psychedelic mix. What you’ll hear is nearly a perfect song, and for some reason I have been playing the absolute heck out of it for weeks… You couldn’t believe I was feeling fine What’s happening by you?

I realize this is a contrarian take, but to me the best thing Wilco ever did is “Box Full of Letters” from this LP - clever, tuneful, but pretty straight forward Americana rock. I respect their artier stuff more than I enjoy listening to it (with the exception of a couple of songs like “Hotel Arizona”).

I will forever miss Uncle Tupelo, but I wore out the CD when this came out. Haven’t seen Wilco in years, but I did get to catch Son Volt a few years back. Thanks, Rich. I guess I know what the Friday playlist looks like.

Wilco occupies a strange void in my music interest/listening. They hit their peak at a time just as I entered administration and started having children. There is about a five year gap for me where I just didn’t listen to much new music until I got my first Ipod and could download music. I always liked what I heard of them, just never got into them. I would hear them on XRT when I would go back home. It was not until about three years ago that I really started listening to them and really like their music.

Caterpillar celebrates its 100th anniversary this coming week. Probably would be a more festive occasion without the current economic backdrop.

This is by far my favorite Wilco album, it’s one of those rare albums that I can listen to from beginning to end without skipping any track.

That album really broke my brain open in terms of listening to stuff that wasn’t on MTV or mainstream radio. Was introduced to it by a coworker as a teen after it came out. Then they released Being There and I saw them live for the first time in 97 and my musical life changed for the better.
