Sen. Peters reports good haul in first 72 hours (Updated with Biss $ numbers and comparison to ‘influencer’)

Friday, May 16, 2025 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Not bad. No word yet on how many text messages Peters had to send to get these results /s…

State Sen. Robert Peters, who launched his candidacy for Congress in Illinois’ 2nd District on Tuesday, raised more than $175,000 from more than 3,000 individual donors in his first 72 hours of campaigning, his campaign announced Friday.

“I’m inspired by the outpouring of energy and support from so many small, individual donors,” said Peters. “We’re building a grassroots campaign that is fueled by the power of the communities of the 2nd District. They’re making it clear–they want a leader who will stand up and fight back boldly against Trump’s destruction and chaos.”

Peters’ fundraising was bolstered by the early endorsements of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Leaders We Deserve.

Peters, a South Side native, was a community organizer before becoming a state senator, where he has led efforts for criminal justice reform and workers’ rights. He is running to replace incumbent Rep. Robin Kelly, who has launched a campaign for U.S. Senate.

…Adding… Daniel Biss did well…

Today, Daniel Biss announced his campaign for Illinois’ 9th Congressional District has raised more than $350,000 24 hours after announcing his run yesterday morning.

“I am deeply humbled and honored by the outpouring of support this campaign has seen in its first 24 hours,” said Daniel Biss. “We’re building a movement to not only take on Donald Trump and MAGA extremists, but to deliver real change to lower costs, defend the environment, and protect our fundamental rights. This amazing early support makes it clear that people are ready to fight for a future that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected.”

Biss, a former state legislator and now the mayor of Evanston, is running for Congress to stand up to Donald Trump, lower costs for working families, and fight tooth and nail to protect our civil rights. The 9th Congressional District is currently represented by Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, who recently announced she would not run for reelection.

* And by “well,” I mean that a certain “influencer” received national coverage for raising $150,000 less than Biss in her first 24 hours for the same race…

He is an excellent campaigner, a pretty good fit for the District, will fight hard for it’s residents and he has lived in Chicago for more than 6 months.

That said, it seems likely he will catch an AIPAC funded primary opponent if he doesn’t get ahead of his prior foreign policy comments.

I received about 5 text messages yesterday about Robert Peters, this is extremely unusual as I had not heard of him till 2 days ago and I lean to the right.

    ==3,000 individual donors==

I suppose we’re gonna have to wait a few months to find out most were from outside the district.

  4. - FTR - Friday, May 16, 25 @ 11:06 am:

In horse racing parlance, Peters has sprinted out of the gate and is loose on the lead. It’s way, way early and I suppose we’ll hear from another candidate of substance at some point. But the longer they wait, the harder he’ll be to catch.

Hey Peter’s campaign, how many of those 3000 donations are actually from the 2nd district?

How much longer before Kat starts bringing up Biss’s troubled history on Pensions while in the GA? And his role in Quinn’s unconstitutional pension “reforms”? As well as the current problems with Tier 2?

    Did Pritzker even use that?

This post’s weird non sequitur attacking Abughazaleh is a pretty good example of why Democrats are struggling to make the tent bigger.

Is anyone surprised Biss can raise money? He has always been at good that, he just ran up against a billionaire in his last major race.

As to his Biss & pensions, there was this ad: https://capitolfax.com/2018/02/16/pritzker-goes-after-biss-middle-class-governor-claim-also-airs-ad-featuring-stratton/

But I know the Yosts, so the ad stuck with me.

I certainly don’t recall him doing that. And if it wasn’t useful in a statewide primary, I’m not sure how much it would be in that district. Not a lot of state pensioners on the North Shore.

Nah the teachers and AFSCME had made sure their members knew the deal with Danny Boy well ahead of the ‘18 primary. Probably a lot less members per capita in the 9th than the whole state, though.

I don’t know if it came from JB for Governor, but word got around. But I’m suspicious Kat Abu will go there. It’s pretty old and parochial.

==This post’s weird non sequitur attacking Abughazaleh is a pretty good example of why Democrats are struggling to make the tent bigger.==

    1) It’s not a non-sequitur, Abu is one of Biss’ opponents in his race.

    2) Rich Miller is not a Democrat.

==Kat starts bringing up Biss’s troubled history on Pensions==

Her target is old timers. Why would she view a plan that would’ve meant more funding for services that Millennials and Gen Z consume be viewed as a bad thing?

==This post’s weird non sequitur attacking Abughazaleh is a pretty good example of why Democrats are struggling to make the tent bigger.==

Perhaps she shouldn’t view IL-09 as Midwestern flyover country that she can just parachute into and run for a House seat.

  16. - ArchPundit - Friday, May 16, 25 @ 1:41 pm:

Seems like a point about the press coverage more than an attack on Kat.

  17. - Thomas Paine - Friday, May 16, 25 @ 1:49 pm:

    1. Biss’ biggest worry is not Kat, it is Fine.

    2. It slipped past me yesterday, but I noticed Jeff Schoenberg’s support for Fine, and State Rep Croke. Those are noticeable.

    3. The attack on Biss won’t use the word “pension,” it will say “retirement,” and there will be some sweet old school teacher talking about how as a legislator, Biss voted to take away the retirement benefits she earned, and then the sweet old teacher will say she is supporting someone else because she trusts that person to protect social security and medicare from Trump, but not Daniel Biss.

    4. Whether Jan decides to endorse someone else over Biss because of the pension issue is a big question. She has very strong ties to organized labor. I have a hard time imagining Schakowsky remaining neutral to the very end, but I expect her to remain neutral for as long as possible.

    5. There is a reason Kat is not updating us on fundraising numbers.

Come back and chat with me when you aren’t defending a carpetbagging carnival barker. She doesn’t even GO here.

  19. - Cole - Friday, May 16, 25 @ 2:05 pm:

The IL-9 primary is going to be so annoying on social media and I don’t feel like I can tune it out since I am a resident.

Anyway, Biss is by far my favorite candidate that has entered but I’ve seen speculation of Huynh or Simmons running and either one of those two would easily take my vote away from Biss.

  20. - low level - Friday, May 16, 25 @ 3:37 pm:

    Kat who?
