One of my Facebook friends in the Springfield area who is an online-only SJR subscriber just posted that his annual online subscription will be jumping from $60/year to $100/year. For a substandard product compared to even 10 years ago (when the SJ-R was starting to decline further but still was reasonably worthwhile for even just online-only subscriptions and Sunday only print, which by then I was just getting those only).
It’s a fine morning here in beautiful DuPage County. Had an early walk before breakfast. Still searching for reasons to be optimistic about the United States.
@Leatherneck 8:08===Some public libraries and some community college libraries have subscriptions to online editions that library card holders can access from home for free.
To Friendly Bob Adams: The reasons to be optimistic about our Nation is that we have survived wars and unrest, change and hard times for 249 years. America is still seen as “the last best hope of Earth” (Abe Lincoln) by those risking fortunes and their very lives to come here. The silent majority are far more rational and reasonable than the clamorers; for every act of hate or disrespect there are others of love, tolerance, honor, and respect not making the headlines. America has its problems, but we are neither down nor out, and our flag still flies while other nations and ideologies have fallen by the wayside.
DuPage–I’m able to access Newsbank via my State Library card so I can at least get access to most of the articles. At least the local ones that I care about the most. Still, the SJR pales in comparison to the old days.

I was happy to see the news that Springfield was renewed for three more years of funding for the downtown AMP concert series on the Y-block. The city should be socking away money to continue those.
Like Rich, I remember all three. When Jim Edgar was governor there was more civility and bipartisanship in the legislature. On the floor of the House there was no one more knowledgeable that Mark O’Brien. And Porter was one of the nicest and most helpful people on staff. All will be missed.
RIP to all three. For Republicans, it’s a reminder of how the party has tilted to the right from 1990s and before. The protests by Dems against immigration enforcement and the lurid celebration of a political assassination show how far that party has gone to the left. Both trends are sad.

Beautiful day, but saddened by the passing of Porter, Mark and Gov. Edgar. All contributed to making this a better and should have lived longer lives.
