About our recent site issues
Friday, Sep 19, 2025 - Posted by Rich Miller * The site has crashed a couple of times this week, including earlier today. We had huge traffic surges, but we’re not yet sure where it’s coming from or why. I’ve had my website hosts beef up our server power numerous times over the years, starting just after Rod Blagojevich was arrested and we (along with at least one Chicago newspaper) were knocked offline. So, we’re doing it again, starting with some server software upgrades. We’re sorry for any inconvenience. It’s truly maddening and unacceptable on our end. * Anyway, here’s Pete Droge… You close your eyes and smile and say, Kid, this is a good one

I was wondering what was going on this morning. Glad you addressed it.

thanks for the unacceptable comment but I don’t accept that. you are fine. if you are having issues from outsiders that is something that is hard to predict and not nice of them.

Wow! My family met the band at a hotel in Omaha, in July 2011. I think they were pretty new then, and were really nice. Signatures, swag, etc. for three young boys on their way back from Yellowstone. It is great to see the band survived over the years. This is a really good song.

AI is probably scraping your website.

It’s all good. I did notice the error earlier, then the brief mismatch in number of comments vs number of comments visible.
Stated for no particular reason;
I’ve always found the AWS CDN/Cloudfront to be more time-consuming to tweak and keep updated over time compared to similar services at Akamai. Especially when it comes to pulling out useful visualizations of traffic patterns during surges.
Although it is a little bit less bad if it’s only managing traffic to servers in one region, say for example us-west-2.

Excitable Boy may be right. I’ve had AI bots scraping my site for most of September. The traffic numbers are huge, but it’s a mirage.
On the other hand, it may be black hats trying to crash you with a denial of services attack.
With the shutdown and deterioration of newspapers, CapFax becomes more valuable every day as a source of Illinois government news.
Thanks, Rich.
