Rep. Marty Moylan to drop out of reelection bid

Monday, Nov 3, 2025 - Posted by Isabel Miller * Rep. Marty Moylan (D-Des Plaines) told me he won’t seek a seventh term in the Illinois House and plans to endorse his chief of staff, Justin Cochran, who filed petitions today. Moylan said the decision came as he’s been dealing with some health issues. Moylan said he doesn’t have a timeline yet for withdrawing from the race but plans to “move on.” “I’m going to do local stuff, but that’s about it — done with Springfield, retired,” Rep. Moylan said. He said he’ll “decide on a retirement date soon.” Rep. Moylan, first elected in 2013, chairs the House Transportation: Rail Systems, Roads & Bridges Committee and has been heavily involved in transit reform talks. He pushed for the creation of the NITA Law Enforcement Task Force, which will be lead by the Cook County Sheriff. * Cochran said he was honored for Moylan’s confidence and encouragement to run. “Marty is a very serious legislator, and he cares a lot about his district, and he cares a lot about the residents,” Cochran said. “I remember when he hired me, he told me my biggest service [is] to make sure my residents get what they need and the help they need. So that has been my focus, and it’s been a very rewarding experience.”

“And that is why he didn’t announce this until the last day to file nominating petitions. Fortune favors the well-prepared, and thankfully for me, I just happened to have my notarized petitions signed and filed hours before the deadline.”
Look, nothing personal. This is a time honored tactic, used by all sorts of pols to hand their elected positions to favored candidates. I’m sure Cochran will be a fine legislator, but the process they’re using stinks.

Hope that Rep. Moylan’s health improves. Always appreciated his dedication to rail transportation.

There is one person in Springfield who thinks Marty Moylan is or has ever been a “serious legislator.” The guy can barely string two sentences together. Pretty funny stuff.

Marty
great guy- hope is health is good.
I’m guessing that the Marty party will be at the sugar bowl next year

I guess it’s the “smart move” by old-school political wiseguys. But isn’t also an admission of political weakness?

Mr/Ms CubbieBlue87: Marty is more serious than he lets on. And someone who worked hard. He will me missed about 10X more than any GOPie

Crowning a successor. Undemocratic and immature.

Nonsense. Anyone in the district was free to circulate petitions to get on the ballot.

Don’t play dumb. Incumbency advantage is nearly impossible to surmount in a primary. If he had said he was going to resign months ago, a primary would have happened. This is a form of cronyism, plain and simple.
It is wrong.
- The tactic - Monday, Nov 3, 25 @ 4:07 pm:
I don’t like the tactic, but if you are politically aware and live in that district and were someone who might have been wanting the seat in the future, I find it hard to believe that you wouldn’t have found out that Cochran was circulating petitions. And it doesn’t take a genius to know that if Moylan’s COS is circulating petitions Moylan is likely going to drop out.

Very sad to see Marty go, but wish him all the best. He’s one of the good ones, and the chamber and caucus will be worse off for it. Best of luck to Cochran, if he’s anything like Marty he’ll be a welcome addition and do very well.

both 47th and the Tactic are correct

But only one person had inside information that Moylan was not running.
Cochrane ran for city clerk in heavily Democratic Des Plaines and lost four years ago. That does not speak well of his skills as a candidate.
