Krishnamoorthi explains his committee vote to hold Bill Clinton in contempt of Congress
Thursday, Jan 22, 2026 - Posted by Rich Miller * As Isabel told you this morning, US Senate candidate Raja Krishnamoorthi voted in committee yesterday to hold former President Bill Clinton in contempt of Congress for evading a subpoena to testify on the Epstein files scandal. He did not vote to hold former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt. Neither Isabel nor I could find any sort of explanation from Rep. Krishnamoorthi online, so I reached out to his campaign with a question…
From Congressman Krishnamoorthi…
Discuss.

It’s the right call morally, and I think politically as well.

It was the correct vote. However, it would be nice if everyone who blew off Congress was held accountable and not just a select few.

- any individual known to be involved with Epstein should come before the House Oversight Committee to testify — even current and former presidents. -
I’m not supporting Raja, but he’s absolutely right. The Democrats need to shed this millstone from their necks.

Right call The lack of hypocrisy is refreshing.
- Anyone Remember - Thursday, Jan 22, 26 @ 3:19 pm:
For reasons going back at least to the Clinton Administration, Congress should only be allowed to compel sworn testimony in public (with national security exceptions, obviously). Unlike testimony offered in a judicial setting, Congressional testimony is offered without the presence of a neutral third party (judge) to rule on objections.

I don’t understand why the Clintons just refused to show up, honestly. Republicans lie all the time and make all kinds of bogus referrals to DOJ and this corrupt DOJ would at least investigate if not charge them with perjury over anything (see what they’re doing to Powell) so I understand not wanting to do it (even though they said they’d be fine doing it publicly for some reason?) but if you don’t even show up then you’re going to get charged with contemp. I don’t get it.
It’s probably the right call for Bill, to hold him in contempt. As Raja said there’s no reason to call Hillary in at all, there’s no evidence she had anything to do with Epstein, but at the same time she was subpoenaed.
The whole thing is a political theater circus and Republicans are being huge hypocrites, but at the same time you can’t just blow off Congress.
- Irked Acorn - Thursday, Jan 22, 26 @ 3:31 pm:
The Clintons have said they want to testify in open session. The republicans are issuing this contempt because they only want it closed session.
For me the easy answer is that there has been enough secrets around Epstein and I don’t want a congressmen who supports Republican efforts to keep more of it secret.

Raja is right. The public has a right to know about anyone who was involved with Epstein.

It’s the right call…fiat justitia ruat caelum.

I am not running for US Senate and I am not trying to present myself as a fighter who is going to fight against Donald Trump.
Congress as an institution should expect people suponened to show up, regardless of who they are. Regardless of how they feel. Both of the Clintons should respect the subpoena enough to show up. By refusing to show up they’ve lowered themselves to the level of Steve Bannon and deserve the same justice as Steve Bannon.
However, I am not running for US Senate and my position on this makes the guy who is running for US Senate’s position make even less sense.
I think it is also awfully childish for the Clintons to refuse the subpoena, but I’ve also never been asked to testify about my or my spouse’s relationship with an incredibly wealthy child sex trafficker.
I personally think the congressman’s appear to principle falls short because he’s demonstrated that he picks and chooses when he thinks someone needs to follow a subpoena.

Wrong call. Not because Bill Clinton shouldn’t testify. He should. But this is a political game. They’re excusing countless others who have also refused to testify. Why Bill and Hillary if not for political reasons. So why enable the GOP bad behavior?
