Feeling very conspiracy theory-ish about the closing of the El Paso airspace. Closed for 10:days and then nevermind, just kidding. I know we should never underestimate the incompetence of the Trump administration but we should not underestimate their malevolence either.
I mean O’Hare is a big big part of the Chicago and Illinois economy.
A restaurant in Sycamore burned down at the end of January and — thanks to Shaw Media — we know Sycamore Fire Department wasn’t at the scene.
Fortunately, mutual and automatic aid agreements are such that 12 other agencies showed up to fight the fire, but there’s no telling how much time might have been lost when Sycamore had no one immediately available to drive the fire engine to the site.
Proximate cause was shortage of staff due to overlapping emergency calls. One crew of two went out in an ambulance, then a recall request brought in one more firefighter — short one of the two it takes to run the fire engine.
The chief was quoted in Shaw’s article as saying he’s been warning of this possibility for years, and FD annual reports and meeting minutes support his contention.
DeKalb opened its fourth fire station last year in the face of rising volumes of ambulance calls and specifically the growing phenomenon of simultaneous and overlapping calls for medical services. Volumes are and have been rising steadily for years here, even while DeKalb’s population has continued to shrink.
Call volume was mentioned in a report on a conflict about a station closure in Bloomington, which I picked up on this site recently. Maybe it’s a statewide problem.
I would encourage folks generally to look through their fire departments’ latest annual reports to see if call volumes are a developing issue in their communities. The reports are generally no problem to find online.

Have to give the Rauners some love and credit for treating the Art Institute right by donating their Norman Rockwell painting to it.
