State Senator Karina Villa launches a new campaign ad that will air on television and digital platforms today. Senator Villa is the only candidate in the State Comptroller Race that continues to show voters that she is not bought by MAGA millionaires or billionaires, nor corrupt crypto interests. Senator Villa is the only candidate who stood up to Trump and his ICE regime, and will fight to make billionaires pay their fair share.
“It is time for billionaires to pay their fair share” said Karina Villa, “Budgets are moral documents, we cannot balance the budget by slashing services on people’s backs. We should be safeguarding vital services where the federal government is coming up short.”
* The ad jabs Rep. Margaret Croke and Holly Kim, but doesn’t mention Rep. Stephanie Kifowit…
Well, I suppose it’s an A for red meat content for the Democratic base. But, if you rate it based on the office she is running for it’s a F. None of that is relevant to the Comptroller.
Seems very odd to run an attack ad when Villa hasn’t even addressed why she is qualified.

I’m supporting Villa, and these are smart issues to hit Croke and Kim on, but that background music would make me turn the channel immediately. Giving it a C.

Part of the path to victory is name recognition, which, in this race, is relatively low for all of the candidates. Naming two of your opponents (in sound and image), is not a good move. On top of that, what does the comptroller have to do with ICE? Even people who aren’t sure what the comptroller does probably know it does not have anything to do with ICE.
F
Recommendation: Your opponents know the kind of ad to make - name yourself, explain what the office does and how you fit.
A for the Democrats who have T….derangement syndrome. but F for what she’s running for. there is not one bit in that ad that talks about the office Standing up to ICE does not qualify someone to be Comptroller.
Wow, running scared I see Sen. Villa? Can’t run on your own or have something substantive to say about the office, so you make up lies and attack others. What a bad, sad look.
I’d give it a C. I understand she’s campaigning on the issue of the day but this ad could have literally been run by any Democratic candidate for any office. It’s simply not memorable as it’s lost in a sea of ads basically saying the same thing. Give me something original. Or better yet tell me what you’re going to do if elected to make the office better.
Strong negative ad. Given the number of seconds one has it can be hard ti squeeze every thing into one ad and the claims about her opponents are close enough to be accurate and if the opponents want to explain, okay, fine, but these are things that her opponents don’t want to talk about even if it is to add context or clarification.
Her full name is in the ad 3 times, her name is used 4 times. Someone understands name ID. A good contrast to that Brotowski guy.
It’s a dud because Villa basically broke every rule about political ads. She featured her opponents by name. She failed to list any qualifications or why she seeks the comptroller job. She put out an ad that is so generic and so irrelevant to the actual office she wants that it just fades into the ether of other political ads. Her asking “who do you trust?” is not the same as an appeal, “I ask for your vote”. (In fact, that question many cause voters to arrive at a answer different from the one she is hinting at.) D-

Grade B+. I don’t think most voters understand what the comptroller does, or who would qualify to perform that job.
People do know who they hate, and that’s the current federal administration. So it’s not a bad bet for a candidate to connect to that emotion.
It’s my fault for not following this race closely enough, but I was leaning Kim and hadn’t heard about her crypto involvement, and now I don’t know. So that worked at least.

Maybe a campaign ad should focus on the job you are running to fill. Tell me why you are qualified to do the job of Comptroller.

You can’t go wrong attacking Trump as a Democrat in Illinois but then hitting two of your opponents as well all in a 30-second ad feels rushed. C-.

C-minus. The people are yearning for competent, boring governance. Give them what they want.

Unless you can point to polling which shows that’s what Democratic primary voters want in a candidate, the please just speak for yourself here.
This has been an unwritten rule for many a year.
