Unclear on the concept
Tuesday, Mar 24, 2026 - Posted by Rich Miller
The state’s planning to spend $5 million? I wouldn’t be too sure about that since the bill in question was not even assigned to a Senate committee. One of the reasons why I started doing the “It’s just a bill” posts is precisely because of goofy stories like this. Not trying to say that the provision could be included in the final budget. Just saying there’s no evidence of that yet, so claiming that the state is planning to spend the money is ludicrous. It’s. Just. A. Bill. Stuck. In. Committee.

When responding to the IPI types, I’d ask “Were you alive when the Constitution of 1970 was adopted?” With these “legislators” I’m asking “You ever see Schoolhouse Rocks! ??

I know it’s not the point of the post, but given how massive plant-based and lab-grown meat will be in the not-too-distant future it actually seems like a decent usage of state funds to me, lol.

Pushing a story opposing every goofy bill Rep. Miller files would be a full-time job. I imagine the legislators who might comment on them are too busy passing their own bills. I guess when you’ve only had two bills signed into law after seven years in the GA, you find yourself with a lot of free time.

“The Democrats and ‘greenies,’ along with those who live in fantasy, are always trying to create something artificial to replace what nature produces on its own.”
Of course Rep. Miller is right, we should try to only eat food that nature produces on its own, like genetically modified crops that have been sprayed with pesticides and harvested by 15-ton computer-driven combines. /s
Also take note of the not-so-subtle jab at trans people with the “live in fantasy” bit.

Should we call this the “Soylent Green” bill??
Wait…”Soylent Green is people (banned punctuation)”
Movie: Soylent Green, 1973.

=== low-testosterone men in skinny jeans===
What style jeans does RFK Jr wear to the gym? And what kind of gender affirming care is he receiving?

People, let’s stay on topic.
Rep. Miller (no relation) is just doing what he does, apparently egged on by a reporter who thinks that a bill stuck in Assignments means “Illinois plans to pump $5 million into alternative protein research”

At least with a random substantive bill, it could end up actually moving.
When it comes to this story, when was the last time the General Assembly passed a standalone appropriations bill? When Adlai was governor? It ain’t moving.

Reporters could do better to avoid taking the bait and reporting on a bill that will not see daylight. Or make a few calls to see whether leadership is seriously considering things.
Also, Illinois lawmakers could help by moving bills through the committee and voting on them, as the process is supposed to work in theory. More bills need to be voted down in committee.
It is so common for bills to languish, then get worked into shell bills, and be dropped in the last week. It doesn’t mean that will be the case here, but it does give life to the narrative that the deadlines are arbitrary and anything can come back in a split second.

It’s not even that much money in terms of research but I’d rather have Illinois doing the research than other states or nations.
