Our Democracy Could Be Decided By A Coin Toss
Thursday, Apr 30, 2020 - Posted by Advertising Department [The following is a paid advertisement.] Democrats, who have a supermajority in both legislative chambers, were assumed to control the 2021 remap. However, a move by the Census Bureau could delay population data being sent to the states until July 31, 2021 putting that control in jeopardy. If census officials win a delay, the Illinois Constitution outlines a process that calls for the appointment of an eight-member commission, split evenly between Democrats and Republicans, to draw maps. If they cannot agree, a ninth member – either Democrat or Republican – is randomly chosen, allowing either party the opportunity to gerrymander to their partisan advantage. Our democracy is too important to be left to a game of chance. We need an independent, nonpartisan redistricting commission to determine maps that are fair and equitable for all communities across Illinois. Let’s end partisan gerrymandering and create a process that gives power back to the people.
