Re: Brady–McLean County is a center right county. Illinios? Not so much.

Re: Dillard–didn’t you say by “sun rise” I’ll have the lead last night? When exactly will you know?

  2. - UISer - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:31 pm:

    Rich,

Any word on what is taking so long with the remaining counting? Also, how was the nap?

  3. - Anon - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:36 pm:

Dillard also predicted last night he would be up by the end of the night…yet he’s still down.

Brady has been watching too many tv talk shows and must be confusing the national political compass with this State.

  4. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:37 pm:

Note to the NRSC: change the music in the ad to something more ominous sounding. Better yet, just use the theme to the Godfather until the copyright lawyers ask you to stop.

  5. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:40 pm:

By sundown? We’re not making a Western here.

  6. - RMW Stanford - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:40 pm:

I seem to remember Dillard predicting he would have the lead by sunrise too. Now he is even further back, Dillard might still win but if I were him I would stop making predictions.

  7. - Illinois Repub - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:44 pm:

I guess the national GOP has decided Italian-American votes are not needed. Go ahead and offend that block.

  8. - Leave a Light on George - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:47 pm:

Looks like Alexi needs a few more buffers,

  9. - shore - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:48 pm:

I think the most effective argument on alexi isn’t that he’s corrupt I think its the cost of corruption to the state by blago’s transgressions.

  10. - Mighty M. Mouse - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:48 pm:

The White House approached the Illinois governor race throughtout with a 100% hands-off attitude. Now Obama has called Quinn to congratulate him. Do you think Comptroller Hynes can take the hint?

  11. - Anon:6:99 - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:49 pm:

Still proud of teh Kirk-Rutherford distinction

  12. - RJW - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:52 pm:

Where is this “100 vote difference” Dillard keeps referring to reflected? If there is indeed an updated vote count why hasn’t it been posted in the returns yet?

  13. - Responsa - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 1:57 pm:

The Sopranos was one of the great TV franchises of all time. Everybody watched it because they undertood it was about American psychology, not a slam at a particular ethnic group. The NRSC ad is a winner.

  14. - Still Gettin Twisted - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 2:02 pm:

how can it take Cook County this long to count ballots?

  15. - Will County Woman - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 2:07 pm:

because it’s cook county and you know how cook county is: untrusworthy.

  16. - ToddAF - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 2:13 pm:

We’ll be seeing anti-Giannoulias ads like this one all through November. I don’t think Alexi stands a chance against Kirk. Look how close Hoffman, a virtual unknown outside Chicago, came to beating him in the primary. Between the multiple Broadway Bank problems and the Bright Start issue, Kirk has plenty of ammo for negative ads.

  17. - Bring Back Boone's - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 2:22 pm:

Illinois Repub- I was thinking the same thing. What a distasteful hit piece. Blatantly offensive with that fake accent.

  18. - Still Gettin Twisted - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 2:32 pm:

i just went to the site and it looks like all the cook cty votes have been counted.. Brady leads by 509 now

  19. - Downstate - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 2:33 pm:

Hey, we’re down to 73 precincts left and Brady up by 509 votes. Twelve hours ago I think he was up by 510 or something. Maybe I should go back to bed.

  20. - Illinois Repub - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 2:33 pm:

I agree - the fake accent is the worst. Really cheezy. The national people are also completely cluess if they don’t realize the whole Mob thing is a road the IL GOP doesn’t want to go down. And note to the NRSC, for your information, it’s called the Outfit here. No one says the Mob.

  21. - cassandra - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 2:40 pm:

I don’t think Alexi is corrupt. I think he’s inept. Kirk should be able to point that out in a convincing way. He doesn’t have to go the corruption route.

Details on the bank’s risky dealings while Alexi wasplaying a major role there–even if the bank survives, it’s not pretty. Details on Bright Start–there have been some convincing articles written detailing serious issues of judgment. Do we really want this 33 year old voting on how to direct trillions of dollars of national wealth–at a time of jaw-dropping deficits?
Just because he used to play basketball with Obama? Kirk doesn’t have to play it nasty. He just has to pull together the facts with clarity.
Ahd keep hammering on them–the country’s fiscal situation is almost certain to get worse over the year. Reminding folks of their personal share of the national debt wouldn’t hurt. And the high likelihood of a tax increase-a big one–on everyone to pay it off.

  22. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 3:00 pm:

The Republican ad on Giannoulais is rotten. I don’t like ads that are too cute by half. The faux Italian accent, the Wise Guy vocabulary, took relevant facts and spun them into a fictionalized piece of entertainment.

I don’t know who the audience is supposed to be for this, but the ad demands that listeners laugh and play along regarding a topic that is not a laughing manner.

    Grade: C-

And if the GOP prays as it’s candidates claims they do, then they better be sending a lot of prayers up to whoever can put Dillard over the top. Brady doesn’t have a prayer in Illinois. Illinois is a “center-right” state?

I’m a conservative, and even I know not to even pretend enough to say something that ridiculous.

At least Brady is admitting that the key to his win is not to be found north of I-80, where he doesn’t stand a chance.

  23. - Team Sleep - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 3:08 pm:

Two points can be made here.

    1. I sure as heck hope that the ILGOP is serious about unity. No more disinenginuity, please.

    2. What is wrong with the NRSC? Stop it, please, and wait a while to show a similar ad.

  24. - Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 3:26 pm:

The Alexi ad is brutal. And when you put a few million behind it, it (or a 30 second version of it) will be very effective. If team Hoffman had something like this, they might have won.

  25. - A matter of trust - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 3:39 pm:

Did McKenna attend the unity event?

  26. - Screwball - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 3:51 pm:

One of life’s great mysteries is why is everything that comes out of DC always so bad? Do they really want to make the race about Tony Rezko? Because the only candidate who has taken money from Rezko is Kirk, so go ahead and make the race about that. Morons.

  27. - Champaign Dweller - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 5:17 pm:

Maybe Brady doesn’t have much support north of I-80, but let’s see what Quinn does in the run up to November–if he continues to borrow, can’t explain the early release program, and we have the Blago criminal trial all summer, there may be plenty of votes against Quinn and the Democrats, or at a minimum, not a lot of support.

  28. - Hisgirlfriday - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 6:25 pm:

    Screwball,

Ha! I didn’t even think about whether Rezko had donated to Kirk.

  29. - Frankly Speaking - Wednesday, Feb 3, 10 @ 6:25 pm:

I haven’t seen the final statewide turnout numbers but assume somewhere we were in the 25% +/- range statewide of registered voters so do we have 12 to 15% of eligible voters braving the February elements to shape our states future?

That’s my gripe as I try to sound so much smarter the day after elections then the day before.

If you’re stil reading this rant I’ll skip any possible chance for some brillance of the moment and move onto the questions I had pre-primary and still have pre-recount.

Can Illinois’ politcos D’s and R’s govern long enough to actually help Illinois move from it’s position as a
    -late night comedy punch line?
    -budget disaster
    -leader in job loss
    -leader in unemployment

We’ll all know after it’s over with a couple of budgets for the next two years that most likely will include punishing the weakest among us combined with nine numbing months of political posturing and platitudes overflowing from all of the inside baseball (Springfield politics) perspectives crashing against the national “interest” in the Land of Lincoln.

    sign me up!
