How not to win friends and influence people

Tuesday, Oct 30, 2012

* I’ve been telling subscribers about this weird incident for the past couple of days, but the Sun-Times has a post up, so I figured you heathen non-subscribers might want to see this as well.

Sen. Marty Sandoval (D-Chicago) busted up a candidates’ forum on Saturday held at a suburban church

Sandoval stood on a chair and attempted to shout his disdain for Republicans during a forum Saturday. The crowd drowned him out by chanting the Spanish word for “respect,” and event organizers and a police officer herded him out of the church hall where the event was held.

“The Republicans are not with our people,” Sandoval is heard saying in Spanish as he walks out of the building.

Sandoval is a supporter of Kathleen Willis, the Democratic candidate against veteran Republican state Rep. Angelo “Skip” Saviano of Elmwood Park in the 77th District race. Willis’ campaign has received heavy support from Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) as well as $5,000 from Sandoval on Oct. 15, state records show. Sandoval’s Senate district includes Madigan’s district. […]

Sandoval offered no apologies, saying Saviano and his supporters are racists who had made “a farce of democracy,” allegedly co-opting the community group that organized the forum.

Sandoval doesn’t represent the district, but he has very close ties to Speaker Madigan.

* The must-watch video

Sheesh.

he looks so good on paper.

  2. - Jim - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:37 pm:

And to think that he is the most intelligent of the Senate Democrats. Sure can’t tell it from the video.

  3. - How Ironic - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:40 pm:

Sandoval is a bully, and doesn’t have an ounce of class in his body. I was continually amazed at his utter lack of knowledge during committee meetings.

And I’m a life long Dem. That guy needs to go.

  4. - walkinfool - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:43 pm:

Disgraceful. It’s always all about Marty. He’s one reason not to trust the Hispanic Caucus. Respect goes both ways.

  5. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:44 pm:

At least Sandoval kept his close on, so I think we are all thankful for that.

Still would like to think Saviano pulls this race out.

  6. - ChicagoR - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:44 pm:

Sandoval is the most intelligent Senate Dem? I don’t believe that based on some of the slipshod legislation he has introduced.

  7. - Slick Willy - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:50 pm:

    Classy.

  8. - 10th ward - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:50 pm:

Hmm. What did Skip do to deserve that? He is the most bipartsian state rep

  9. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:50 pm:

If I knew how to say “what goes around, comes around” in Spanish, that’s what I’d be saying to him now.

  10. - siriusly - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:51 pm:

Wait, now you’re telling us that $andoval is a total nutball? I don’t beleive it.

  11. - Team Sleep - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:52 pm:

Unbelievably disrespectful. I’ve attended many debates and candidates forums (both as a staffer and as a rep for my candidate) and I’ve never seen anything like that. Sure, people get upset and sometimes say off-color things, but nothing like that.

  12. - LincolnLounger - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:55 pm:

Good Lord, you would think control of the House depended on that race. What could cause him to be so unhinged? Bizarre.

  13. - Old Milwaukee - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 1:55 pm:

From time to time Marty needs Republican help to pass some bills. Especially because Marty is not always the most popular guy in his caucus.

Hopefully Republicans will remember he thinks they are all evil.

I don’t know. Kind of tame by Melrose Park rules.

Nobody was found in the trunk of their car at O’Hare long-term parking. No bombs exploded at Tom’s Steakhouse.

They roll a little differently in Melrose, and the relatively new Hispanic dynamic adds a little something to the village’s rough-and-tumble traditions.

This it the place where two years ago the police chief was convicted of shaking down local businesses, extorting them to hire on-duty police officers to protect their businesses.

Chief Vito Scavo, that dude shook down everybody, including Kiddieland.

“It would be a shame if something would happen to the spinning teacups, God forbid….”

    Wait, Skip is a Republican?

  17. - Plutocrat03 - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 2:15 pm:

It does look like he has a problem….

Must be the pressure of getting his money’s worth from his contribution to his opponent.

  18. - Responsa - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 2:23 pm:

Although the film is grainy and choppy it looked like some of the people in the room were really squirming, looking around kind of alarmed, and moving their chairs a little to get further away from him in case he was going to go even more postal. Not good optics for him or Dems.

  19. - chitown - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 2:29 pm:

Sandoval is a bully, plain and simple. He’s not very popular in Springfield and is ostracized by most members of the Hispanic Caucus.

  20. - 1776 - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 2:42 pm:

Offensive and typical Marty but he got the intended point across. This was done for a specific purpose and my guess is that he accomplished that goal.

  21. - Liandro - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 2:50 pm:

    Él me avergüenza.

  22. - Jaded - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 3:00 pm:

Anyone who has ever dealt with the Senator, will not be at all surprised by this. I have personally witnessed him trying to intimidate members of his own caucus (Democrats not evil Republicans) when they disagree with him. Several of them will NEVER support any legislation he proposes because of his actions.
All I can say to his comment about being “a farce of democracy” is that it takes one to know one.

  23. - Mittuns - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 3:04 pm:

    Hurricane Sandy.

I disagree. I don’t think any thought went into this. My guess is that he showed up and didnt like the response he got… so he doubled down.

Really, he is the worst of the worst. Mostly because he’s smart enough to know he’s acting like a fool.

  25. - Skeeter - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 3:11 pm:

The Senator thinks that anybody on the other side must be a racist?

That line is offensive on so many levels. The Senator of all people should know that racism is real and is a major problem for many communities.

Screaming “RACISM” when somebody crosses you is an insult to all the real victims of racism.

  26. - Louis G. Atsaves - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 3:11 pm:

Makes Joe Walsh look like a choirboy!

  27. - Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 3:13 pm:

  28. - Liandro - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 3:31 pm:

“No me eches el taze, carnal”.

    I lol’d, heh.

  29. - Bobby - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 3:39 pm:

Marty endorsed John McCain over Obama four years ago.

  30. - mongo - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 4:22 pm:

The good Senator has a horrible reputation in his community…he won’t recognize that others might actually have a good idea. This stuff is total baloney. Representative Saviano is really more like an independent than a D or R. It would be a great loss to Springpatch should Skip not grace its halls.

  31. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 4:25 pm:

===It would be a great loss to Springpatch should Skip not grace its halls. ===

Whatever happens, Skip will be around a long while. Bet on it.

  32. - Esquire - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 4:31 pm:

Sandoval is, was and has always been a “Cicero” type of political thug, nothing new here.

  33. - Witness Protectorate - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 4:48 pm:

Cicero meets Melrose Park. What could go wrong?

  34. - mongo - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 5:05 pm:

Rich, that is true and Skip would be a formidable lobbyist for…heck, you name it.

  35. - Anonymous45 - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 5:10 pm:

Skip may be more effective in Springfield as an unelected official, if you know what I mean…

  36. - Eye in the sky - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 5:18 pm:

I need to learn Spanish. When I first saw this I assumed he was advertising free scholarships.

  37. - WazUp - Tuesday, Oct 30, 12 @ 7:27 pm:

    “Scholarships for everybody!”

  38. - Fire Anita Alvarez - Wednesday, Oct 31, 12 @ 8:15 am:

and now Congressman Luis Gutierrez is going to endorse Saviano!
