*** UPDATED x1 *** Rep. Monique Davis to speak about her “cops killing kids” comments
Friday, Jul 19, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller * According to NBC5, Rep. Monique Davis will hold a press conference at 2 o’clock to discuss her comments this week on a Detroit radio station. Davis, as you already know, claimed she’d heard people say that Chicago cops may be behind some of the murders of her city’s African-American kids. When pressed, she said she didn’t know if the cops were or were not killing kids. You can watch the 2 o’clock presser by clicking here. I will probably be out of the office by then, so help us live blog the event in comments. * Rep. Davis has easily survived several serious Democratic primary challenges over the years. She’s infamous for her outrageous remarks and she usually loves the attention. We’ll have to see what happens today. *** UPDATE *** Rep. Davis told reporters she does not believe that the police are behind the murders. She also said many of her friends are policemen. Rep. Davis, however, adamantly refused to apologize. ...Adding… Her claims that she didn’t say the cops were behind the killings is a lie…

it’s so hot, we can use it to make the popcorn for this one.
- siriusly - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 1:02 pm:
irresponsible
Next time a thug shoots at a cop, it would not be a stretch to say that she gives credibility to their motivation. She is an elected public official, she cannot make statements like that.
Outrageous isn’t the word. This kind of talk for a public official is downright liable.
- grand old partisan - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 1:19 pm:
The Representative has crossed the line from “outrageous” to “reckless.” And these weren’t just “remarks,” they were essentially “accusations.” In other words, just isn’t just the latest example of an infamously goofy person being goofy; this is something new entirely.
- Chavez-respecting Obamist - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 1:29 pm:
I hope she’s announcing her resignation this afternoon.
- 10th ward - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 1:31 pm:
@Chavez…we can only wish! No way she would step down especially this soon after her comments. She is in “damage control mode”
- Rich Miller - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 1:32 pm:
===She is in “damage control mode” ===
Or, “Up yours, I didn’t say anything wrong,” mode.
- RonOglesby - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 1:56 pm:
I think she doubles down… Says something along the lines of “Well that is what people in my neighborhood think!”
- siriusly - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 1:58 pm:
Words have meaning. Or they don’t. Which was is it Monique D. Davis ?
- PublicServant - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:00 pm:
It’s my understanding that she’s heard rumors that people are misinterpreting her remarks, so she’s going to set the record straight at two, before it gets dark and it’s too dangerous to be outside where she lives.

Monigue presser is on. She says that she does not believe that the police are involved in the shootings.
- RonOglesby - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:03 pm:
Complaining that 70% of all murders in Chicago are unsolved… “We must be united” to fight violence problem… then talks about calling in the Guard again.
(I agree) she says what is going on in Chicago is not normal and we shouldn’t act like it is.
“Some people in my community believe police may be involved”…
She says she doesn’t believe it, but she spouted it.
“Some of my best friends are police officers”
- RonOglesby - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:05 pm:
Yeah, she is walking back the statement.
Says she doesn’t believe it, but is doubling down on “many people in my community believe”…
- RonOglesby - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:05 pm:
That should have said “ISN’T walking it back”
Bringing up Burge, and the bar beating, But went on a radio station and put it out.
- Nearly Normal - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:06 pm:
She says the Gov has not answered her letter asking for the National Guard and IL State Police to work with the CPD
She is not going to apologize for her statement because it is from her community based on past experiences with the police.
- RonOglesby - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:06 pm:
She is chastising the reporter… she should chastise the community people that are spreading rumours like that.
- So. ILL - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:07 pm:
Where is her press person? Holy cow end this tragic show, someone!
- RonOglesby - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:08 pm:
She gets away with anything. whatever. This is what the people in that area voted for. If this is a valid rep Illinois and Chicago gets what it deserves.
- PublicServant - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:10 pm:
Yeah Ron. Where’s Mike Bost when ya need him…
- RonOglesby - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:10 pm:
LOL calling for the days of “Officer Friendly”.
She is putting the bad relations between her community and the police ALL on the police. What about the community that fosters the environment?
- RonOglesby - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:12 pm:
Public servant… At least Bost did go on a show and say that some of the murders have police involved. She points out an issue (people vs police) but exacerbates the issue herself.
- Very Anon - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:12 pm:
I heard some people talking that some Rep. Davis and her staff were behind all the shootings in Chicago….Duh

DING DING DING… Winner.
70% of all murders unsolved. Like 90% all in areas that have no snitch policies! You need to look at yourself before you look elsewhere for the problem.

You can’t refuse to cooperate with the police and then get mad when they are unable to solve crimes in your community.

Davis lashes out at reporter questioning her decision to repeat the rumor about cops shooting children. She turns it around and claims she is being attacked.
- RonOglesby - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:21 pm:
On one hand the police she are praising are the same ones that her community will not talk to when a crime is committed. Let me get this right:
**We dont trust them, because they dont solve crime. They dont solve crime because we dont talk to them**
That is some circular stuff there.
- grand old partisan - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:23 pm:
She says the Police “need assistance.” Yes, absolutely….they need the assistance of witnesses who might be able to help solve these murders!
The fact that she refuses to even try to balance her complaints with an acknowledgment of that fact shows what a worthless excuse for a community “leader” she really is!
- Nearly Normal - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:23 pm:
Press conference over. Monique deflects criticism claiming she was only repeating what she has been told by her community. Says the CPD needs more help, etc. Claims it is her job to speak up for her community.
Blah, blah, blah.
- Norseman - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:31 pm:
Oh, I understand. She’s just letting us know what someone in the community told her.
I need to let my fellow bloggers know that someone in the community told me that little green creatures are invading Illinois tomorrow.
- Responsa - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:52 pm:
What you said on the Detroit radio program was concerning to those who heard about it and was a problem for your credibility. But your remarks there were not all that widely known here in Chicago. Having the press conference this afternoon here in Chicago to “explain” what you said in Detroit was a very bad idea, Monique.
- Skeeter - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 2:59 pm:
Why should she apologize?
It is not like there are any consequences for a State Rep. acting badly.
She can — and has — acted like a racist and has never faced the slightest sanction from House leadership.
So now we add cops to gays and Jews as people she doesn’t like.
She will get the exact same (or better) committee assignments and if she has a challenger, she will get support from Madigan.
Nothing will change.

LOL!
“See, it’s not me. It’s my constituents. They are tbe crazy ones.
And yes, I repeat everything they tell me… even when I disagree with the statement or feel it might be improper or wildly inaccurate to make.”
- Formerly Known As... - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 4:35 pm:
By the way, does she still owe rent on her office?
Or have we officially established a separate set of rules in Illinois for the rulers and the ruled?
- Just The Way It Is One - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 4:53 pm:
Rep. Davis: they’re doin’ it alright, no they’re not, well–I don’t know, some of ‘em are my friends, but I won’t apologize for what I said, although I really didn’t say that…! HUH??!
I feel like I did when I’d run around in circles with my kids when they were younger and got REAL DIZzy real FAST!!! Amusing stuff, albeit about a serious matter on a Sizzlin’ Hot Friday in Illinois…!
- Amalia - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 4:53 pm:
I’m deeply upset about her initial comments and the interview at 2. she is disrespectful of police officers and accusing government of covering up racist killings. her conduct is not fit for public office.
- Fed up - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 4:56 pm:
“Does she stil owe rent” good question even better one did she ever return the artwork that was stolen from Chicago state university that just happened to be in her office.
She won’t even acknowledge the recklessness of her statements when a police officer gets shot or shots on of her constitutants. The police ofc’s want to go home at the end of the day. Davis just made everyone less safe.
- Skeeter - Friday, Jul 19, 13 @ 4:58 pm:
Amalia,
As if “Dr. Bagel” was not enough to disqualify her from holding office?
And again, how did House leadership respond to her prior comments?
