* Republican lieutenant governor nominee Evelyn Sanguinetti on her role in office should she be elected this November

“It depends on the governor. It’s up to the governor to give us a role. And so with Bruce Rauner we’re going to work as a team. I will be his partner. And wherever he’s not, I will be able to make decisions in his stead. And it’s a great deal for the taxpayer because we’ll both be working hand in hand with one another.”

Emphasis added for obvious reasons. If she’s gonna have gubernatorial powers, perhaps the Rauner campaign ought to explain what those would be.

* Video

*** UPDATE *** This isn’t the first time she’s said something like that. From a “helpful” Democrat, we have another quote from Sanguinetti at the June 7th Palatine Republican Township meeting…

“So, the governor must have chosen somebody who is likeminded to run alongside him so, should your governor be unable to serve, your lieutenant governor must be, without skipping a beat, able to lead on day one so Bruce and I are going to have a partnership. I’m not going to stand back and wait until something happens or anything like that. It’s going to be a partnership. Wherever he is not, I will be there in his stead making the hard decisions.

Audio…

So, she’s not going to wait for Rauner to become incapacitated before she steps in and does something? Considering that she’s such a hardcore social conservative, the Quinnsters could have a field day with this goofiness.

She could be the “Pat Quinn” of the Rauner regime. A coveted position that only Pat Quinn and Rod Blagojevich fully understood when Pat was in the important position of Lt. Governor.

  2. - Reality Check - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 3:33 pm:

This should give serious pause to people concerned with Sanguinetti’s extreme positions against women’s reproductive choice and against marriage equality.

Is that the Law Professor not understanding the Constitution?

Is “Slip and Sue” going to be signing legislation is Bruce is in Manhattan, Montana, West Palm Beach?

That quote should scare anyone who knows “Slip and Sue” Ssnguinetti is not qualified to run the 5th largest state in America, and she thinks she SHOULD, when Bruce is not around…

Sounds like a “slip” of the tongue to me.

  6. - Demoralized - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 3:39 pm:

Is this like playing one parent against the other? Find whichever parent you think will give you the decision you want to hear and ask them. Or conversely, tell one parent that the other parent said you could already do something.

“Governor Rauner, I asked Evelyn when you weren’t around and she said it was OK.”

  8. - William j Kelly - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 3:55 pm:

I am open to the concept that the lieutenant governor could be ‘a trillion different things,’ I just hope that for the sake of Illinois none of those trillion things will ever have anything to do with Evelyn slipperynellie!

  9. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 3:57 pm:

    - AA -, for the win!

    I would really want to know;

What is the campaign’s reaction to someone who is Bruce’s partner, equal partner, that her words and actions, no matter the constitutionality of her role being nothing as she describes, but is a shadow governor to get own governor.

This is not Texas, we don’t elect in the General Election a d
Separate LG, with roles, some more powerful than the governor!

    Attention “Slip and Sue”;

Here is your role. You are suppose to be able to run the 5th largest state in America, if the governor’s office is vacant, not when the givernor’s office has a “Gone Fishin’ today ” sign.

They better hide her but good, she is barely qualified to be a first term city councilman, now she WILL take over, will be beyond a supporter, but THE governor during hard choices?

Where o’ where are those telling me how great she is?

This Personal Injury plaintiff, who teaches the law…

Let that fester, just for a moment..

…and goes out and speaks about the role of LG is to make the hard choices, with no constitutional power to do so, and will place this state in upheaval as “Slip and Sue” usurps the powers granted to all 3 branches of government in a power grab, fueled by ego, and having nothing of the experience to understand that her perceived role, and her actual role will never match.

    Never.

  13. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:06 pm:

Who is this person and why are they being quoted?

  14. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:10 pm:

She is Pro-Life, so now Bruce better make sure he is “in” the day any notification bills are run, and passed(?)

Where does “Slip and Sue” stand on every issue?

We can’t get Bruce to commit to any policy, now we Illinoisans need to worry about “Governor Pro Tem” Sanguinetti will just take over?

Where don’t they differ, so I know the danger policies that might spark a Coup?

  15. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:14 pm:

Perhaps she’s thinking of California. From Wikipedia - The powers of an acting governor came into dispute during the 1980 Democratic primary presidential campaign of Jerry Brown, then governor of California. When he was campaigning out of state, which was often in late 1979 and early 1980, Mike Curb, a Republican who was then serving as Lieutenant Governor of California often used his position as acting governor to veto legislation, promulgate executive orders, issue proclamations, and to do other things that Brown would not likely have done had he been present in the state. This eventually resulted in litigation, much of which went in Curb’s favor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acting_governor

  16. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:15 pm:

Will this be the first Illinois governor worried that his LG thinks this state is a banana republic, and if she feels an override of her boss is needed or warranted, Bruce could be trapped in a bathroom, while “Slip and Sue” starts signing and vetoing, appointing and firing, pardoning and commuting…

    Who is this woman?

  17. - Give Me A Break - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:15 pm:

Evelyn I think the more important question for you to address is what do you know about roofing and plumbing? If he wins, I’m pretty sure Bruce won’t want to pay for union tradesmen to do some needed home repairs and I’m thinking he turns to you ASAP to handle the hard decisions about color of roofing and location of sewer connections.

  18. - TCB - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:26 pm:

So she believe in term limits for a governor, ok. But isn’t a little silly that believes it’s ok to run for Governor after being a Lt Governor for 8 years? I mean, after all, her role as Lt Gov is to share the Governor’s role with the actual Governor…….seems like a way to beat the term limits idea that her boss is proposing.

  19. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:28 pm:

    I apologize to Jason Plummer;

You were just ill-equipped to be governor, and your eyes were too big for your resume.

Evelyn Sanguinetti actually believes the Illinois Constitution is something that is just a “guideline”. Maybe Evelyn learned about the Illinois constitution while getting her piano playing degree. Notice she never touts that piano playing degree?

Jason knew he was a 2nd banana, “Slip and Sue” thinks she lives in a banana republic.

Jason Plummer’s resume screamed unqualified; “Slip and Sue” just screams, showing how unqualified she is

Jason Plummer was hidden as not to hurt Bill Brady. “Slip and Sue” is being hidden as not to hurt Illinois.

Jason, I owe you “a beer”, in the sense that your delusional idea of running this state never bordered on a veiled Coup to get your way, and be proud of that.

Evelyn is pathetic in thought. Power is given by the people, in hopes that the power is used for the good of Illinois, not to fulfill an agenda that the people thought they never voted for.

  20. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:31 pm:

Didn’t she also say that as Lt. Governor, she got 10% off at all Red Lobsters on Tuesdays?

  21. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:34 pm:

Someone needs to give her the bad news. Rich, you are a political journalist/detective, so it is required by law to be you, or a wine steward/detective.

  22. - Madame Defarge - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:36 pm:

Not the current, but the previous Illinois Constitution did give the Lt Gov the powers of the Governor when the Governor was out of the state.

  23. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:36 pm:

    OW-
Jason Plummer is so over you. He won’t even like you on Facebook.

  24. - slider - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:37 pm:

Bruce, wow, look out, more security, i’m scared for you, us, illinois, its funny, BUT scarry.

  25. - Raunerbot - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:39 pm:

If this is the best Quinnsters and OW can come up with to go after this lady, team Rauner has no worries. Only the Gov can sign a bill or veto, and he can delegate tasks and authority to his LG as he sees fit. Not seeing any problems with her lawyer speak “in his stead”.

When did she become a hardcore social conservative? Pro life and traditional marriage is not that extreme, sounds like positions of Willy’s “My Party” candidates.

  26. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:43 pm:

Rauner Crew - you want to be bold, show leadership, be taken seriously, you would consider adding Rev. Meeks, and let “Slip and Sue” spend more time voting on stop signs and settlements against Wheaton, on the city council.

    Rev. Meeks would be setting a tone that Sanguinetti now can’t;

    A partner.

While Vallas speaks in language counter to Quinn, Quinn won’t have to worry that outside his door, Vallas plots to make his agenda a Governor Pro Tem agenda, ready to spring a trap as Quinn can’t leave his desk for 5 minutes.

This is a prime example of knowing that moving up the ranks is important to the governing of a state. Sometimes… having experience moving through the channels of governing is needed to keep the ship safe through the locks.

Dangerous. Not a character anymore, not a caricature anymore either.

Evelyn’s dangerous ways, make Jason’s child-like responses seem trivial. Evelyn’s game, is a game of Risk.

  27. - Raunerbot - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:43 pm:

Why the use of the term “banana republic” Willy?

  28. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:43 pm:

  29. - slider - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:47 pm:

“i will be there making the hard decisions in his stead”, i’m pretty sure “making the hard decisions” is the concerning part, but for the record I’d like to hear what her/your/their defintion of lawyer speak “in his stead” means as well? to me, it means when he’s not here.

===Why the use of the term “banana republic” Willy?===

Just like “Glorious Leader Quinn” was running a banana republic when he withheld pay checks…

  33. - Redux - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:56 pm:

Can you imagine the reax if Corinne Wood had said she was going “to make hard decisions” in George Ryan’s stead? Even the almighty Corky didn’t have the hubris to be THAT disrespectful. (Although if the wheels of justice had turned a little faster, she might actually have had the opportunity). The highly offensive S&S IS giving her “boss” a run for his money in one regard though - it’s becoming increasingly difficult to tell which one of them is more delusional.

  34. - OneMan - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 4:59 pm:

When Hastert was speaker pre-9/11 he and Corinne Wood were both at an event I was at. Was struck by how her security detail was bigger than his.

    Cryogenic sleep?

  40. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 5:17 pm:

    - Norseman -,

Let’s be clear; the campaign needs to let the people know we believe in the Constitution, that Illinois is not a 3rd world banana republic where the rule of law will be dictated to by the whims of an unqualified Lt. Governor.

    … Or something like that.

  41. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 5:22 pm:

I hope that the Next Attorney General, Lisa or whomever, will either be ready to have a Coup to overthrow “Slip and Sue”…or in reality, be ready to defend Illinois against possible acts that are blatantly unconstitutional.

We have a Lt. Governor now who lost the Mayoral election in her hometown despite her father being one of the regions most beloved politicians of all time. I think we have acknowledged the Lt. spot is irrelevant to most voters.

The only X-factor is what if Quinn infers he may retire before the end of his term. Not unreasonable at his age. Vallas has problems, but a proven track record with government finance. I don’t think any other issue is as important.

  44. - the Patriot - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 5:27 pm:

That’s a good point. I think workers polish the floors every night. At least, I always see them doing so when I leave late. So if the LG is working late making the hard decisions for the governor, she could wind up making yet another charity very happy.

    * Pie eating, baking, or cake decorating winner
    * Cutest/Ugliest animal; all species
    * Pinewood Derby designs
    * Spelling Bee Awards
    * Guest Judge on ‘Dance Moms’ and others of that ilk.

    That really is about “it”.

If someone had a Cammoli or Hot Dog tasting event, I would gladly volunteer… just really throwing if out there ’cause no one asks me.

  79. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 7:56 pm:

    1) yeah, yeah… “Cammoli” - Cannoli.

    2) Slip and Sue can judge “Dueling ” Pianos, Banjos, Kazoos, any “Dueling” musical instruments, I’m cool with that.

  80. - One to the Dome - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 8:18 pm:

What does she consider a “tough” decision? If she is pro life…then that decision is not “tough” for her.

  81. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 8:50 pm:

She should just go ahead and change her name to Al Haig now. Shorter ballot name, and she seems to think she is in charge here.

  82. - me - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 8:55 pm:

Rauner will be the next governor, and Sanguinetti will be lieutenant governor. Period. Now deal with it.

  83. - Ron Burgundy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 9:03 pm:

^^^ Might want to get a new campaign slogan.

  84. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 9:04 pm:

    - me -,

“You may be right. Evelyn is Crazy. She just might be the lunatic you’re lookin’ for…”

Why is it when it comes to Bruce, Evelyn, anything Rauner, why is it always, “Deal with it”

The compassion from the Raunerbots is mind boggling… It’s like “talking point alpha”.

  85. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 9:09 pm:

Willy, do you think she would do a piano solo of “Slip Slidin’ Away” if I asked nicely?

  86. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 9:12 pm:

    - AA -, should call you “- AAA -”, you are on that “A” game…”A” …

    Well played.

There is always Evelyn’s chance to join a Bon Jovi cover band and play the hits from “Slippery When Wet” …

  87. - siriusly - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 10:55 pm:

I look forward to seeing the Speaker’s expression when co-governor sangunetti demands he show up for one of her hard decisions meetings.

Obviously a matter of perspective. Some might say it sounds like she’s chomping at the bit to take on her new role and understands the various contexts that apply (i.e., what she can do within consitutional constraints and as a “delegate” who can conduct and/or oversee the necessary analyses and fact-findings that might be considered in the Governor’s decision-making processes and role), but perhaps didn’t explain as clearly in the subject quotes.

Depends I suppose on whether one wants to give someone in such a position the “benefit of the doubt” or speculate–and I’d guess that there are just as many who’d be happy to do the former as those who are intrigued by the latter. (Though same may not necessarily be reflected on this thread.)

  93. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 11:47 pm:

    - Anonymous -,

    You can’t rehabilitate “crazy”.

Evelyn “Slip and Sue” Sanguinetti is utterly clueless to what her job would be, and what is scarier, “Slip and Sue” is not qualified to lead the 5th largest state in America, and is willing to be unconstitutional while trying to do a job no one elected her to do; take over for a sitting governor by her own whim.

It’s swell you trying to help her, big his about you let ole “Slip and Sue” speak for herself, … twice.

  94. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 11:48 pm:

“It’s swell you trying to help her, but how about you let ole “Slip and Sue” speak for herself, … twice.”

  95. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 11:53 pm:

=…is not qualified to lead the 5th largest state in America….”

I’m a big believer in the Consitutition–both of them–and believe that “qualifications” are addressed therein as well.

    Just sayin.

===I’m a big believer in the Consitutition–both of them–and believe that “qualifications” are addressed therein as well.===

I know Raunerbots are slow on the uptick, but if all you have is that “Slip and Sue” is constitutionally qualified, that really proves my point to her ability, and her lack thereof.

  97. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Jun 17, 14 @ 11:59 pm:

Time will tell, Willy. In the meantime, you can continue to call me a “Raunerbot” if you’d like–though some mind find that a bit comical as I’ve never considered myself anyone’s “bot”–perhaps even to the possible chagrin of a few.

In the meantime, it’d probably be fair to say I’m definitely in the “I’m willing to give our team the benefit of the doubt unless and until….” column.

  98. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 12:06 am:

Well, - Anonymous -, while giving that benefit if the doubt to the law professor who fails to understand the constitutional duties of what she is running for, I am going to count myself in the column of those refusing to be duped by a LG delusional candidate.

I got extra liability insurance too. If you want to stay where you are, I suggest you get more than me!

  99. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 12:09 am:

–i.e., what she can do within consitutional constraints–

The only thing she could do within “constitutional restraints” is hang around. That’s what the job’s all about.

She’s got some crazy talk going on here where she claims she’ll exercise real power when Rauner is in some other place, whatever that means. I don’t have a clue.

I’m guessing she’s just rambling without thinking about it too much. I can’t believe at this point, or any point, Rauner has seriously told her she’s going to be doing any heavy lifting.

When he’s somewhere else. Whatever that means.

But it would have to be power delegated by Rauner, as the Constitution and the law give the office oogats,

Perhaps Rauner has a comprehensive detailed plan as to this Dynamic Duo model she speaks of.

==I got extra liability insurance too. If you want to stay where you are, I suggest you get more than me! ==

As in the case of the Constitution, there are a few things that are generally quite clear and others that are subject to interpretation–and intentionally so. Most students enjoy interpretation, but I’m more than happy to take a pass on the above-referenced quote as I wouldn’t want to misconstrue it in any way. Though thanks–I suppose for whatever it was intended to mean.

  101. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 12:14 am:

===I’m guessing she’s just rambling without thinking about it too much. I can’t believe at this point, or any point, Rauner has seriously told her she’s going to be doing any heavy lifting.===

    Agreed.

Her rambling and self-importance of her role is a delusion created by her, not expressed to her by Bruce Rauner.

If Bruce is handing off such power(s) to someone with her resume, it puts the stste at severe risk, and that is also an unknown risk, given we have no track record for Evelyn, and no stances or policy ideas to see as a blueprint.

  102. - wordslinger - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 12:19 am:

–As in the case of the Constitution, there are a few things that are generally quite clear and others that are subject to interpretation–and intentionally so–

SECTION 14. LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR - DUTIES
The Lieutenant Governor shall perform the duties and exercise the powers in the Executive Branch that may be delegated to him by the Governor and that may be prescribed by law.–

Yeah, that’s a real brain-teaser. So many ways it could be interpreted.

  103. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 12:22 am:

    That pesky constitution…

  104. - Raunerbot - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 12:49 am:

Had fun Willy? Go to bed. Much to do about nothing, not that it’s prevented you from attacking Evelyn for not being qualified because she is not a member of “your country club.” Hispanic female, elected official, lawyer, former AAG, law professor and community leader. Seems like you hate Rauner so much that you are turning into a Quinn supporter.

  105. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 12:55 am:

    I’m not a Quinn supporter.

Won’t vote for Rauner, Can’t vote for Quinn.

    I sleep, thanks.

    Here is the real “Slip and Sue”;

Former AG, who saw corruption, but didn’t, but did and never reported it, that former AG?

Immigrant family background but can’t get podium time to highlight and help Bruce? I didn’t stop her, lol.

Any first term city council member can run a $30+ Billion budget? Be real, that is not the next step.

“Slip and Sue” is voting on stop sign locations, so of course the next step is trying to straighten out multiple state agencies.

It is real, not pretend. The job is to be governor if need be, she is not a logical choice to take over.

Jason Plummer with a Law Degree and a Personal Injury lawsuit.

    Can’t spin it.

  106. - Raunerbot - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 1:08 am:

What bothers you so much about Evelyn? This banana republic attack is such bs. If it is because you hate Rauner so much fine, but Evelyn is a good woman and is qualified to lead. Our party needs a face lift and your “party” is all about Springfield and people you know. That is pathetic.

  107. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 1:28 am:

Facelift with candidates that lack ability?

    It’s like Brady/Plummer.

Pointing out her failures to be a governor in waiting is not pathetic, but being real to the challenges of running and not having the skill set for the job.

===This banana republic attack is such bs.===

Sounds very much like a Coup, a 3rd world banana republic that has it’s leader looking at its #2 and wondering when will the reach for power begin.

  108. - Upon Further Review - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 7:18 am:

Someone needs to explain to Evelyn that the Illinois Constitution of 1870 was replaced recently and the Lieutenant Governor does not become the “Acting Governor” whenever the Governor is absent for a day or two.

    @Raunerbot:

If you can’t see the dopieness in what she said then you truly are a Raunerbot. Open your eyes and get out from under the spell.

  114. - low level - Wednesday, Jun 18, 14 @ 9:26 am:

Someone above mentioned term limits and another mentioned Madigan. What does Evelyn’s incompetence and lack of understanding have to do with either of those two things?

As for the Raunerbots, I prefer to call you Raunerians because it truly seems like you are from a different planet with you alien like “yes, oh great leader” view of Bruce. Planet Rauner.
