Salvi claims lead

Friday, Mar 3, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

You can read the Salvi campaign poll summary here (pdf file), but the Northwest Herald also has the exclusive.

GOP candidate Kathy Salvi has opened up a double-digit lead over her opponents in the 8th Congressional District primary, according to poll numbers obtained by the Northwest Herald.

Her main rival, David McSweeney, challenged the accuracy of the poll, which was commissioned by the Salvi campaign.

In a survey of 300 likely Republican voters, 29 percent of respondents said they would vote for Salvi, while 19 percent said they’d vote for McSweeney. Thirty percent were undecided.

If the poll is accurate, it’s bad news for McSweeney, a Barrington Hills investment banker who has spent $1.5 million of his own money on the race, including a $500,000 loan made Thursday.

A December poll released by Salvi showed McSweeney at 20 percent, a point higher than this week’s poll.

“Obviously, his message is not resonating with voters, and Kathy’s positive message is,” said Jason Heffley, a Salvi spokesman.

Salvi has poured $739,000 of her own wealth into her campaign.

McSweeney’s campaign manager Jim Thacker called Salvi’s survey a “push poll,” one loaded with negative questions about a candidate to influence the outcome – a charge the pollster flatly denied.

McSweeney is going to dump another $500,000 of his own money into the race, a campaign source told me yesterday.

UPDATE: From McSweeney’s campaign:

“Further, the Salvi camp refuses to release the poll questions. We have two individuals who were polled by the Salvi camp who are willing to go on record. Both have said that the poll contained negative questions directed at Dave McSweeney. I think the Salvi camp is afraid that if the façade they have put up is revealed we will all see the real face of that campaign,” said Thacker.

My friends had a party when McSweeney got the Trib nomination. A GOP who votes for Salvi is basically voting for Bean in the general election. She’s the 8th’s version of Cegelis, i.e. can’t win a general election.

Is it still an exclusive if no other paper is going to publish a candidate’s poll?

An open letter to all political campaigns:

Please stop calling my house. I made the effort to get on the National Do Not Call List because I do not want to be disturbed at home by uninvited solicitors. While I realize that you have exempted yourselves from compliance with the do not call list, you should understand that your calls will cost you my vote. Your voluntary compliance would be politically expedient. If you call me, I will vote for your opponent. If you both call me, I will not vote the race. Any candidate, who is so insensitive or so pompous on this issue, certainly cannot be trusted to represent me in any government capacity. You can mail me your stuff. You can e-mail me your stuff. You can put your stuff on my TV. You can put your stuff on my radio. You can put your stuff in the newspaper. You can put your stuff on billboards. You can sky-write over the neighborhood if you want. I don’t care. Just please stop calling my house.

Paul, that’s life in a Democracy. Perhaps you could move somewhere else.

I agree with Paul, they are actually discouraging registering to vote, or declaring your party affiliation by bothering me. It’s like a punishment for being a good citizen and eventually it will cause some people to stop being part of the process if they cannot opt out of these pestering phone calls they will opt out of voting.

If it bothers you that much, just get caller ID and do not pick up the phone if a campaign is calling you.

    Dear the truth,
I believe it all!!! She is full of lies. I don’t trust anyone who thinks they can take care of six kids from Washington. She religiously had her kids, Stay home till they are grown!!!!!!!
