Get out the milk carton

Thursday, Jul 27, 2006

We had a story about alleged attorney general candidate Stu Umholtz’s fundraising on the blog earlier this week. The AP takes it a little further.

Who needs television ads when you have the DAR newsletter?

Heading into the heart of campaign season, Republican Stewart Umholtz lacks the money for commercials, staff or the other trappings of a traditional bid for Illinois attorney general. He had just $44,301 on hand as of June 30.

But Umholtz insists he has a strategy for victory, one that relies on reaching people through the Internet, being included in newspaper voting guides and even getting mentioned in newsletters from Daughters of the American Revolution, boating groups and other clubs.

“If I get a newsletter in the mail of a group I participate in, then I’m more likely to read that newsletter, perhaps cover to cover, than I am to read ads in a newspaper,” Umholtz said.

Words fail me.

It is difficult to find motivation to compete when you are outmuscled in every important area.

    Rich,
Please tell me the AP reporter left out the end of the interview, where Stu grins and then says, “But seriously”, and gives his real plan for election.
    Boating group newsletters!?

  3. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Jul 27, 06 @ 2:51 pm:

Stu is right. If he plays this correctly, he will be able to ride the DAR vote right into office.

Hey, if Blagojevich can sell out to the Nation of Islam, then Stu can pander to the DAR.

  4. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Jul 27, 06 @ 2:52 pm:

    Hey, I’m serious.
If he can bring in the Red Hat Society, AND combine it with the DAR, then watch out!

Leave the man alone. He is trying. My hat is off to him. Go Stu go.

    Man vs. The Machine

    GO, STU, GO!!!

  9. - colt 45 - Thursday, Jul 27, 06 @ 3:51 pm:

we bemoan the fact that political machines exist in illinois. we point and yell and scream at nepotism and cronyism and annointings of children of machine politicians to follow in their powerful parent’s footsteps. we bemoan the fact that it’s hard to find qualified candidates to run against the machines. and yet, some make fun of a qualified candidate who put his name on a statewide ballot and is sincerely trying out there. is it because he can’t seem to organize and gain any traction against a well-financed, highly organized machine? well? what’s it gonna be? i agree with hack. leave the guy alone. he is trying. my hat is off to him. go stu go.

  10. - CrunchyCon - Thursday, Jul 27, 06 @ 5:20 pm:

    Well said, Colt 45.
I was sincere in my support of Stu. He is a well-qualified candidate and has run an honourable campaign. As for campaign contributions, Stu can hold his head high. He does not appear to be accepting and keeping large contributions from the likes of Tom Lakin and John Burgess.

You can tell a lot about a person by the company he or she keeps.

  11. - NW burbs - Thursday, Jul 27, 06 @ 5:33 pm:

Well most involved in politics know the Republicans are microtargeting swing voters these days but this takes the cake.

Say, maybe there’s a baking club he could send a recipe to… What sort of recipe would it be?

Could it be a recipe for disaster?

  12. - Go Little Guys - Thursday, Jul 27, 06 @ 5:44 pm:

Yo, Colt&Crunch, you got it. Double standard.

Umholtz sucks it up against long odds and puts himself out there. He can’t find two nickels to rub together and that somehow makes him a wimp?

Same with Rich Whitney. He turns in eight times as many signatures as Blago and JBT and he’s standing up to MJM’s Orkin Men and he’s a whiner??? Give me a break.

I admire their courage. May the little guys/gals yet triumph.

  13. - paddyrollingstone - Thursday, Jul 27, 06 @ 6:19 pm:

That sounds right out of the Onion. He is courting the all-important Wasp, dickey-wearing, spats-sporting, diamond stickpin toting voters. There has to be a lot of them.

  14. - jaundiced eye - Thursday, Jul 27, 06 @ 9:17 pm:

Don’t knock Stu … he’s a vegetarian, a constituency that is growing on a consistent basis.

  15. - Disgusted - Thursday, Jul 27, 06 @ 9:49 pm:

“And the meek shall inherit the earth.”

Got a website, Stu? I’d like to contribute to a man who has the courage of his convictions, instead of trying to get out of his convictions. Take the high road, man.

  16. - Six Degrees of Separation - Friday, Jul 28, 06 @ 12:21 am:

Cassandra, did you leave out “…with over 60,000 worthless, overpaid, blood-sucking, bloated-pension earning so-and-so’s who never worked a day in their life.” by mistake?
