We had a story about alleged attorney general candidate Stu Umholtz’s fundraising on the blog earlier this week. The AP takes it a little further.
Who needs television ads when you have the DAR newsletter?
Heading into the heart of campaign season, Republican Stewart Umholtz lacks the money for commercials, staff or the other trappings of a traditional bid for Illinois attorney general. He had just $44,301 on hand as of June 30.
But Umholtz insists he has a strategy for victory, one that relies on reaching people through the Internet, being included in newspaper voting guides and even getting mentioned in newsletters from Daughters of the American Revolution, boating groups and other clubs.
“If I get a newsletter in the mail of a group I participate in, then I’m more likely to read that newsletter, perhaps cover to cover, than I am to read ads in a newspaper,” Umholtz said.
Words fail me.

we bemoan the fact that political machines exist in illinois. we point and yell and scream at nepotism and cronyism and annointings of children of machine politicians to follow in their powerful parent’s footsteps. we bemoan the fact that it’s hard to find qualified candidates to run against the machines. and yet, some make fun of a qualified candidate who put his name on a statewide ballot and is sincerely trying out there. is it because he can’t seem to organize and gain any traction against a well-financed, highly organized machine? well? what’s it gonna be? i agree with hack. leave the guy alone. he is trying. my hat is off to him. go stu go.

I was sincere in my support of Stu. He is a well-qualified candidate and has run an honourable campaign. As for campaign contributions, Stu can hold his head high. He does not appear to be accepting and keeping large contributions from the likes of Tom Lakin and John Burgess.
You can tell a lot about a person by the company he or she keeps.

Well most involved in politics know the Republicans are microtargeting swing voters these days but this takes the cake.
Say, maybe there’s a baking club he could send a recipe to… What sort of recipe would it be?

Umholtz sucks it up against long odds and puts himself out there. He can’t find two nickels to rub together and that somehow makes him a wimp?
Same with Rich Whitney. He turns in eight times as many signatures as Blago and JBT and he’s standing up to MJM’s Orkin Men and he’s a whiner??? Give me a break.
I admire their courage. May the little guys/gals yet triumph.
