Guv goes back to positive spots

Friday, Aug 25, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

The traditional campaign cycle is essentially beginning - start positive, go negative, finish positive.

Team Blago is back on the air this week with another flight of ads. The buy started Wednesday, August 23rd and runs at least through Monday the 28th. In placement it appears much like the waves of ads they ran in April, May, and June before taking most of July and August off: heavy on news and public affairs with a few prime time spots thrown in for good measure.

But these spots are 30 seconds long, and are not bookended. These also seemed intended to prod his positives upward, touting his role in the Amber Alert system, rather than just drive his opponents’ lower.

And there are a lot of them. He’s spending $400K in Chicago for this buy, and it’s only 6 days long – that’s $65K a day on TV spots.

There are actually two new TV ads. “Amber Alert” and “Ethanol

What do you think?

UPDATE: If he wants to help kids, maybe he should’ve had a talk a while back with one of his biggest supporters.

CHICAGO (Aug. 23, 2006) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Justice have reached an agreement with A. Finkl & Sons Co. on alleged clean-air violations at the company’s steel forging plant, 2011 N. Southport Ave., Chicago. The company agreed to do two environmental projects totaling $620,000, to pay a $75,000 penalty and to comply with the Clean Air Act. […]

The agreement resolves EPA allegations that Finkl violated performance standards for new sources of air pollution by making equipment modifications that caused an increase in particulate (smoke, dust, ash) emissions and by not getting permits that would have required better controls. […]

Inhaling high concentrations of particulates can affect children, the elderly and people with heart and lung diseases the most.

Positive-negative-positive, eh? You think he is going positive from here on out??? I doubt it. The ads are alright. I don’t know how the ethanol buy will help him in Chicago. Maybe he should consider a big ethanol ad buy downstate. Oy…

  2. - Sine Die - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 2:51 pm:

I saw the ethanol ad this moring during a local news break. While well-done, the ad left me wondering what its real message was intended to be. Is Rod going to solve the energy crisis or will this ad be part of an anti-Bush series? Looks like the latter to me-we will be seeing more of Rod running against Bush and Rove and not so much against Judy.

  3. - Rich Miller - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 2:52 pm:

LL, you misunderstood. The P-N-P cycle is likely starting now.

  4. - Lovie's Leather - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 2:54 pm:

gotcha… well then he started negative, then positive, negative, then positive again.

  5. - Little Egypt - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 2:56 pm:

The bookended ads absolutely gauled me. If I were companies with ads running in the middle of this idiots two negative ads that went something like “What was she……”, I would have called and complained to the TV/radio station I paid my money to. My mute button never got such a workout as when those ads came on. And quite honestly, I would mute ads for anyone who came out with such negative, conniving ads. Go for it Elvis. Spend that money like there’s no tomorrow. There likely will be no tomorrow for you.

Looks like the beginning of the end for jbt. the ads are well done and the issues resonate with the people who view them. i personally love the newest george bush ad posted in comments in the other thread. i knew once i saw this clip on the news that blago’s pros in the media room would make a great ad out of it. she looks quite foolish — and thats tough while standing next to george bush!

  12. - Anonymous - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 3:41 pm:

A refreshing counter to Topinka’s non-stop nastiness. Isn’t everyone sick of her yet?

  13. - Little Egypt - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 4:21 pm:

Not near as sick of Topinka as I am Blablabbovich

  14. - Buck Flagojevich - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 4:46 pm:

The “Amber Alert” spot is a joke. When I saw it I couldn’t believe the absurdity of it. The voice over makes it seem as if Gov. Putz actually went out and found the missing children on his own. Then again, Blago’s lips were moving, so you know it’s all crapola.

I’m more sick of Blago’s ads. I almost tossed a $80 bottle of scotch at the TV when I saw it. But I quickly came to my senses. (regarding the scotch not Blago)

  15. - Shelter From The Storm - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 4:47 pm:

Little Egypt — Weren’t you the one complaining about the comments section turning to the tides of hackery and partisanship? Way to turn the dial up to 11 on that one.

And unlike you, the rest of us who live in reality don’t believe there “will likely be no tomorrow” for Blagojevich.

  16. - VanillaMan - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 4:59 pm:

He has worn out his welcome. These ads will not work. There are no apologies in them. He is not saying that he blew it. Fool me once, shame on you - fool me twice, shame on me.

    He’s a goner.

  17. - Squideshi - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 5:16 pm:

Meanwhile, people like James Anderson, over at the Illinois Radio Network are so afraid that Blagojevich will withdraw from a debate if Rich Whitney is invited, that they’re allowing the media to be manipulated and simply excluding Whitney!

Anderson says he’s running a “business” and has no obligation to invite Whitney. He’s more concerned about loosing a debate for his affiliates. Sure makes a good case for the corporate-owned, for profit-media, don’t it?

There is somthing to be said for having the candidate speak directly into the camera. The Blago camp put together two great ads.

  22. - Laughing - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 6:45 pm:

He’s gone positive because his wife is now blasting the media for supposedly making the little baby girl cry.

Hey, did you know that the Illinois Hospital Association keeps contributing money to Rod Blagojevich even though he’s got a campaign war chest full of money to burn? The IHA has also come under fire from Democrat Lisa Madigan over the hospital billing/charity care issue (Madigan wants to tie the tax exemption that non-profit hospitals enjoy to some type of accountability standard related to charity care).

Wonder if he’s done any arm-twisting to get more money from the hospital association? I mean, he’s got plenty, so why do they keep donating more? They’ve donated pretty close to the kickoff of the fall election season.

Sounds intriguing. Wonder if there’s a pay-to-play story there?

  23. - GetaGrip - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 7:04 pm:

Yes, its probably over for JBT, but it will be nice to see Blago get what’s coming to him in his second term… Jail.

I love it… He calls JBT’s plan a fraud. Everything thing this guy has done is a fraud (All Kids, IsaveRx) and he is going to go down because of it. Joe Cini, Dawn Defrates, Brad Tusk and all his current and past patronage chiefs (Personnel Officers) will have to tell all or go to jail… Good luck guys, Lying to the Feds is not that easy. They are real good at seeing, spotting and getting to the truth.

I await the response that everything Rod has done is nothing more than the Republicans did for years so its o.k. Guess what… It was illegal then and still is. So quit making the excuse that its o.k. because its not.

  24. - Anonymous - Friday, Aug 25, 06 @ 7:10 pm:

Rod is going to win for many reasons. Perhaps the main reason is his opponent. Good luck in retirement Judy. Don’t worry. The state will find a way to keep your pension checks coming.

Shelter from the Storm: You think you are living in reality? Don’t you read the papers or see or hear the news? The man comes up with more ideas than B & R has ice cream flavors and most of them are unfunded and won’t work. He has spent untold millions on All Kids and is spending millions more and STILL no sure way to fund it and no SURE way to get doctors to take its participants. He is now trying to remedy that situation by sending out a letter to doctors telling them he will pay their overdue Medicaid bills if they will support All Kids. How’s that for a kick in the fact for all the other health care providers he is stiffing. Maybe he would be more believable if his face and name weren’t the most prominent thing on the All Kids handouts.

If you don’t believe what most of the newspapers and other types of media around the state have dug up and FOIA-ed on the governor, that is your perogative. However, from someone on the front lines of interaction with his constant demands, egotism and rape of the Illinois taxpayers, you may want to stay better informed. His governership is a disaster and will cost us terribly in the end.

I have been in Law Enforcement for 19 years,,,,Blago had about as much to do with the Amber alert as I did the inventing of the internet,,,oh Sorry that was Gore! I can’t believe we hear these lies lies lies and the media gives him a pass, without questions……SHAME ON ALL OF US!!!

  32. - Faithful Reader - Saturday, Aug 26, 06 @ 8:49 am:

It seems entirely appropriate for Governor Blagojevich to do an advertisement called “Amber Alert,” as by and large he has been “missing” and we’ve been “exploited” since he took office. Let’s face it: We have the only Gov in the nation whose picture could rightly appear on milk cartons in our capitol city!

  33. - HOPE FOR JUDY BARR - Saturday, Aug 26, 06 @ 10:15 am:

My wife who is a teacher just told me about the bookmarks they got pushing ALL KIDS and would you believe it , it also has GOV RODS name on it also, I thought you could’t do that. Also remember he said he was getting 500 State Police Squad cars, well guess what only 290 got delivered, they say is is a supply disrupption, we hear they didn’t pay FORD.The STATE POLICE UNION FOP (rank and file this time) voted not to endorse a gov canidate this time( strange that the union hasn’t made that annoucement yet) after last time only the executive board made that decision on their own , and yes because of that the FOP got the best union contract ever,20% over 4 years, and then the non union(command) was told we don’t have any money for you,and guess what , most union officers want nothing to do with a promotion, in some DISTRICTs only 1 or 2 people took the test , who is going to run the show in years to come, whats Blago care, he won’t be here when S*** hits the fan.

Once again, seeing all the state workers on here bashing Blago, I know he must be doing something right.

If working for the state is so bad, stop whining and go get a different job. Voters have no sympathy. They have their own problems, and more demanding jobs that don’t allow time to blog gripes.
