Rezko updates

Friday, Oct 20, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Sun-Times:

A federal judge did add a new accessory to the natty, gray pinstriped suit Rezko wore on Thursday — an electronic ankle bracelet.

Rezko was put under house arrest, at least until he provides a detailed financial affidavit in two weeks. Prosecutors made it clear they wanted more financial information, noting Rezko transferred $400,000 last year to a Lebanon bank.

Prosecutors asked for a hefty bond, saying Rezko would have an incentive to flee once he realizes the strength of the case against him.

In the one case alone, he’s facing 14 years. The feds have Rezko on tape and others on tape talking about him, in secretly made recording

* Tribune:

Levine is cooperating with the government, and Niewoehner said there are recordings of Rezko discussing his activities.

“Mr. Rezko has no idea what is in store for him,” Niewoehner said.

[Emphasis added.]

* Copley: Rezko “has a negative cash flow” and may have less than $5,000 in the bank, Duffy said.

* Daily Herald:

“In the last week, there has been what I’ll call an unnecessary media frenzy about Mr. Rezko and his whereabouts and his intentions. Many members of the media have been quoting sources saying Mr. Rezko would never come back,” Duffy said. “I hope, today, by Mr. Rezko’s voluntary return to the United States, will put to rest all this wild speculation.

“He is confident that he will be vindicated at trial,” Duffy said. “Please, please honor the presumption of innocence.”

It’ll be interesting to see if Tony rolls, and if so, how quickly.

  2. - VanillaMan - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:19 am:

Mr. Rezko isn’t stupid. He’s just another crooked friend of Blagojevich. So naturally, he has stashed his cash so it cannot be found. Mr. Rezko doesn’t need Mr. Blagojevich anymore. So he will probably make the best deal he can with the prosecution, and give them enough to nail Blagojevich. After Mr. Rezko has done his service, then he can return to his stashed millions in Lebannon and Syria, or Liechtenstein or Switzerland, and live very comfortably.

  3. - Guy Fawkes - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 9:44 am:

How long has Joseph Duffy been his attorney?
If Rezko has this so-called negative cash flow, is Duffy defending this guy pro bono.
If Duffy’s relationship has been a lengthy one with Big Tony, one wonders if feds have his conversations on tape.

“Niewoehner said there are recordings of Rezko discussing his activities.”

Gov. Corruptovich will find the tapes as sticky as Nixon did!

  5. - Garp - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:14 am:

I was amused to hear an paid announcement on WBBM that Papa Johns Pizza is having a seminar on how to buy their franchises. This was yesterday, an hour before Resco was supposed to be in court.
    A strange coincidence

  6. - G Gordon Liddy - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:25 am:

    Bill,

You gotta get in there and get those tapes. How hard can it be to break into Fitz’s office?

Let’s see… you’ll need a good crew. Get Monk and Tusk and Chris Kelly…, no better not take Kelly, or you’ll have to go back in and get those tapes. You’ll need some gray jumpsuits with names sewn on them. (NOT YOUR REAL NAMES!!!) You’ll need plumbers equipment, can of spray paint for the cameras, fake mustaches, some duct tape and a box of Twinkies. That should do it.

Good luck and we never had this conversation.

    G

  7. - Cassandra - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 10:37 am:

Depends on one’s definition of “in the bank” as opposed to “in the mutual fund” or “in the real estate.”

I only have about $5000 in the bank myself, the rest of it is working somewhere. As it should be.

  8. - Wumpus Diva - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 11:21 am:

Is this Rezko mess the whole cause of the Papa John/Papa Tony Split? I am sure he has plenty of assets in Syria and they would be more than willing to share that info with the US.

  9. - DOWNSTATE - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 11:26 am:

Let’s see and G. Ryan said right before his trial uummmm I forgot but it was a pretty good statement of innocence.

  10. - Animous - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 11:55 am:

    G: Good Stuff man, hilarious!!!!

NOTE TO GOV: It’s not the crime that will do you in, it’s the COVER UP…oops, too late.

G - I’m still laughing. That was GREAT!!!!!!

  13. - United Illinois Tollway Workers - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 1:52 pm:

They’ve had massive influence at the Illinois Tollway too. Sure hope they connect the dots with the others Blagojevich, Kelly & Cellini.

Did Blagocrook help bail his buddy out?

  16. - HogsInWiscosnin - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 4:01 pm:

Funny, Hurtgen’s case keeps getting delayed and more and more indictments keep coming. Moreover, they keep slowly creeping their way northward to the Wisconsin line. Rezko, Kelly and Hurtgen all had dinner with top officials in the Wisconsin Gov.s office jsut before indcitments started to fly. Also Hurtgen, Rezko and the Wisconsin Gov. all went to a Packer-Bear football game. Wisconsin might become the new Illinois thanks to Hurtgen and Rezko!

  18. - Arthur Andersen - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 4:30 pm:

Hey Cassandra, the feds aren’t stupid. If Papa Tony had any real estate “at work” with any apparent equity in it, they would have asked for it first. He didn’t, so they couldn’t. Instead, they “ankled him up” until a full assessment of his finances can be completed.

  19. - Fly on the Wall - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 5:16 pm:

Tip of the Iceberg…… This web Blagojevich and his goons have weaved is going to make George Ryan look like boy scout.
    Waitin’ see!

  20. - Mike Williams - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 5:21 pm:

G: great idea, but leave Tusk out of it. Replace him with Becky or Abby. That way, when they get caught, you’ll have a spokesperson handy to blame it all on the media or the Republicans or disgruntled staffers or mid level bureaucrats or those not committed to the new way.

  21. - zatoichi - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 5:21 pm:

How fast do these guys blow through money? Must be many more dollars with Brothers Construction in Costa Rica. Seems their basic idea is screw over everyone and sleaze your way through life. And people fall for these guys again and again. I get nervous making personal copies at work.

  22. - Citizen A - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 5:31 pm:

And well you should, those digital copiers keep copies in files stored inside. Nothing is secret when it comes to the digital world.

  23. - Angie - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 6:00 pm:

I cannot believe that some of these losers are lawyers. It makes absolutely no sense, whatsoever. Gee, I wanna be a crook…so I’m going to bust my tail for three years of law school! ????

As for whoever still plans to vote for Blagojevich again, I’ve got one thing to say: The clue phone is ringing, folks, and it’s for you. Pick that puppy up already.

  24. - Toxman - Friday, Oct 20, 06 @ 7:12 pm:

So Rezko has no $$$ and he drives away in an $80,000 vehicle. Again, these people never cease to amaze me. Don’t watch what we do, just believe what we say….

  25. - Lou Nova - Saturday, Oct 21, 06 @ 12:27 am:

If you think the Tony Rezko thing is big just wait till the CK1 thing explodes.

  26. - Lovie's Leather - Saturday, Oct 21, 06 @ 1:53 am:

I know, Tony, it must be so tough to pay the bills when you own 20-some properties. Poor guy… must be tough….

    G: hilarious stuff!!!

What happened to innocent until proven guilty… Are we in the US or the USSR circa 1985.. Thank god there is a legal remedy.. Defamation… Moreover, defamation per se…

To all of those so quick to judge, What have you done for your state lately??? Those casting judgment, What sacrifices have you made for this great State… How much?? For what?? and Why have you suffered??? Take a second look before you judge the individuals that which you judge… Assess their sacrifices, would you do the same??? How can you be so cruel???? I wish I lived in Cali

  30. - FYI - Saturday, Oct 21, 06 @ 4:14 am:

    girlfriend…???

  31. - Angie - Saturday, Oct 21, 06 @ 9:58 am:

“Thank god there is a legal remedy.. Defamation… Moreover, defamation per se…”

Rod is a public figure and has the feds crawling all over his administration. Good luck with a defamation claim. What damages could he prove? His poll #’s are up if you believe what you’ve been reading.

As far as what some of us have done for our state, we’ve actually bothered to vote and keep up with what’s going on, unlike the morons who get their info from quick, slickly-manufactured, audience-tested-before-the-fact soundbites.

  32. - NoGiftsPlease - Saturday, Oct 21, 06 @ 5:03 pm:

Have you seen the ad for Blago “paid for by friends of Rod Blagojevich?” JBT could have some fun with that one, make a parallel ad but scroll the list of friends’ names with the amount they contributed to his campaign and what they seemed to get out of it ($ amount of state contracts, salary of job, or seat on what board, or if indicted, show that, too). It would be hilarious.
