New Blagojevich radio ads

Friday, Nov 3, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

Well, so much for getting out of here this morning so I could meet some of the fellas in Chicago for a long lunch at Gene’s.

We have two new radio ads from the Blagojevich campaign. The first is negative…

“You know how she’s going to pay for it? Taxing me, taxing you. Taxes, taxes, taxes.”

Click here to play [mp3 file]

The second is positive…

“I’m sticking with the governor. He’ll get things done.”

Click here to play [mp3 file]

Very authentic sounding ads.

I wonder if these ads were paid for with money that Rezko helped funnel into Blago’s campaign fund.

  2. - VanillaMan - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 2:21 pm:

I loved the “paid for by Friends of Blagojevich”! I hear that his best friend is $50 million in debt! I guess he bought a lot of those stupid radio ads!

As to the ads, I think Rod has been hanging with the old ladies too long. The same old hag speaks in both ads, so obviously she’s not Grandma Moses sitting in Petersburg, as she claims.

He won his House seat playing off his name, and he does it again. Like his little black girl joke, this one has worn out it’s welcome. Yeah, Rod, NO ONE can pronouce your name - we’re too stupid! Save us from ourselves!

Finally, he is running on the “I didn’t raise your taxes” claim. The voices mention all these deliriously fabulous social programs that came FREE in every box of Bla - blagg - bragonowich!

I don’t think the governor listens to radio, or he would know that listeners weren’t as dumb as he thinks we are.

  3. - Just Saying - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 2:26 pm:

    A working class guy? Please!

  4. - Down South - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 2:41 pm:

Talk all the smack you want to V-Man but you know he will get 4 more years in office. As far as his Ad’s 98% of them are right on the money and will work to his good.

  5. - SouthernLaborer - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 2:55 pm:

These ads are the best so far this race. JBT only wishes she had a record like this to run on!!! Im with Down South…Everybody knows Rod has 4 more years!!!

  6. - Angie - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 3:00 pm:

Boy, if JBT had Tony doing her shakedo–oops!!! naughty naughty naughty–(cough) fundraising (snicker) for her, she’d have thousands of ads running, too!

Best BS that money can buy, Rod?

  7. - Yowza - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 3:47 pm:

Wow. GREAT RADIO AD. People on here can complain all they want, but the governor has dont great things - minimum wage, all kids, education funding. Bottom line is that ads are right on the money.

All of Blagos ads use Topinkas own words against her. He cant help it that she is her own worst enemy.

Heres to 4 more years of Democratic leadership.

BTW, I also LOVE his new positive TV ad.

  8. - Belle - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 3:50 pm:

What good is winning if you are in jail?

  9. - Shelter From The Storm - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 3:51 pm:

The positive ad is fantastic, love or hate Rod.

So keep yappin’ about Rezko, rather than about this post about his radio ads. But the truth is he’s going to win.

  10. - Bridget Dooley - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 4:28 pm:

I agree, these ads are good. Really good. Especially the positive one.

Say what you want about his record. You cannot deny that he has one damn good media consultant. Anyone know who it is?

  11. - Anon - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 5:04 pm:

That’s not Grandma Moses talking in the ad. That’s Shirley McCombs, and yes, she does live in Petersburg.

  12. - Budget Watcher - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 5:47 pm:

It’s looking more and more like 12-18 more months for the Governor. You have to wonder how he’ll govern given the impending legal problems he’s going to face. Has Quinn begun work yet on his transition team?

  13. - Dead Pappa Hallas - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 6:04 pm:

The sad thing is, it takes thirty seconds to paly these lies over the air, but it would take twenty minutes to go thru them point by point and explain how the claims in them are lies or exaggerations or tremendous taffy-stretches out of context. Only radio talk show hosts seem to have that kind of time, if they care to take it. Or newspaper columnists, but the radio hosts are not likely to slam or de-construct ads their own sales staff put on the air, and the people that heard the spots on the radio are less than likely to read the truth squad reports in the paper. So that leaves escalating negative ads as the only answer that works. That’s sad.

  14. - So Blue Democrat - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 6:32 pm:

All this talk about 4 more years, do you mean upcoming jail time?

  15. - Disgusted - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 7:46 pm:

To all your touters of the governor’s wonderful programs that are going to transform our lives, I have two words for you - revenue stream???

  16. - Restless - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 8:27 pm:

Maybe someone will be able to answer my question. About a week ago Thursday night, Secretary of State Jesse White had a fundraiser for his 27th ward organization at a restaurant in his ward in Chicago . Employees of the Secretary of State’s office were encouraged to attend and were surprised to see a ledger of SOS employees at the door. If someone was an employee of the office, their name was “checked” on the list. What does this mean? Isn’t this what Governor Blagojevich said he would end?

  17. - Citizen A - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 8:56 pm:

You must be talking about Blagojevich’s Secretary of State, Jesse White.

  18. - Roomie - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 9:22 pm:

I love it how Topinka criticizes the governor for negative ads, yet what does she do today?

Debut a NEW NEGATIVE AD against the governor.

I may be wrong, but hasnt her campaign run more negative ads than positive? I can think of only two positive commercials she even aired!

Wake up people. She claims that she has been “pounded” non-stop by negative ad, but we all know if people actually believed in her by donating money she would have been doing the same thing. Sour grapes.

  19. - You Like? - Friday, Nov 3, 06 @ 10:56 pm:

While I agree with Roomie, and while this whole discussion about Rod vs. Judy has been fun for the past 7 months or so, the reality is that it will be over on Tuesday. Rod will be governor and Judy will be a gracious loser who moves her chair forward when Alexi comes in to measure the drapes in the Treasurers office.

So many have talked about what a nice woman she is, but I distinctly remember a very nasty woman giving a speech on primary election night where whe promised to “take Rod out.” She is not the nice, quirky woman that some of you think you know. She is a not ready for prime time player who was forced t orun a race whe didnt want to and who will be sent to an early retirement. As for Rod’s negative ads, he has, for the most part, used her own words against her. She gave him more ammo than any candidate could ever wish for.

    Enjoy your retirement Madam Treasurer.

  20. - Disgusted - Saturday, Nov 4, 06 @ 5:29 am:

Retirement??? If she doesn’t win, the nature of Illinois politics will ensure that she gets a nice, high salary corporate job somewhere in Chicagoland.
That’s the normal turn of events. Then she can use her knowledge of state government to her employer’s advantage to fleece state government with over-priced services and commodities.

  21. - Bill - Saturday, Nov 4, 06 @ 5:35 am:

    Excellent ads!
Once again the rod haters are reduced to snide remarks about jail time and convictions because they can’t argue with the peoples agenda of raising the minimum wage, universal health care, pre-school and increasing funding for education all without raising taxes, taxes, taxes!!!
Judy is looking more morose and pathetic as the election day approaches. I almost feel sorry for her. She should have never let Edgar talk her into running against the big blue machine. She could have served out another term as a do nothing treasurer doling out her no bid contracts and fattening her campaign fund with contributions from banks that do business with the state.
But NOOOOOOOOOO! She had to prove once again that the Peter Principle applies to politics too.
4 more days then 4 MORE YEARS.
It is too late now to bring it on.
P.S. Rod also has some excellent radio ads on WVON in Chicago. R-O-D for G-O-V…

  22. - Budget Watcher - Saturday, Nov 4, 06 @ 8:35 am:

    Bill,
Contrary to what you may think, I actually embrace some of the of the progressive agenda items you cite. I nevertheless have some very real concerns about the state government’s ability to advance this agenda, both from a financial perspective and from a competency perspective. There has been an alarming degeneration on both fronts in the last 5 years, especially on the level of competency.

However, my greatest concern is with the ‘leader’ it appears we’re going to select to promote these ideas. Bill, this guy is up to his eye-balls in sleaze, and unless he was an absolute moron, he was certainly complicit, and perhaps worse, in some highly illegal schemes. If the truth will set you free, as he claims, then he should release the subpeanas, and then we don’t have to speculate on the likelihood of convictions and jail time.

In short, I don’t believe in rewarding a corrupt, political opportunist with another term.

  23. - Truth - Saturday, Nov 4, 06 @ 10:06 am:

These ads don’t talk about all the issues. Character and corruption are also issues on which Rod falls short. If he’s reelected, we all lose, except Bill.

  24. - Disgusted - Saturday, Nov 4, 06 @ 11:20 am:

Bill, you really take the cake. Please, please, tell us how the governor is going to pay for all this largesse that he plans. You have yet to address that question despite it being asked of you numerous times. We are up to our eyeballs in debt, we’re at the bottom of the heap stateswise and still he pushes spending money. I bet his wife pays the household bills because he acts like he doesn’t know what things cost.

And, by the way, his ad about JBT wanting to help illegals as mentioned in a letter to the editor in today’s Trib - guess who had a flyer sent out in Spanish and English within the last month, to illegals, that states that if they want to participate in state services, the state will NOT report them to INS. So just who’s helping illegals here, huh, Mr. Bill???????

  25. - Disgusted - Saturday, Nov 4, 06 @ 11:23 am:

And, by the way, Bill, unpaid pension fund debt and unpaid health provider bills are still out there and are still debts, despite the so-called balanced budget. I also note that in today’s Trib., the governor says he’s going to raid dedicated funds AGAIN and cut state staff AGAIN to meet obligations. Sooner or later , both are going to run out and since Rezko is 50 million in debt, the governor will have no one to go to for financial contributions. It’s a house of cards, Bill.

  26. - Truthful James - Saturday, Nov 4, 06 @ 11:37 am:

If Tony R is $50 Million in debt, it just means he is between government deals. Hold onto your wallets, Illinois people, he will make it up in the new year. Along with Thompson, K-J and Cellini on the other side…why do you think the programmed JudyB for defeat?

  27. - So Blue Democrat - Saturday, Nov 4, 06 @ 12:25 pm:

    You Like & Bill,

Rod’s retirement will also emerge in time. Of course, his will be in a jail cell.

  28. - desperate - Saturday, Nov 4, 06 @ 12:41 pm:

This is FAR from over-> to the die hard liberals who think it is. These ads are more of the same garbage (and I mean garbage)! Anybody who believes the crap coming out of these ads is either totally naive or ignorant as hell. The State is running on empty (believe me, I know- I’m a long time state employee at a very UNDER staffed agency) and it’ws just a matter of time before the house of cards tumbles. especially inregads to state pensions. We can only hop ethat Blago gets indicted as any change would be wonderful at this point (including Pat Quinn)! Lisa Madigan knows he’s corrupt and is just waiting in line to run next term. Go Mike $ Lisa!

  29. - Angie - Sunday, Nov 5, 06 @ 7:03 pm:

That’s the thing with AG Madigan. I just cannot see Rod working with her if he gets to stay in office. JBT, I can see working together with lots of people, but Rod? He is at odds with the AG from his OWN party.

He calls people “sexist” for questioning the business dealings of the Mrs., but yet Mr. Testicular Virility won’t comply with the lady AG’s request on those subpoenas? This guy is a loser, whether in or out of office.

Thank God that no matter what happens on Tuesday, Fitz is in town with “Operation Board Game” going on. We all win just having Fitz on the case, that’s for sure.

Happy nutty election day, everyone. Don’t get into any road rage incidents over the political bumper stickers, or anything. Life will still go on (chuckle).

  30. - JakeCP - Monday, Nov 6, 06 @ 11:24 pm:

I heard about that ad where kids were spelling R-O-D for G-O-V. Well tell them to spell B-L-A-G-O-J-E-V-I-C-H E-Q-U-A-L-S C-R-I-M-I-N-A-L
