This just in… Governor’s inauguration events

Monday, Dec 18, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

The governor’s office just released the inauguration schedule.

Inter-Faith Prayer Service: 9:30 a.m.–10:15 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield, located at 7th and Capitol Streets. The Governor and First Family will join other Constitutional Officers for an interfaith service, during which the Constitutional Party will light the Unity Candle.

Inaugural Ceremony: 11:00 a.m.–12:55 p.m. (doors will open at 9:00 a.m.) at the Prairie Capitol Convention Center in Springfield. More than 5,000 attendees will watch as the Governor and Constitutional Officers take the Oath of Office.

Executive Mansion Receiving Line: 2:30 p.m.–4:00 p.m. at the Executive Mansion in Springfield. The Governor will be joined by Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn in greeting the public at the Executive Mansion.

Celebrate! Illinois 2007 Inaugural Ball: 7:30 p.m.–11:30 p.m. at the Exposition Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. The Governor, First Lady and Constitutional Officers will take part in the ball, which is an Inaugural tradition.

You can find out more info and purchase a limited number of tickets at a special website set up for the occasion, Celebrate Illinois.

What inaugural events would you like to see? Snark encouraged.

  1. - RickG - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 10:21 am:

I’d like a count of how many people in the Governors’ Mansion receiving line will say,

“Hey, good to see ya. Coming back any time soon?”

  2. - Cal Skinner - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 10:39 am:

So, when does the public get to see the names and amounts of the contributors?

  3. - Tessa - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 11:05 am:

What would I like to see? Fitzgerald walking through the receiving line at the Executive Mansion to give the Governor the paperwork explaining in detail what he is being charged with in federal court. Then Blago being led away in handcuffs.

That’s what I would like to see.

  4. - OneMan - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 11:13 am:

The reception lines will be broken up as
    wire, no-wire.

  5. - anon #1 - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 11:20 am:

    Inter-Faith Prayer Service: 9:30 a.m.–10:15 a.m. at
Blago (in silence)….” Please Lord; don’t let Fitzgerald find any real evidence to indict me, at least not for 4 more years. I promise to do good from now on (fingers crossed behind his back).”

  6. - Bubs - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 11:45 am:

I’m amazed - they expect him to find Springfield?

  7. - Lovie's Leather - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 11:53 am:

The pay-to-play polka, everyone that gave or wants to give Blago contributions in exchange for jobs does the chicken dance while writing as many $1500 checks as possible. And when the song is over, the winner (the one who writes the most checks while doing the chicken dance) wins the state contract of their choice.

I would like to see the prayer service but only from a distance just in case lightning strikes. Although, I agree with Tess, that watching him and his wife receive Federal arrest warrents would be extremely satisfying.

  9. - Emily Post - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 12:50 pm:

    Dear Governor and Mrs. Blagojevich,

In order to ensure proper etiquette is followed at all of your inaugural functions, first and foremost, I would suggest to you that the first event of the day is a prayer service and not a wedding. It is most inappropriate to ask the constitutional office holders to light a unity candle at a prayer service. This, sir, is a function commpletely reserved for weddings. I’m sure you know the difference. However, if you are unsure about proper etiquette for your other events, feel free to contact me personally at www.howtomakeasilkpurseoutofBlagojevichsear.com. I will be waiting to hear from you or any member of your staff.

    Sincerely, Emily Post

  10. - Pat Collins - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 12:53 pm:

Maybe that is the way to get him to Springfield more often - throw parties when he comes!

  11. - Party on Wayne - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 1:04 pm:

They missed 6 PM: line of people giving the governor’s daughters “birthday gifts”, yeah, that’s it.

Bring your cameras to the mansion; you may never get another chance to see the governor in this non-native habitat.

  12. - Establishment Republican - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 1:34 pm:

I would like to see an emotional rendition of the Bette Midler classic “Wind Beneath My Wings” sung to the Governor by “Bill.”

  13. - Rich Miller - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 1:37 pm:

I hope Bill gets a chance to attend

  14. - Angie - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 2:49 pm:

They should play a game called Indictment Ball where they grab lightweight (read: small) teflon-coated pans with which to bat around a ping pong ball with a giant “I” for Indictment on it.

Everyone gets a “paddle” and has to play…especially Rod.

  15. - Bill - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 3:13 pm:

    Rich,
Ill be there. Who needs two?

  16. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 4:18 pm:

At the rate the State is going, the power will be turned off and the “Unity Candle” will be the only source of heat and light for the ceremony.

  17. - Reddbyrd - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 4:37 pm:

The GOPs (as in MOPEs) have just released their Inaugural Day events list.
All GOPs will meet in men’s room at D.H. Brown’s!

  18. - Master of the Obvious - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 6:08 pm:

When I took my office, a return message was left on the email of some former employees that read, “Temporarily out of office. Will return in January 2007.” Since they’re returning, I would like to see an event accomodating them. Maybe a runner-up ball? You know, they did beat the Green party…this time.

  19. - Disgusted - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 6:47 pm:

I would like to see Fitz join Blago in a little dance, much as Judy did during the first inaugural ball and quietly waltz him out the door into a paddy wagon.

  20. - Disgusted - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 6:49 pm:

I almost forgot. I would have laid big money on a bet that said that the inauguration would be in Chicago. Why keep of the pretense anymore? We all know where the seat of government is and it ain’t below I-80.

  21. - chiefkay - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 7:37 pm:

Wonder if there is a dollar dance at the ball

  22. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 8:48 pm:

..and don’t forget the Wyma/Petrovic “client sign-up stations” right between the bar and the buffet at the Ball so they can snare the few suckers left unclaimed.

  23. - Tessa - Monday, Dec 18, 06 @ 9:34 pm:

Are these official times, or the times he’s going to show up? Since we know he’s never on time for anything? Should everyone show up late like he does?

  24. - Whizbang - Tuesday, Dec 19, 06 @ 1:59 am:

Gee… I remember when I was young and they held events at the Armory. Oh wait they don’t have hot water and we know Rod does a lot of hand washing. Oh well to the fairgrounds it is. How about the perp walk trot?

  25. - Squideshi - Tuesday, Dec 19, 06 @ 9:15 am:

Hardy a victory worth celebrating for Blagojevich. He wasn’t even able to earn a simple majority.

  26. - Guy Fawkes - Tuesday, Dec 19, 06 @ 11:34 am:

Are Levine, Rezko & Cellini invite?

  27. - The End Is Soon ! - Tuesday, Dec 19, 06 @ 11:49 am:

Better yet, is Patrick Fitzgerald invited?
Wonder who’s ears Corruptovich will be whispering in???? Could the Feds take him away in cuffs during the inauguration?

  28. - Angie - Tuesday, Dec 19, 06 @ 12:38 pm:

I’ve got a better idea! Have magicians show up pulling bunnies out of hats in front of all the guests. It’ll be a symbolic gesture to remind the Gov of what the people of Illinois are now expecting of him, being that’s he’s promised everyone everything, but with no way to pay for it all.
