Question of the day

Thursday, Jul 26, 2007 - Posted by Rich Miller

Instead of the standard question today, I’d like to ask you a favor.

My intern Paul Richardson’s last day is tomorrow. He may be sticking around to do Morning Shorts for a while, but he’s leaving town on Saturday. Here’s what I wrote about him in this morning’s Capitol Fax…

My faithful and trusted intern, Paul Richardson, is leaving us tomorrow. Paul is going back to UIUC to finish his master’s degree and then perhaps to law school. I don’t know what I’m gonna do without that young man. He’s been a real treasure. Dependable, smart, honest, you name it. If you’re in Springfield this evening, head to Boone’s after session and help us send Paul off with gusto.

First, please try to make it to Boone’s tonight if you can.

Second, let’s all wish Paul well in comments. Thanks.

    Paul,
Good luck and thanks, even if you didn’t link to my blog enough in Morning Shorts… :-)

Seriously, if the kids didn’t have soccer tonight I would consider driving down to Springfield to ‘Visit the In-Laws’ and buy you a beverage.

    Thanks

    OneMan

  2. - Greg - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 9:45 am:

    Good luck and God’s speed.

  3. - vise77 - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 9:46 am:

Good luck, Paul. You will be missed.

If you end up going into public service, I thank you for that. It can be a thankless job, after all. But please try to hold onto to as many ideals of statesmanship and citizenship and service as you can.

  4. - Cassandra - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 9:52 am:

Good luck, and, as I said once before, Write a Book.
Could be a big career-booster, whether you choose journalism, law, or something else.

  5. - Levois - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 9:52 am:

Good job Paul and best of luck!

  6. - Anon from BB - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 9:53 am:

Good luck! Hopefully, this first hand look at how the state government operates hasn’t made you cynical and jaded.

  7. - It's 5 O'clock somewhere - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:00 am:

Paul, Best wishes as you continue your education. I trust your internship was fruitful and fun. Your contribution to Cap Fax helps keep me out of Springfield, and for that I’m thankful.

I’ll not be at Boone’s tonight to wish you well, but I will have a beverage in your honor to help send you off.

    Good Luck!

  8. - Squideshi - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:02 am:

    Good luck Paul!

  9. - Jaded - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:08 am:

I have had the opportunity to talk to Paul on several occasions at the Capital and other Springfield establishments. He is an extremely polite and bright young man, and I am sure Rich will miss his hard work.

Paul, good luck in your acedemic endeavors, and who knows, maybe we’ll see you back down here when you are all finished.

  10. - Boone Logan Square - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:12 am:

Paul, if your work here is any guide, you have a bright future ahead of you. Best of luck in grad school.

  11. - Napoleon has left the building - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:12 am:

Great job Paul, seriously. No slight to Rich, but I think you helped him improve his game this session. Capitol Fax and the blog have been better than ever and more valuable than ever to the subscribers this year. Good luck at UIC and beyond.

  12. - Team Sleep - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:12 am:

Paul, keep working hard. Stay in school; the biggest mistake I made was stopping after my bachelor’s. Great job on the posts and commentary and good job of keeping Rich in line.

  13. - Bull McCabe - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:17 am:

I see that the brains and looks of Capitol Fax is departing. Rich, make sure you get Paul to sign a “non-compete” clause!

Paul, I wish you well and the biggest compliment I can give you is that you are a great writer and I hope you put that talent to good use.

  14. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:19 am:

Thank you Paul for the work you have done to keep us informed.

Don’t stop doing your best, everything you do now will repay you a thousand times over.

  15. - Captain America - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:32 am:

Good Luck Paul. I’m sure the opportunity that Rich has given you has been a great experience.
You’ve had a front rwo seat for a genuine politcal spectacle the last several months.

I won’t be in Springfield until Governor’s Day on Augsut 15th.

  16. - Bill - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:34 am:

You did a great job.If you don’t get an “A” for your internship grade, give me a call and I’ll see what I can do.
    Good Luck, Buddy!

  17. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:37 am:

Bill, are you down here? It might be a treat for him to meet the secretive Blago-blogger Bill. lol

  18. - NIEVA - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:37 am:

Good luck and good fortune Paul in whatever you do. We have enjoyed your time with Rich and have learned from your stories. I’m in Vegas this week so I will make a bet while I’m here, that being we have’nt heard the last from you!!!

  19. - mr Blackwell - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:46 am:

Good luck Paul. In the future your suits should be dark in color and made out of wool, though.

  20. - BlueByrd - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:47 am:

Run Paul, and don’t ever look back!!

  21. - Siyotanka - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:52 am:

    Paul…
May your days be filled with sunshine
and wind always at your back…

  22. - Bill - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 10:54 am:

    Rich,
We’ve met, but Ill try to make it. I’m still in Chicago, the real capitol, but im leaving soon.

  23. - jaundiced eye - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 11:04 am:

    Paul,
If you haven’t connected on a personal level with Chapin Rose do so — and get to know some of the younger crowd in the political and legal circles in Champaign County. It’s the next logical step in building your resume and career! Good luck …

  24. - Commonsense in Illinois - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 11:11 am:

Well done, good and faithful Tonto! But don’t worry, at the pace this place is going, we’ll still be here when you graduate…

  25. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 11:38 am:

for those of us not in the patch pls post picture

  26. - Pull - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 11:43 am:

Paul, if Rich REALLY liked you, he’d give you a spare key to the boat:-) Good luck, hope your future lets you continue the work of opening-up the process of government to the people’s awareness.

  27. - amy - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 11:51 am:

Paul, thanks for putting your education into
practice in the real world. all those early
links to articles and your detailed reports
contribute to the good in Illinois. It may
not seem like there is much of that out there
now, but, you are on the side of the good.
keep a finger on the pulse, and get back in the
    game soon.
    Amy

  28. - Lainer - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:01 pm:

Good luck in everything you do. I hope we political junkies hear more from you in the future.

If I were single and about 20 years younger I would definitely be there tonight : )

  29. - Rep. John Fritchey - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:20 pm:

    Paul,

As you learned early on, always remember your code :)

    Great job my friend.

  30. - Garp - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:21 pm:

Thanks for doing such a fine job encapsulating the news stories. Your efforts saved me a great deal of time and helped me to realize there is a world outside Chicago. Good luck to you Paul.

  31. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:28 pm:

Good job Paul, it’s hard to believe you’re still in college. Best of luck!

  32. - Michelle Flaherty - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:30 pm:

You’re leaving? Were you going to say goodbye? I can do long distance if you can.

You’ll be back. Probably in a couple weeks when the state shuts down and your public college has to close its doors.

    I won’t be ignored Paul!

  33. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:31 pm:

Uh, are you stalking my intern? lol

  34. - Team Sleep - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:41 pm:

Rich, what time are spirits and libations?

  35. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:45 pm:

===Rich, what time are spirits and libations?===

When they’re done at the Statehouse or after 5ish, whichever comes later, I think. Not sure I want to start drinking at 2 o’clock.

  36. - pull it together - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:53 pm:

    Paul,

Very best of luck to you! See you tonight!

  37. - SeerSucker - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 12:53 pm:

Rich, get the guy the gift that every departing intern wants — beaver.
Plus, it would complete his wardrobe today.

  38. - 312 - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 1:19 pm:

    Paul,

You’ve been a great addition to CapFax, and it’s going to be very difficult to replace you.

Try not to snicker when your professor tries to tell you how s/he thinks state government REALLY works!

Drop me an email when you get settled and I will treat for a couple beers at one of the 312 area code establishments.

  39. - UIC vs UIUC - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 1:28 pm:

    UIUC=Urbana Champaign
    UIC=Illinois-Chicago

Nice job Paul, at the very least you have more attention to detail than some of the posters here…Have fun in Champaign.

  40. - JK - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 2:37 pm:

Paul, as Rep. Fritchey has already reminded you, remember your code!!! (or don’t lose your key, whatever the reason was that you almost froze to death). Sorry I won’t be in Springfield to wish you goodbye (or get you home).
I think Rich and the rest of us have greatly benefited from having you with us. Your talents will be of value wherever or whoever you end up working for. Don’t sell your self short. Make sure Rich is the last guy you work for on the cheap.
Good luck in Champaign. Maybe we can all take a road trip and meet you at Murphy’s for a beer.

  41. - Ken in Aurora - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 2:37 pm:

    Bon voyage, Paul!

  42. - Objective Dem - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 2:39 pm:

Instead of wishing you luck, I hope you marry into a family with clout. You did a good job, keep it up.

  43. - DC - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 2:42 pm:

Paul, You have an excellent ability to truly listen, observe and accurately communicate those observations with strong writing. These are gifts not many possess. You definitely helped Rich up the coverage. We’ll have some fun tonight.

  44. - jwscott72 - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 2:56 pm:

Best of luck Paul. Part of me wonders why you’d want to leave just when things are about to turn even more bizarre LOL. You will be an invaluable asset for whomever you choose to work. If you ever run for office, let us know.

  45. - ChicagoDem - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 3:57 pm:

Good luck Paul…you’ve done a fine job.

  46. - Independent One - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 4:09 pm:

    Paul,
Good luck and God Speed! I hope the time you’ve spent in Springfield has inspired you to come back in some capacity in the future. For the political junkies of Illinois, we can only hope that your integrity and love of government will bring you back.

  47. - Bambi & Koko - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 4:12 pm:

  48. - hollyringo - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 4:15 pm:

Good Luck Paul - you have done a great job and probably why I’m a faithful everyday reader. Don’t forget to write!

  49. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 4:22 pm:

Paul, you’ve taken great advantage of your excellent writing skills here on the Blog and I’ve enjoyed reading your work. I was on the same track as you (quite a few years ago) but never went on to Law School. I hope you stay the course.
Good luck in my home town. AA jr. is also at UIUC so I am in town frequently.

    Hope to see you tonight.

  50. - This state is sorry - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 4:50 pm:

“assistant state’s attorney Susan Lucas objected, as did an unidentified female lawyer apparently representing the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services”.

Did you mean assistant attorney general?

The state’s attorney’s office does not represent the State of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

  51. - Reddbyrd - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 5:26 pm:

    Paul:
I would suggest that you quit school and become a full time slave for Capt. Fax. Forget the brights lights of the big city or fat cash from the lawyer life.
Hopefully the quality fall off of the Fax and Blog will not be noticed. Most of us understand that Rich has never fully recovered from the buscapade with GRod and his brain trust.
You picked a great year to observe this process. It should make you run a long, long way away from government of all shapes and sizes.
Good luck and remember you have plenty of friends in state government who will be happy to bend the rules for you.

  52. - Ahem - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 5:27 pm:

You’re famous, Paul! You WILL have a great career, that’s a given!

  53. - Kiyoshi Martinez - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 5:39 pm:

Paul: Been great hanging out with you this past semester. Sorry I can’t make it to your going away party, but if I’m in Chambana I’ll be sure to get in touch with you.

  54. - bored now - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 5:51 pm:

thanks, paul! we might have lost morning shorts without you, and i would have missed out on several important stories without it. so i’ll always appreciate the work you did. liked your column, too…

  55. - Mr. Sarcastic - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 6:02 pm:

Paul, you are like the son I never had!

  56. - Justice - Thursday, Jul 26, 07 @ 8:33 pm:

Best of luck to you Paul. Based upon our privilege to see your talent first hand, I think luck will play a small role and your hard work and tenacity will take the lead. Great job and thanks for renewing our faith in the next generation!!
