AFP up with new TV ad

Friday, Oct 23, 2009 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Americans for Prosperity has a new cable TV ad connecting ACORN, SEIU, Rod Blagojevich and Gov. Pat Quinn. It airs from October 22nd through the 28th on the Fox News cable channel in the Chicago metro region.

AFP admits this is a “small” buy, but claims they are working on raising money for future buys…

During weekdays, it will be airing 3-4 times per day, in the morning news (5AM-9AM), in other words, about once per hour.

On the 2 weekend days, the spot will be playing during prime time (for cable), 7PM-Midnight, 3 times per day.

And here’s the ad…

Rate it.

It is clear they are playing to an audience that already believes there is no light between Acorn and SEIU since they make no effort whatsoever to explain the connection. If their goal is convert folks that are oblivious to the Acorn/SEIU conspiracy theories, they did a bad job.

  2. - Scooby - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 1:36 pm:

Do you really need to purchase an anti-ACORN ad to run on Fox News cable channel? Regardless of the merits of the content of the ad, it seems like a poor use of resources to purchase time to make a persuasive argument that will be made before and after the commercial break for free.

  3. - shore - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 1:37 pm:

The GOP right now reminds me of Democrats in 2001, utterly convinced that they were right and determined to scream rather than listen. This messaging is done by the base for the base without regards to who and what needs to actually be persuaded for the party to get back into power.

I also think this blog has really missed a major story this week in how congressman kirk has basically survived the sort of conservative challenge that is dooming a republican in upstate new york right now and threatening to doom republicans elsewhere. This is a big deal as the state hasn’t elected a pro-choice gop senator in my lifetime, and comes at a point in which polling is showing 19 percent of republicans don’t believe obama is an american.

  4. - OdysseusVL - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 1:50 pm:

Shore, kind of quick to decide that Kirk has won, aren’t you?

  5. - OdysseusVL - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 2:06 pm:

One note about the choice of FoxNews — I don’t think this ad is about changing minds. I think it is more about driving people to that website to continue to build the database.

More red meat to make the same hounds drool. Waste of money.

  7. - Ghost - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 2:27 pm:

Hynes will get a leg up from this, interesting timing from the AFP…. seems to work against them. Ultimatly this add timing helps put a stronger dem canidate up reducing the chance for their preffered GOP’er to win.

  8. - WOW - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 2:44 pm:

I think they are a bit late with the ad. That being said they need to gin up the real republican race. There are to many people in the race for the candidates to do it on their own. This message bumps up turnout.

Sorry to say this “Ghost” but I don’t think either of the Dem. candidates have shown they will be strong. Quinn is flopping around like he has for the last 10 months and Dan is adrift in a sea not having any idea where port is.

Really no stand out choice on either front for the voters of this state … right when we need a real leader.

  9. - Montrose - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 2:45 pm:

++Hynes will get a leg up from this++

That assumes that folks that would vote in a Democratic primary would see this ad.

  10. - Just Observing - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 2:52 pm:

Montrose is right… other than the doom n’ gloom vibe, the commecial makes absolutely no connection between Acorn and SEIU. Even if it manages to scare up some people, it is unethical not to even attempt to educate as to what the link is.

  11. - Deep South - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 3:07 pm:

Shore has hit it on the nose. The rabid right is in a real lather. Most will take their outrage to far right “third party” candidates, leaving mainstream GOP office seekers high and dry. (Look under the bus for John McCain.) What’s going on in New York right now is an excellent example of what I think we’re gonna see over the next several election cycles. Anti-ACORN spots on Fox does nothing more than whip the Rush/Beck/Hannity/Cheney axis into even more of a frenzy. If the mainstream Republican Party has any leaders with a plan right now, I haven’t heard about it. I really believe these folks got to be worried about a base that seems to have lost its mond. In any event, ACORN isn’t the SEIU and it isn’t running for offce.

  12. - Deep South - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 3:11 pm:

Oh, and if the Dems want to be smart about it, they should somehow encourage members of the ultra-right to create third parties and get their candidates on every ballot in America.

Me thinks Sen. Brady signed up for the wrong Extreme Makeover show - or is that mean?

  14. - Thomas Westgard - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 3:35 pm:

I enthusiastically support using the ACORN standard to determine which corporations will be eligible to do business with our government:

  15. - Who's fooling who? - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 4:32 pm:

Hmmm…from the SEIU Local website http://www.seiulocal880.com/index.php?id=634

…Our sister organization and close ally, ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, helped to found our Union over 20 years ago. We continue to work together …

Hmmm…who says there is not a connection?

  16. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 4:33 pm:

=== I think it is more about driving people to that website to continue to build the database. ===

Yeah, that “database” is called the “list of registered voters”, and in Illinois they have an “R” by their names.

Terribly confusing ad, big waste of money, but I’m glad some consultant got paid.

  17. - Think about it - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 4:41 pm:

I went to the website at saynotoacorn.com - there are some pretty interesting articles that clarify why the ad has some legs.

Hynes may want to take a look!

  18. - Will County Woman - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 4:45 pm:

I am so happy that the Home Health providers rejected the unions. Fox32 did a report about this issue last week and it did NOT put governor quinn in a flattering light. In fact it really showed the depths to which he has sunk ethically and politically. I am happy that the families stood up for themselves. If my memory serves according to the fox32 report there were 3000 families involved. And, that’s 3000 votes that quinn won’t get.

I wish him well on Feb 2, 2010, though.

  19. - Montrose - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 4:48 pm:

    ++Hynes may want to take a look!++

If Hynes gets out of the primary, he is going to want and need SEIU’s money and volunteers. He is not going to start bashing them now.

  20. - Montrose - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 4:51 pm:

    ++Hmmm…who says there is not a connection?++

I didn’t say there is no connection. I said the commercial in no way shows the connection.

  21. - Think about it - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 4:54 pm:

Who says Hynes would be doing the bashing…think about it.

  22. - David Starrett - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 5:12 pm:

ACORN was the target of a fifth column operation precisely because they were effective. Unfortunately the fifth column operation was too.

  23. - Warner Todd Huston - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 5:30 pm:

Great, this is the kind of stuff we need.

  24. - kylecarroll5 - Friday, Oct 23, 09 @ 5:45 pm:

The people that are commenting and bashing on the ad are completely off-base. This ad is to remind the people of the Prairie State of Illinois who have had enough of the corruption that Governor Quinn should not engage in the same politics like his predecessor did.

However, the Governor has already received over $40,000 from SEIU.

Also, this payback allowed for Quinn to try to force the unionization of home health care workers. However, I give these brave people who shot down the plan via the secret ballot vote all the credit to prevent this. There are stories on blogs including RedState and Michelle Malkin that SEIU organizers bullied and harassed even parents of disabled children.

Please sign the petition at www.saynotoacorn.com and tell Governor Quinn enough is enough. Live up to your message on ethics.

Perhaps it’s the first of a series.

  26. - well then - Sunday, Oct 25, 09 @ 1:58 am:

sorry to say this but that is the most assnighn ad i have eve seen

  27. - VanillaMan - Monday, Oct 26, 09 @ 8:59 am:

Considering the score, the detractors are more right than wrong, and the defenders have been consistently wrong.
