* WTTW’s Chicago Tonight program is airing a live Democratic gubernatorial debate tonight at 7 o’clock. It won’t be simulcast on the Intertubes, so I won’t get a chance to watch.

Those of you who live in “the Chicagoland area,” as the locals say, would be doing the rest of us a big favor if you live-blogged the debate in comments. Thanks much and have fun.

…Adding… Huffpost Chicago will be live Tweeting the debate.

…Adding More… The Tribune’s story is already up

Gov. Pat Quinn and state Comptroller Dan Hynes traded charges of incompetence tonight in a televised debate with a week to go in their tight race for the Democratic primary for governor. […]

Hynes contended [the Harold Washington ad] showed Washington firing Quinn for “incompetence and mismanagement”, adding “that’s what we got” from Quinn’s first year as governor. […]

Quinn hit Hynes again over the comptroller’s limited role in overseeing cemeteries, saying he “completely dropped the ball” on the Burr Oak Cemetery scandal in which cemetery workers are accused of digging up bodies and re-selling graves.

“He was incompetent,” Quinn said.

* 7:55 pm - And it’s over. Check the comments for a great live-blog. We definitely need to do this again. Excellent job, campers.

If you’re just coming back to the site, now’s your chance to tell us what you thought.

I found it odd that when the candidates were asked to name one thing they liked about each other, Quinn went after Hynes again. Not exactly the high road.

Anyway, your thoughts?

I can tell you what’s gonna happen now if you like :)

Great column, BTW Rich. I was thinking about the incumbency issue myself.

And not to make more out of it than a speech, but I don’t think Quinn’s legal-paper ramblings during the State-of-the-State did much to help him on the competency issue.

We are thinking it will a good time to slam down some cold ones before Hour V of 24 beams in a 8 p.m.

  3. - frank booth - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 5:33 pm:

Thanks for posting the phrase “Chicagoland area” Rich. It gives me a chance to launch into my favorite rant:

First, combining the words “Chicagoland” and “area” is redundant! Anytime I see the two words joined together in a newspaper ad or hear someone say it in conversation I want to scream. Either “Chicagoland” or “Chicago area” are grammatically permissible. “Chicagoland area” is not!

Second, the term Chicagoland is incredibly cheesy and the subject of much deserved ridicule by out-of-towners. The term was coined by Colonel McCormick for the local section of the Chicago Tribune. McCormick was an SOB and highly biased editor of the Trib for years. McCormick Place, the convention center that bears his name is on the verge of being imploded. Let’s banish the term “Chicagoland” while we’re at it.

15 yard penalty on wttw for not doing a gop candidate debate.

10 yard penalty for not putting it live.

15 yard penalty for not having ponce do the grilling, he buried dorothy brown last week. that was beautiful to watch.

  5. - HuffPost Chicago - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 6:20 pm:

    Hey there Rich,

As always, sharp analysis of the races today. The point on Quinn’s newfound incumbency is particularly astute. Consider us hooked on Capitol Fax.

Also, just wanted to let you know that we’ll be following the debate live on Twitter (@HuffPostChicago).

Thanks! Keep up the great coverage.

  11. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:05 pm:

question 1. harold washington and quinns competence.

quinster:defedning his record in chicago revenue office.

q2-did HW ever tell you to do something bad?

Quinnster-no, there were others that did. HW was a quinnster guy.

  12. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:06 pm:

Quinn is playing Mr. Clean. He’s implying Harold was corrupt and that’s why he was fired. Oh wait, he resigned.

  13. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:06 pm:

“he asked me to leave????.. no I didn’t get fired??

  14. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:06 pm:

quinnster- I was resigning not getting fired. it was a management issue.

first hit on blago-I’m not them.

Hynes-it speaks for itself. tells a story, quinn was fired for grandstanding, exactly what we’ve seen this year. calls quinn out for public relations situation not changing.

  15. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:07 pm:

Now he’s talking about Danny’s old man.

  16. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:07 pm:

Dan, ask about the 100,000 that Ed burke gave him…

  17. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:08 pm:

Hynes. I was 18 years old. I love my father.

  18. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:08 pm:

quinnster- you dont put picture on the ad, you and your dad were anti HW, you were in your dads ads, I stoood with him, you were against us. I dont want to go back to racial issues. You didnt put your picture on the ad. This is a racial attack.

Hynes-I was 18 then, pat quinn is not running against my dadm hes running against me. this is not racial.

quinnster- when I was 18, i was working for bobby kennedy, I was with mlk when I was 18, I tried to rbing us together, hynes, was against HW, he’s doing that to me.

  19. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:08 pm:

    Quinn:when I was 18 years old I worked for Bobby Kennedy.LOL

  20. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:09 pm:

Quinn is looking bad…kinda like a rat with a flashlite in its eyes..

  21. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:09 pm:

    q3-cemetery.

hynes-(ignores question)attacking quinnster for running nasty ads. I am not at fault for burr oaks. this was the beuracrats fault. not me.

  22. - Rich Miller - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:10 pm:

    Take it easy.

Good job so far, but take it easy.

Referring, of course, to the “rat” comment.

  23. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:11 pm:

hynes-this is a group fault, and quinn is trying to use this for political gain. no one person is responsible for this

quinnster-showing press releases actual documents of past hynes taking credit for cemetery issues. unloading on hynes for neglecting role on his one job.

  24. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:12 pm:

    BINGO DAN!!!! woohoooo

  25. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:12 pm:

Quinn is calling Danny incompetent for the Burr Oak thing. He looks really mad. Calm down, Quinn!

  26. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:12 pm:

sorry Rich… ment to say deer :)

  27. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:13 pm:

I almost feel sorry for Quinn. He is kinda pathetic.

  28. - Irish Eyes - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:13 pm:

Quinn fired back on the cemetery issue. You don’t issue press releases telling people to call your office with cemetery complaints, then claim you can do nothing about cemetery complaints. Egad. Also, BS this ain’t personal. These two don’t like each other.

  29. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:13 pm:

quinnster- you are not taking responsibility. You are not being honest.

hynes-we now know what HW was talking about it. Quinnster showing actual press releases.

qustion 4-this has gotten nasty, has it gotten too personal?

quinnster- I tried to be a uniter, jesse white joined me. day 1 I came in and gave budget proposal, hynes ignored me.

  30. - bwana - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:13 pm:

Quinn finally has a new tie, I wish Hynes would explain SOS (Quinn endorser) roles and how many resposibilities they have its more than one responsibilty per office Gov.

  31. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:13 pm:

LOL great comment by Hynes about how he “now knows what Harold Washington was talking about with PR gimmicks” when PQ pulled out old press releases.

  32. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:14 pm:

    Hynes looks cool.. very smooth

  33. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:15 pm:

You’d never know who the supposed front runner is watching these two guys.

  34. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:15 pm:

q5 budget. what do we do.

quinnster- we cant cut human services. hynes went to misrecordia for 5 minutes to bash me.

we’ve got everything possible. Nothing left to cut.

hynes-q and i agree that we need more money. (first mention of gop)republicans all agree we need to cut. q wants to raise taxes on the middle class.

quinnster- we shouldnt let our system go to waste. plan before legislature doesnt provide money. hynes is 4 billion off.

  35. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:16 pm:

    Danny’s toying with him.

  36. - anon - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:16 pm:

Bill, how can you be giving accurate commentary so frewuently? How can you report on what was said and listen to the debate at the same time?

  37. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:16 pm:

Uggghhh! I cannot watch it right now. Thanks for the play by play, guys. I hoped Quinn would be more toned down. His people aren’t helping him.

  39. - bwana - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:18 pm:

Hynes needs to go to the prison issue and why we would offer it for less $$$ than built cost, and how many “cons” are on the street at this time..and ask Gov are Illionoians prepared to handle “terrorists” in our communities?

  40. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:19 pm:

    quinn-you’ve approved 11 borrowings.

quinn-I am never going to put peoples lives at stakes for lobbyists.

  41. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:20 pm:

q6 pension reform. is there pol will for 2 tiers.

quinn-if I win, yes. luxury pensions for pensions. we need that money for other things. taxpayers come first

    hynes-quinn is flipflopper

  42. - Rich Miller - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:21 pm:

We should do this more often. You guys are great. Keep it coming!!!

  43. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:22 pm:

How many pensions does Quinn have? I wonder if he thinks they are “extravagant”.

  44. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:22 pm:

hynes. first thing we need is a governor who wants to pay this. quinn didn’t.

quinn-he talks about double dipping hynes dad was a double dipper.

  45. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:23 pm:

.. now he is draging Dan’s dad in this… los move.

  46. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:23 pm:

  47. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:23 pm:

There he goes with Danny’s old man again.

On pension double dipping - PQ : You should look at your father because he is a double dipper

  52. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:25 pm:

Hynes just called Pat Quinn too old for public office.

DH: “My father retired 15 years ago. Maybe you should too.”

  53. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:25 pm:

    I’m for veterans. He’s not.

  54. - bwana - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:25 pm:

OK Hynes ask him why he stood side by side with Daley and indicated that the Unions involved at McPier should open and desolve the collective bargaining agreements, Quinn and Daley the big union guys, Quinn wont say lets remove the board where his and Daleys patronage AND $$$$ are!!! its not the workers! Everyday people…spare me

  55. - Irish Eyes - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:25 pm:

Topic is pension reform. Hynes says pay into the system honestly every year, don’t do anything to stop lavish pensions. Quinn says cut high pension benefits for large earners, for a two-tier system, finally calls out Thomas Hynes for being a double dipper and having over 100k a year in income from public pension systems.

  56. - anon - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:25 pm:

Quinn says I support two tier pension system. Hynes, I don’t support two tier system. Hynes is for the unions, quinn is for the people.

  57. - Rich Miller - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:26 pm:

YDD, that appears to be a bit of a stretch, even for you. Relax, please.

  58. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:26 pm:

  60. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:27 pm:

q7 what happened in massachusettes, are you about to be coakleyed

quinn, im an independent. hynes was against recall. I am the commander in chief of national guard. i stand for every day people.

marin-but everyday people hate your guts-everyone thinks you guys are failing. you are fiscal drunks.

hynes- I was endorsed by 15 newspapers because i am a fiscal hawk. I have a plan.

quinnster-i have been endorsed by teh people. because i get jobs. tomorrow ford gets us 1200 jobs because of me. comptroller hasn’t created 1 job in 12 years.

marin-but Illinois stinks at job creation and it will stnk for years.

quinnster-but we beat canada for ford. my friend has never had any experience in job creation.

  61. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:27 pm:

    …thanks to me….. this guy’s really delusional

  62. - Stuck with Sen. CPA - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:27 pm:

Quinn claims direct credit for the new Ford jobs. Interesting.

  63. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:29 pm:

hynes-but we’ve gotten crushed with jobs.

quinnster-are you blaming obama he took office same time as me? comptroller had nothing to do with infrastructure stimulus. 2,000 miles of roads last year. we are fully funded for captial bill. high speed rail is supercalafragilisticexpealadious. hynes hasn’t created a job

q8-how do your subordinates discribe your leadership style?

  64. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:29 pm:

PQ: The people of IL want to entrust their economy to someone who hasnt created one job in 12 years

  65. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:30 pm:

Quinn is raelly starting to rant. Calm down, Pal! He’s all red in the face. I hope he doesn'’t stroke out.

  66. - bwana - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:30 pm:

Biggest construction season? the construction trades if they told the truth never got above 19% unemployed…and this year looks worse…..Quinn is proving politics can be an illusion…

I’m still waiting on the answer to Question 8. lol

  68. - Irish Eyes - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:31 pm:

Carol Marin is doing a great job. Hynes just said, “Pat Quinn has lost his bearings.” This is heated.

  69. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:33 pm:

hynes-I am basically the best government ceo in America. he didnt clean out blago’s team (first reference to blago0

quinnster cuts him off, brings up a guy daniel pick who sabotoged illinois business. Hynes has a part time inspector general. this is why burr oaks happened.

hynes-pat has lost his bearings. we had a guy blogging on penny stocks.

quinsster-it took you 3 years to figure it out..

hynes-you should have canned blagos team as I told you.

quinnster-you are demonizing people. your guy hated on business for 3 years.

marin-what happened iwht your prison director.

(for those scoring at home the big issue in Illinois is jobs right now and they are fighting about inside baseball b.s. and you wonder how we got so screwed)

quinnster- back to hating on the comptroller for the burial grouds.

hynes-governor is not accountable. we’ve got 7 different excuses (they are back to prisons). now a massive coverup. we had to read in nytimes.com that they dont know who was released.

  70. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:33 pm:

    lol!

  71. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:34 pm:

Quinn said that the capitol bill is fully funded. Did I miss the bond issue?

  72. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:34 pm:

quinnster- I hated early release, legislature didn’t want to fund. these guys were let out 37 days early. not a big deal. (quinns face has gotten super red)

q9-how will you tame mike madigan?

  73. - bwana - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:34 pm:

Other than Rich, Carols’ the best!! come on gang lets ALL AGREE on somethin’….

  74. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:34 pm:

Hynes: The Governor has not given us a straight answer on the prisoner release program, he has given us 7 different answers.

PQ: We need more accountability- links it to GA oversight.

  75. - P. - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:34 pm:

“I don’t like criminals.” That’s something I can get behind.

So that’s it about the prison program?! Carol lets em off the hook.

  76. - Stuck with Sen. CPA - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:35 pm:

Marin: Ever beat Mike Madigan in a fight?

Quinn: Yes, on recall. Invokes Sheila Simon.

  77. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:35 pm:

quinnster- I worked with him on recall. I told him we needed campaign finance reform. sheila simon and I worked together. she said its many many slices. (this debate is all inside baseball).

  87. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:39 pm:

In all three of their most recent debates (last week and today) Quinn has gotten quite a bit of sympathy from the panelists/moderators. The only exception would be the lady from the Daily Herald, at the ABC-7 debate, who kept asking him about his 3 budgets and incessant flip-flopping.

    quinn-civil union-its passable

    gun control
    quinn-tougher
hynes-hitting quinn on expanding concealed carry.

  102. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:45 pm:

    Go SOX!!

  103. - Todd - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:45 pm:

They just hit on guns and hynes flubbed it.

  104. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:45 pm:

Quinn - Im a white sox fan but my heart is big enough for two fans

    Yeesh

  105. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:46 pm:

    “two teams”

  106. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:46 pm:

Hynes- shakes his head and says hes a white sox fan, “you gotta pick a team”

  107. - Irish Eyes - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:47 pm:

On gun control. Quinn- tighter restrictions on some assault weapons. Hynes hits Quinn on concealed carry, but the concealed carry was for retired peace officers.

  108. - bwana - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:48 pm:

Hynes on the 2nd amendment, are you nuts?? let the courts determine the issue, guns don’t kill people….the blue dogs down state just popped a Budweiser

  109. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:48 pm:

From the comments here this debate sounds like a real wash, and kinda like the ABC-7 debate. there doesn’t appear to be a winner or loser.

  110. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:48 pm:

    cubs or sox

quinnster-my heart is big enough for 3 teams
hynes-i am a sox fan. finally says something nice to quinn.

    live in mansion?
hynes we’ve discussed this with wife. if elected will move.

end of free rides for seniors
    quinnster-freeze for 2 years.
hynes-back to hitting quinn, quinnster has flipflopped. (kids clean toilets but buffy the kenilworth heir gets free transpo)

    marin-southern illinois gets the shaft?
quinnster-we need to invest downstate. I put reformers on toll way board.

equity on funding (I am personally opposed to this)

quinnster-meeks and other reformers are with me.

  111. - Paul S. - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:49 pm:

Gotta say, the people he appointed to the tollway board are not reformers. Political appointments they all are.

  112. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:49 pm:

On school funding reform- Quinn - “He has never passed a constitutional amendment , I have. I am for senator meeks’ plan”

  113. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:49 pm:

then again, this WTTW format isn’t a debate technically or at least that is what Carol Marin et. al have said when hosting last week.

  114. - Paul S. - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:50 pm:

Quinn — get off the burr oak issue. Killing a dead horse.

  115. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:51 pm:

    Quinn knows he’s losing.

  116. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:51 pm:

    mistakes?

quinster- I work hard. I dont share my private life. I dont share mistakes.

hynes-I was a young 30 something. I didnt stand up to george ryan. (dumb move)

quinnster- back to hitting him on burr oaks.

    lt.guv who are you for?

quinnster-all good guys (team america has other ideas). I am a great ltguv they should be like me.

hynes-I want to get rid of lt.gov office. its waste.

quinnster-its been around since 1818 we’ve had some good ones. cites himself.

  117. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:51 pm:

    What is your biggest mistake?

    quinn- wouldnt answer, too private

hynes - “Ill share a mistake, why not. When George ryan gave his 1st budget address he loaded it with wasteful spending, and i never spoke out. I wish I did. Every year since I’ve been an outspoken critic. I should have trusted my insticts.”

Quinn jumps on Hynes for Burr Oak and not having insticts there- Hynes - Pat why not concentrate on your mistakes instead of jumping in on my answer

  118. - Rich Miller - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:52 pm:

A little explanation, please, Bill? Some of your drive-bys are less than illuminating. lol

  119. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:52 pm:

lol…Quinn, can’t say if he would support Haynes….

  120. - Stuck with Sen. CPA - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:52 pm:

Hynes: Eliminate the Lt. Gov. office, merge Treasurer and Comptroller

Quinn hits the roof. It’s been there since 1818!

Hynes says so, it’s OK just because it’s been there all this time?

  121. - Seriously? - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:53 pm:

Hahahaha….Quinn totally defensive when Hynes says the Office of Lt Gov (Quinn’s former title) is useless.

Quinn refuses to say whether he’d support Hynes if he won.

  122. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:53 pm:

Hynes:I’ll support Pat if he wins.
    Quinn: I’m a democrat

  123. - bwana - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:53 pm:

Leut. Gov. been around since 1818????? we started the last session with 8000 bills we incorporated in 1818 and still dont have it right!!!

  124. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:53 pm:

Dan I love it! Thank you! A man who cannot admit he’s made mistakes when he definitely has and then wants to point out your faults when your actually doing that yourself has a problem, and isn’t good/quality governor material.

  125. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:53 pm:

We are looking at a melt down….

  126. - Paul S. - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:53 pm:

Hynes takes the high road, gains some points in my book. Quinn, negative and whining. Quinn talks about low road, and he’s done negative slinging along with Hynes.

  127. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:54 pm:

hynes-I will support quinn-republicans stink and we need to avoid them. (2nd mentions of republicans)

what do you like about each other

quinnster-I think its tough hynes didnt help me. everyone else did. first mention of lisa and alexi. He hung me out to dry. He was political from day 1. He’s run a low road campaign. i am dissapointe.d

hynes-I think guv has been good on veterans.

    last question

will you watch blago on apprentice

quinnster-no i was in iraq when he wanted to be debate.d

    hynes-another agreement.

    end.

  128. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:54 pm:

This was fun Rich.. Thanks…. the debate wasn’t even close, and tho I’v know Quinn for many years… he would get eatin up in November…Haynes looked good.

  129. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:54 pm:

PQ: Im disappointed in this campaign, hes taken the low road, very sleazy

  130. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:55 pm:

Sorry about the drive bys but this is really funny. I’m laughing to hard to type much.

  131. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:55 pm:

Hynes- I believe the question was to say something positive, and thats what we got from pat- (chuckling) I would compliment quinn on his service to vets

  132. - espoir - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:55 pm:

I really enjoyed that debate. Quinn won.

  133. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:56 pm:

Did Hynes really say that the repubs “stink”????
That doesn’t sound like him at all.

  134. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:56 pm:

hynes spent the entire hour hitting quinn. I haven’t seen a performance like this in a long time.

the best line was quinn calling himself one of the best lt guvs of all time and a reason to keep the office.

  135. - Paul S. - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:56 pm:

Quinn looked angry and defensive the whole time. Isn’t the saying “it isn’t personal it’s politics” make it into Quinn’s handbook? He seemed very thin skinned tonight. Now I’m leaning Hynes.

  136. - Jack - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:56 pm:

Thanks Rich. Where will be able to see it online?

  137. - Rich Miller - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:58 pm:

I dunno, Jack. I assume WTTW will have it up eventually. Not sure when.

  138. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:58 pm:

Paul S., Quinn was the exact same way in last week’s two debates.

  139. - Cindy Lou - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:59 pm:

Thanks, all… I didn’t know you were so funny, shore… much appreciated.

  140. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:59 pm:

    Excellent job, shore!

  141. - Rich Miller - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:59 pm:

espoir, a reason or two by way of explanation would be nice.

  142. - Bring Back Boone's - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:59 pm:

Hynes takes that one in a landslide- looked cool, calm collected, and had good policy analysis. PQ looked entitled, angry, and hostile. Couldn’t stay on message or rise above personal shots. His handlers must be having a group aneurysm.

  143. - Rich Miller - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 7:59 pm:

Bill, I agree. Great job, shore. Great job.

  144. - frank booth - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:00 pm:

Quinn was very strong early. Scored points on Burr Oak and the line about him working for Bobby Kennedy when he was 18. But as the debate wore on Quinn seem to tire and get angry. Hynes was more likable — not unimportant in these things.

  145. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:00 pm:

==His handlers must be having a group aneurysm.==
    LOL

  146. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:01 pm:

sorry rich…that’s what I heard, but I’m gettin purty old now, so my hearin aint so good.

  147. - Padraig - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:01 pm:

DH appeared entitled throughout, with nothing to offer as his own professional accomplishments. No specific plan offered i.e. two-tiered pensions, ignoring questions i.e. Madigan influence. What are his qualifications? What real professional position has he ever held?

  148. - Responsa - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:02 pm:

Hynes mainly came across as the adult. Quinn as the teenager who’s trying to spin his way out of a goofup. It even made Hynes grin a couple of times. At first I thought Hynes was being too passive, but as the program progressed I realized that letting Quinn rant and bloviate and repeat himself was probably part of Hynes’ strategy.

  149. - Bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:03 pm:

Danny just let Quinn be himself. Good strategy!

  150. - Irish Eyes - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:04 pm:

Carol Marin did a great job. The first thirty minutes was hot, and then it cooled down just a little. Both candidates did fine. Hynes dodged the pension issue. He sounded more wonkish, Quinn sounded more like a guy you would have a beer with at the vets club. Quinn gave his best answer yet about Harold Washington. I thought Quinn was going to hit Tom Hynes more on that Harold Washington vs. The Old Irish Guard type stuff. He didn’t do it.

Nice how both candidates talked a little about their families. Quinn needs to quote more scripture and talk about “Sister Beatrice” or whoever that Nun was. Hynes needs to talk about how he likes to chug beer while eating hot dogs in the bleaches at US Cellular field, but I don’t think he does that sort of thing.

  151. - Irish Eyes - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:04 pm:

  152. - Jack - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:04 pm:

Hilarious that Hynes said Eliminate the Lt. Gov. office, merge Treasurer and Comptroller!

  153. - cassandra - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:05 pm:

I tried to listen as if I didn’t know much about either man, other than Quinn’s incumbency. I thought they both did well but I don’t think Hynes knocked Quinn off his perch in any sense. And that’s what you have to do with an incumbent.
I’m still going to vote for Hynes, but if I were just starting to pay attention to this race, I certainly wouldn’t have seen Quinn as unworthy of the office.

One thing I noticed was how big Quinn is physically, at least compared with Hynes. He kind of dominates physically. I wonder if there is any research to show that bigger candidates are more likely to win political races against smaller opponents…

  154. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:05 pm:

I doubt this debate changed anyone’s mind.

I’ll say I’ve been worrying that Quinn’s lost his will over these last couple of weeks, but he’s still got alot of fight left in him.

    It just seems a little…undirected.

The line from Quinn about how he was campaigning for Bobby Kennedy when he was 18, while Dan Hynes was trying to take down Harold Washington was a pretty good one.

  155. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:06 pm:

If you didn’t know who was Gov at the debate…. and some one asked you, who do you think??… 9 out of 10 would have picked Haynes tonight..

  156. - 47th Ward - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:10 pm:

OK, I just got back here and before I wade through 150+ comments, I just want to say “Jesse White” is the new “Land of Lincoln.”

Also, Quinn had a little Capt. Queeg going there for a while.

Finally, Hynes won it in my book with his last four answers.

But I’ll wait and read more…I’m often wrong.

  157. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:12 pm:

the translations were not approximate. and you should note i am a proud north shore republican. the parentheseed things were my own comments.

they generally put stuff up on at 10pm or later. from my standpoint this was an hour of personal grudge match politics that had nothing to do with illinois or any sort of change. Tomorrow will be just as bad when outside of dan proft everyone on my team basically says the same thing with personal invectives thrown in.

  158. - DemVOTER - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:15 pm:

47th Ward wrote….I just want to say “Jesse White” is the new “Land of Lincoln.”… not going to even comment on that one…

  159. - shore - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:17 pm:

I also don’t know how you root for all 3 baseball teams. I could see a cardinal white sox axis against the cubs, but that smells.

it will be interesting if adam and proft get seats at the table tomorrow night for the wttw debate. neither of them has ever polled above brady, dillard, mckenna,or ryan but both are within 14 points which is almost as close as alexi and hoffman.

  160. - Padraig - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:18 pm:

Quinn had Hynes on the ropes re BurrOak, one of the few responsibilities in the Comptrollers Office. Than Hynes admits the office should be abolished. Again, what trees has Hynes planted in his professional career ?

  161. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:18 pm:

references to meeks & jesse white won’t help Quinn with black voters. so he need not name-dropping all week long.

  162. - Will County Woman - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:20 pm:

    pad–

hynes believes the lt. guv office should be abolished and the comptoller and treasurer merged.

  163. - Responsa - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:21 pm:

To add on to what Shore just said I thought the extreme self focus by each candidate on himself and the other guy, to the general exclusion of the larger state of the state issues was sad. Maybe the group up to bat tomorrow will manage to do better on that score.

  164. - North Side Novice - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:22 pm:

Reading these comments makes me wonder if we watched the same program on WTTW. Hynes didn’t deliver a knock out punch; Quinn did okay except when he knocked Dan’s father. To the general public, they both came off okay. I’d give the win to Quinn by a small margin since he’s the incumbent.

  165. - 47th Ward - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:27 pm:

It started as a race to the bottom and that was a draw. Once Marin let them land there, where neither really wants to be, the debate picked up a little. It was the first time I’ve ever seen Dan Hynes look totally comfortable in his own skin. He stayed close to his message points, despite the rambling format, and generally kept his focus and his cool.

Quinn brought his A-game. Nothing went unanswered. He was relentless and on the offense the whole time. Unfortunately, once we get a transcript of this, Quinn may need a new chiropractor. By far the most spirited and insightful exchanges I’ve seen so far.

Spin away my friends and tell me who won, but this was worth the price of admission, a great debate!

  166. - Anonymous - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:29 pm:

    {Quinn is probably not sleeping well or enough these days and he’s eating fast-food on the run. Not good signs. Just in looking at him lately he doesn’t look/seem fresh anymore.}

This is exactly the reason why we need Hollywood Hendon to win the Lt. Gov. nomination. Almost like having Richard Pryor just a hear beat away from the throne.

  167. - espoir - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:31 pm:

Quinn hit back against attacks. He appealed to a wide constituency by using great examples to back up his points. He came across as focused, confident, determined and knowledgeable about what we need to do to get us out of the crisis. in my opinion.

  168. - Quinn T. Sential - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:34 pm:

Sorry; the Hollywood “anon” was me suffering from a pre-mature eblogulation.

This live action forum is digital proof of exactly why you have “live blog” the Blago trial this summer. I might even have to morph back into Blagosphere just for the occasion.

  169. - Quinn T. Sential - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:40 pm:

    {Gotta say, the people he appointed to the tollway board are not reformers. Political appointments they all are.}

Tom Weisner a “reformer”? I’ll have to tee that one up for Boers & Bernstein’s “Who You Crappin” segment later in the week.

  170. - Padraig - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:44 pm:

espoir, I agree completly. I think you and I saw a completly different debate than tonights bloggers. Southside Dan had a smirk and chip on his shoulder. Not too endearing to the common folk.

  171. - Stopping By . . . - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 8:46 pm:

Just noticed Hynes took in another cool 1/4 mil. today from teachers, laborers and other friends.

  172. - Blue Dog - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 9:02 pm:

Thanks for doing this guys. It allows us poor downstate political junkies a chance to follow blow by blow.

Re: 2nd ammendment - No budweisers popped by me. I am an ISRA member who is phone banking for Hynes Friday. I don’t like his position on guns but he is the stronger candidate to win in November. He continues to confuse closing a legal loophole for an “expansion of concealed carry”. The bill they refer to dealt with handling / carry issues when on another persons property.

Quinn signed the bill to earn his preference from ISRA but he keeps bringing up the assault rifle boogeyman / myth.

  173. - Seriously? - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 9:42 pm:

DemVoter…for the love of God, it’s HYNES - not Haynes. HYNES.

  174. - Responsa - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 10:00 pm:

I assume Rich will be posting it tomorrow, but I just saw a new Adam A. for gov. ad which is pretty interesting—and also information about someone he’s bringing in to campaign for him later this week.

  175. - bill - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 10:23 pm:

Quinn had the upper hand tonight i thought. He did seemed a bit frazzled but clearly demonstrated knowledge of issues and what needs to be done.

  176. - Irish Eyes - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 10:35 pm:

    @ Responsa

Are Andrzejewski and the former President of Poland going to tell is that key to fixing the Illinois Economy is more trade with Poland??? That is pure genius.

  177. - Anonymous - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 10:42 pm:

I was at the Axelrod b-fast this morning and it looked to me like Quinn was struggling to stay awake. His seat was at the front of the room, just below the podium and he looked to be nodding off. If he’s eating McD’s twice a day and not sleeping, his campaign staff need to better manage him.

  178. - Responsa - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 10:46 pm:

Irish, I don’t have any connections into the Andrzejewski campaign, but you have to admit there are a lot of voters of Polish extraction in Illinois.

  179. - Chicago Law Student - Monday, Jan 25, 10 @ 11:37 pm:

Just finished watching on dvr. I really appreciate this discussion, Rich. I disagree with anyone who claims Hynes had a knock out punch. Though I have already voted for Hynes - the Gov. did look better than he has in over month. My vote was based on a lack of competence from the Gov. - and I still don’t think the Gov. addressed his issues with the release program or fumigation adequately. I am seriously concerned with electability in the general - the Gov. did not address his vulnerabilities. He wouldn’t even acknowledge a weakness. It will be a serious problem in the fall. Therefore, the Gov. might have won this battle - but def. will not win the war.

  180. - North Side Novice - Tuesday, Jan 26, 10 @ 7:55 am:

I, too, was at the Misericordia breakfast. I didn’t think the governor looked as tired as a previous blogger portrayed. The more interesting story is the number of empty seats in the room. Last year you couldn’t get in; this year it was far from a sell-out. Axelrod’s message was bland if indeed there was a message at all. Like the president, he’s lost touch with what’s on our minds.

  181. - Cindy Lou - Tuesday, Jan 26, 10 @ 8:31 am:

Are you all really going to ‘debate’ now how one should perceive a look or body language and outforward apperances? Who cares if ‘you’ think Quinn looks tired vs somebody else who does not think so? Almost appears to be nodding off, looks tired, did well, did lousy…it’s all in the eye of the viewer and their take on it.

McDonalds twice a day, Quinn, what the heck are you thinking? A personal tip, pack yourself a nice healthy lunch.
