Your afternoon assignment: Live blog the WVON “debate”

Thursday, Jan 28, 2010 - Posted by Rich Miller

* As I told you earlier, Gov. Quinn and Comptroller Hynes will be on Cliff Kelley’s always entertaining WVON talk show today at 4 o’clock. Topics will surely include Hynes’ Harold Washington TV ad and his Barack Obama mailer. Listen live on your computer by clicking here.

WVON’s Webcasts have had overload problems in the past, so if you’re in Chicago, tune your radio to 1690 AM. We’ll need your help live-blogging in comments if the station’s Intertubes overload. And even if they don’t.

Commenter live-blogging has been some of the best stuff we’ve done here in a while. So, have some fun.

…And here we go. The ads and news appear to be over. Have at it, folks.

…We’re done. Consensus in comments and by me is that Hynes got his clock cleaned. A really poor job. Yes, it was an unfair debate situation, but he surely knew that going in. I did. We’ll see what sort of coverage this gets.

Hynes didn’t just do badly, Quinn did very, very well. Where has that Pat Quinn been for the last six months?

Rep. Andre Thapedi’s WVON ad is pretty smoothe. Andre, Andre, Andre Thapedi….

  2. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 3:32 pm:

The most interesting thing will be if they take listener phone calls. Those can be brutal. I was on Cliff’s show once and… man.

  3. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 3:35 pm:

Good Hynes commercial about Quinn exploiting Burr Oak and defending the Washington ad.

  4. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 3:35 pm:

I need to listen to VON more. Hynes has a radio ad that says “Shame on you, Pat Quinn,” referring to Harold Washington firing him and Quinn’s Burr Oak ads.

  5. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 3:48 pm:

Is it already overloaded? I cant’ seem to get on…

  6. - Montrose - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 3:49 pm:

It seems you need to download a special program to listen, and I can’t download it at work.

Thank god for the live blogging.

  7. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 3:51 pm:

It’s working for me. Try a Firefox browser.

  8. - Burrito Bandit - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 3:56 pm:

This is going to be a good fireworks show. Thanks Rich.

  9. - dave - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 3:59 pm:

Even with Firefox you need to install Microsoft Silverlight.

    Calling in could be fun…

  10. - been there - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:03 pm:

yep. Cliff’s going to take calls.

  11. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:06 pm:

Cliff also said they have already received many questions via e-mail and will continue to take online questions throughout the debate.

Jerry “The Iceman” Butler endorses Commissioner Sims! Yes!!!

  13. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:13 pm:

    Here we go, kids…

  14. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:15 pm:

Guv wins coin toss, gets first opening remark. Says he’s been listening to WVON since 1963. Talks Ford, high speed rail, jobs.

  15. - shore - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:18 pm:

is it confirmed there is no tape of the hynes bashing washington in 1988 teevee commercial?

  16. - Reformer - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:19 pm:

Quinn hit the 3rd airport question out of the park.

  17. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:19 pm:

Quinn talks about how Emil Jones is “with me” because he can “get the job done” on economic growth. Quinn finally gets it, but we’re awfully close to election day for this mental awakening.

  18. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:20 pm:

Quinn worked in most of his prominant African American elected official endorsements. great job!

  19. - Anonymiss - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:21 pm:

Honestly, Quinn is as likable a guy as they come. He’s the kind of guy I want to play cards with. But lord, I don’t want to give him the keys to our state, not on purpose this time. Just listening to him in the first 5 minutes of this interview - sheesh. Remember that one town hall meeting in the round with Obama and McCain, where McCain just started wandering around in front of the camera, meandering aimlessly? Yeah, he’s kind of like that.

  20. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:21 pm:

Jesse White doing radio ads for Walter Burnett’s wife, who is running for Congress. Interesting.

  21. - So IL Student - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:22 pm:

Hynes and Quinn support third airport… Hynes gives substantive answer, but Quinn goes off on how many contacts he has and how everyone “likes” him instead of his approach to the airport.

  22. - anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:22 pm:

Quinn’s certainly trying to appeal to the African American community with that list of African American’s who are supporting him. Just answer the question Pat.

  23. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:24 pm:

So far, I’m learning more from the political ads than the debate. Of course, I’ve heard more ads than the debate since 4 o’clock.

At least I know now where the hole in the coverage has been. Live and learn.

  24. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:26 pm:

Starting on state budget — now the fun begins. Lets see if anyone answers the question, or just attacks the other person.

  25. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:26 pm:

    lol.

  26. - wndycty - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:26 pm:

As a regular WVON listener I pray that they play Rickey Hendon’s ad, its pure comedy.

  27. - Reformer - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:27 pm:

Alderman Walter Burnett is White’s alderman.

  28. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:28 pm:

Quinn: We need “tax reform” to pay for everything — no more cutting the budget. I support Meeks plan.

  29. - dave - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:28 pm:

I could do without the name dropping, but this is the strongest I have heard Quinn in any “debate.”

    Very good answer on taxes/budget.

  30. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:29 pm:

Quinn talks about how he cut his own pay, imposed furloughs, including on himself, praised Obama for sending federal money, praised Rev. Sen. Meeks for passing a tax hike bill that passed the Senate (that he flip-flopped against a day later, btw), talked about how he talked to Rev. Meeks this morning, who’s in Haiti. Drops Rev. jesse Jackson, Sr.’s name, mentions Haiti, mentions not forgetting people in need. “I support that (Meeks bill) my opponent does not.”

Said he called Mike Madigan “one minute” after the bill passed the Senate. Said he testified with David Miller. Didn’t say he then turned against the bill.

    Quite a proficient name-dropper, however.

  31. - Big Policy Nerd - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:29 pm:

Question is about the budget and the need for tax increases. Quinn mentions about three times each that he has support from the Reverend Senator Meeks, Jesse Jackson Sr and Jesse Jackson Jr. Quinn says Hynes wasn’t there for Budget debate.

  32. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:29 pm:

Hynes: We both agree we can’t “cut our way out.” State does need more money. Here’s where we differ — states his plan. Gov’s plan, or plans, all increase taxes on middle class. Wrong way. My way is better.

  33. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:30 pm:

Hynes flat out lies when it comes to Quinn’s tax position. Quinn’s introduced plan had reductions for the middle class. Hynes talks about the progressive tax as if he can get it done easily

  34. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:30 pm:

Actually, reformer, White is Ald. Burnett’s committeeman. lol

  35. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:30 pm:

Quinn is about to tee off on Hynes’ plan

  36. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:31 pm:

Hynes speaking in halting voice, stumbling over words. Not much new. Not sure he understands radio much. It sure is showing.

  37. - So IL Student - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:31 pm:

Constitutional Amendment not take a long time?? It is the beauty of the income tax reform? Wow… how far from reality are we Dan?

  38. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:31 pm:

Quinn: If no tax increase, 17,000 teachers will be laid off.

    Can anyone verify this?

  39. - Reformer - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:31 pm:

The Meeks bill is a litmus test that Quinn passes.

Hynes claims he’ll get the legislature to put his amendment on the ballot this year. He doesn’t mention how he’ll convince any House Republicans to vote for it by the May deadline.

  40. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:32 pm:

Quinn: Hynes’ proposal “sounds good if you say it fast.” “The comptroller doesn’t have a plan.”

Where was this Pat Quinn a month ago?

…And yet another ad break. Plus, traffic and weather.

  41. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:32 pm:

LOL Quinn. How many more times can you say Meeks’ name. Talk about pandering.

  42. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:33 pm:

    That stuff works, WCW.

  43. - Big Policy Nerd - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:33 pm:

“The Governor” of Talk Radio Cliff Kelly pushes Hynes on his constitutional amendment. Hynes admits that it won’t kick in until 2011. Cliff Kelly apparently attended a state constitutional convention once. Quinn brings up the Reverend Senator Meeks again…Ooo an ad from Congressman Danny Davis endorsing Dorothy Brown. Gotta love Danny Davis’ voice. Dorothy Brown claims to “talk the talk and walk the walk.” Nice!

  44. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:33 pm:

Quinn just handed it to Hynes on getting a constitutional amendment. Quinn has actually done it. Hynes has done nothing as an adult except be comptroller. Point Quinn on the tax issue, but they are coming back to it after the commercial, so Quinn could earn more points.

He is on today, feeling confident at WVON. Hynes on the other hand is not so comfortable.

  45. - Anonymiss - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:33 pm:

I could listen to Danny Davis read the phone book, but even he can’t make Dorothy Brown sound good. And it should’ve ended, “Paid for Casual-Friday Employees of Dorothy Brown.”

  46. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:33 pm:

Give Quinn credit, he knows the audience he’s talking to and he knows how radio works.

  47. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:34 pm:

Here’s what we know for sure: WVON is making serious cash on these political ads.

  48. - Really - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:34 pm:

I understand that Quinn is trying to get his point across but really ?Quinn’s constant cutting off of the moderator just to make his point is getting a little annoying. In the last three minutes I heard 4 or 5 times when Quinn kept on rambling when the moderator tried to step in.

  49. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:34 pm:

unclesam, you’re right on both points.

  50. - Burrito Bandit - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:36 pm:

These ads are great… Todd Stroger keeps people in their houses and Todd Stroger also gets you free medical care. Thanks Todd!

  51. - So IL Student - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:36 pm:

“David E. Miller, Dentist”…. Very nice. Appeal to the ‘I hate proffessional politicians’ side of the electorate. Nice ad.

  52. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:36 pm:

===Cliff Kelly apparently attended a state constitutional convention once.===

Cliff Kelley was a delegate to the last Con-Con.

  53. - chitownhv - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:37 pm:

“Hynes” and “pep rally” just don’t go together.

  54. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:38 pm:

Now Quinn is aligining himself with President Obama. He is KILLING!

  55. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:38 pm:

Hynes: My plan will erase deficit in 3 yrs., details and facts are important, and my plan does not harm the middle class.

“We’re getting no action from the Governor.”

Kelly: Sounds like same criticism of Obama.

Quinn: Obama and I are pals, work well together, and are getting people to work.

  56. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:39 pm:

    Quinn brought his game.

  57. - Really - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:39 pm:

Quinn : ” Just today we got 1.2 billion dollars…that’s a lot of money! ” lol

  58. - So IL Student - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:39 pm:

Quinn: “he (President Obama) was happy I was Governor”

More likely he was just happy your last name wasn’t Blagojevich.

  59. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:39 pm:

Hynes: Is anyone keeping track of the number of names that the Governor is dropping?”

Hynes just killed himself. Bad move.

  60. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:40 pm:

here we go with teh washington stuff. lets see how hynes handles it

  61. - Reformer - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:40 pm:

The Defender endorsement! The Mighty Quinn is loaded for bear.

  62. - So IL Student - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:40 pm:

Dan called Quinn on “name dropping”

  63. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:40 pm:

    Pullman Porters. Defender.

  64. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:40 pm:

Hynes: Details do matter and so do facts. Deficit has grown from 9bil to 13bil in one year. We have the second worst deficit in the country.

Kelley interrupts and says “This sounds like the same thing they say about Obama.” Oof. Quinn immediately agrees, showers effusive praise on the preznit, repeats Obama’s name a kabillion times. “When you have people running you down, this doesn’t solve the problem.” Drops Meeks’ names again.

Hynes cracks a joke about how many names Quinn is dropping. Quinn interrupts and says “How about the Chicago Defender. They endorsed me today.” Recounts history of Defender.

Hynes is getting his hat handed to him.

  65. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:41 pm:

And here comes the Harold Washington ad question. Framed very negatively against Hynes.

  66. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:41 pm:

Moving on to Harold Washington ad discussion. Many callers/listeners have negative reaction.

Hynes: His words are powerful, clear and he spoke of Quinn’s incompenency. It’s relevant because it’s still true today about Quinn’s performance thus far.

  67. - Big Policy Nerd - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:41 pm:

Hynes gets mad about the number of African-American elected officials that Pat Quinn keeps mentioning who support him. Hynes asks the listeners if anyone is counting how many times Pat Quinn brings up African-American leaders who support him. Quinn responds by talking about today’s Chicago Defender Endorsement.

  68. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:42 pm:

Can white men not run against black men in political elections?

  69. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:42 pm:

Cliff is rope a doping hynes

  70. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:42 pm:

Simply Quinn’s best performance at a debate yet. I’m with Rich, where has this Quinn been?

  71. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:42 pm:

Hynes is getting popped by Cliff Kelley almost as harshly as by Quinn.

  72. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:42 pm:

Hynes stumbles over his words in explaining. Standard response. Kelley interrupts, “That was long ago… 20 years ago… You were in the commercials when he was attacking Mayor Washington.”

“Right,” said Hynes, “I loved my father, I supported my father…”

  73. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:42 pm:

It is becoming very apparent that the debate host has a pro-Quinn bias. The interview is not neutral.

Very poor in my opinion. He should frame all questions as neutral as possible.

  74. - Really - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:43 pm:

This moderator seems to be pretty one sided on this debate

  75. - dave - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:43 pm:

**Can white men not run against black men in political elections? **

    Huh? Are you serious?

  76. - Ben - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:43 pm:

Does this whole show get replayed or posted online?

  77. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:44 pm:

My god, somebody throw in the towel. Hynes is bleeding profusely!

  78. - A Citizen - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:44 pm:

Thank goodness the two White Irish Guys have transcended Race.

  79. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:44 pm:

Quinn: “This is a divisive commercial. He knows it. He knows it.” Drops Bobby Kennedy’s name, Dr. King’s name. “It was those 18 year olds who elected Barack Obama in 2008. You make up your own mind… I voted for Harold Washington. I worked for Harold Washington in every single election… His father called Harold Washington sleazy.”

  80. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:45 pm:

“Mr. Hynes over here ought to be ashamed of himself… He never, ever voted for Harold Washington.”

  81. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:45 pm:

Bad response to Quinn hynes. Terrible!

  82. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:45 pm:

Hynes “we’re not trying to be divise” after Quinn gave the entire history of Tom Hynes going after Mayor Washington.

This is a bloodbath. What was Hynes thinking?

  83. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:46 pm:

Hynes continues to stammer. Gets interrupted again by Kelley more than once. Cliff is getting peeved.

Who advised Dan Hynes go on that show? lol

  84. - DJ - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:46 pm:

When was this interview scheduled? Kelley seems like he’s joining Quinn’s “shame on you Dan” chorus.

  85. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:46 pm:

Quinn lives on the most integrated block in Chicago, apparently.

  86. - Big Policy Nerd - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:47 pm:

Pat Quinn: “I would rather lose an election for Governor than divide people over race.”

  87. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:47 pm:

Wonder if cameras from the TV stations are there?

  88. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:47 pm:

Quinn is rambling on and on and on. Not sure why Kelly isn’t keeping control.

  89. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:47 pm:

Quinn: “I’d rather lose the race for governor than divide the people along the lines of race.” Goes back to creating jobs. Ford. “Please don’t listen to this divisive negative attack on me.” CUB. Fighting currency exchanges. “My opponent is on the campaign money payroll of the currency exchanges.”

  90. - Tom - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:47 pm:

Hynes should not have taken the invite to be on this show…he sounds weak. This is the first Hynes campaign screw up all month.

  91. - Just wondering - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:48 pm:

How many names is Quinn going to drop?

  92. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:48 pm:

Bad, Hynes. He’s just not hitting it.

  93. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:48 pm:

Well, this should be a lesson in how to produce a very biased debate discussion.

    Shame on Cliff Kelly.

  94. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:49 pm:

Quinn should have said this in a TV ad, or at least a radio ad geared to black radio:
“I’d rather lose the race for governor than divide the people along the lines of race.”

  95. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:49 pm:

Quinn “in 11 years, Dan hasnt created 1 job. I created 1200 the other day.” This is beautiful. What was dan thinking?

  96. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:49 pm:

=== The interview is not neutral.===

    LOL

Apparently, you are a first-time listener to Chris Kelley’s show.

  97. - Montrose - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:49 pm:

unclesam - did you actually think Cliff was going to be unbiased?

  98. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:50 pm:

    Hey, Will Burns name drop!

  99. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:50 pm:

I dont think WVON comes in in the 19th ward. Apparently somebody on the hynes campaign thought that Cliff Kelley was a white irish guy who worked for his father.

  100. - Wondering... - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:50 pm:

Not sure why my previous comment was deleted… it goes to the gross level of pandering Quinn is doing here.

That said, Hynes is so ill prepared it isn’t even funny. I agree with those who have asked, what was he thinking even doing this?

  101. - Juice - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:50 pm:

    Wrong Kelly there Rich.

  102. - dave - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:50 pm:

Even if it isn’t neutral, this still is by far the best I have heard from Quinn.

  103. - Reformer - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:50 pm:

This performance should win Quinn the WVON vote.

  104. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:50 pm:

Dropping more names now, White, Davis, Rush, the Jackson’s, Will Burns. Praises Burns for weatherization. “Make sure there’s local jobs in every neighborhood.” Kwame Raoul, Haiti. Another ad break.

  105. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:50 pm:

More name-dropping by Quinn — included Rep. Burns, Sen. Raoul and IL Black Caucus.

    Gone to break.

Has Hynes tried to mention Ald. Burke “loans?”

  106. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:50 pm:

Kwame Raoul…and the people of Haiti!

  107. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:51 pm:

Line of the day to Anon: “I dont think WVON comes in in the 19th ward. Apparently somebody on the hynes campaign thought that Cliff Kelley was a white irish guy who worked for his father.”

  108. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:51 pm:

I think Hynes was right to do this, but he should been preped better. Whomever on his staff was working with him on this failed.

  109. - Reformer - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:52 pm:

It’s apparent that Quinn has been working on the black vote for decades, far longer than Hynes.

  110. - HiFi - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:52 pm:

Quinn’s name dropping is starting to sound patronizing.

  111. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:53 pm:

thanks. I’m not normally witty to get a shout out, but this debate has me in a great mood. I love hearing Dan squirm.

  112. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:53 pm:

    Rickey Hendon’s ad.

    Hilarious.

I need to get a copy of that one.

  113. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:53 pm:

That Hendon ad is the best political ad I’ve ever heard! I’ll take a slice!

  114. - been there - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:53 pm:

    there’s that Rickey Hendon ad!

  115. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:54 pm:

He is sure to offend the handful of African-Americans he hasn’t name-dropped yet. Should be moving into fictional characters like Bud Billiken soon…

Might want to leave out Minister Farrakhan and Rev. Wright though.

  116. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:54 pm:

I dont think that Quinn was working for the black vote for all those years. I think he is a guy who has spent an entire career fighting for causes he believes in. Big differece. Hynes is a calculating politician. Quinn is a advocate for good causes.

  117. - Burrito Bandit - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:54 pm:

Pat Quinn talking about how people who have been working in the community support him. Will Burns and kwame Rauol are with Quinn. Rickey Hendon has an ad up about how he is going to stop 10,000 more red-light cameras.

  118. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:54 pm:

Has Hynes tried to mention Ald. Burke “loans?”

He was starting to but in a hushed way. he better work it in before the show is over. The show is almost over and Hynes has not done well. I think he’s thinking this works like tv, but it doesn’t.

people don’t see quinn acting boorish, they hear him being passionate.

  119. - anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:54 pm:

I admire Hynes for walking into the firing line. That show’s courage. Frankly, Quinn’s blatant racial pandering is insulting. This is why I don’t like Quinn. He’ll say anything to anybody to make them happy.

  120. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:55 pm:

“The Governor of Talk Radio.” AA likes that.

The Leak & Sons funeral home commercial was more informative than most of Quinn’s bluster.

Loved Hendon’s commercial. “H*** with the rest of ‘em. I’m voting for Rickey Hendon!”

  121. - Big Policy Nerd - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:56 pm:

How long does this go for? I thought we were going to get callers? Hynes better not hope for a Burr Oak question…This is good stuff.

  122. - f.t.a. - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:56 pm:

Thought Quinn missed an opening when they talked about Hynes’ tenure as Comp. Attacked him for not creating jobs. Why not attacking him for having ONLY two duties: cutting checks for the state and regulating cemeteries — one’s a no-brainer and the other he’s screwed up.

  123. - DemVOTER - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:56 pm:

Dang I wish I could hear this…missing all the Fun. …They should set up a transmiter here in McHenry County..

  124. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:57 pm:

Quinn says his predecessor’s appointments are “good people.” He’ll have to answer for that one.

  125. - So IL Student - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:57 pm:

Cliff - How many African americans do you plan on having in your admin….

He is just feeding Quinn now

  126. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:57 pm:

Damon Arnold has not done a good job overseeing nursing homes obviously.

  127. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:57 pm:

Actually watching Quinn over the years, I’d say he’s as calculating as the rest, he’s just calculated that the way to advance politically is to jump on a bunch of populist causes.

  128. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:57 pm:

I’ve been listening to the radio show and Pat Quinn sounds very rude. He is the one who is Negative.

  129. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:57 pm:

I’d love to see Andy Shaw or Jack Conaty let loose like CLiff Kelly at some debate, instead of the same old tired format. This is much more fun!

  130. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:57 pm:

Pat Quinn unveils slogan for the stretch run: “Everyone In, No One Left Out.”

This is now the 20th mention.

  131. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:58 pm:

== Quinn’s blatant racial pandering is insulting. ==

    LOL.

And Hynes accusing Quinn of wanting to raise taxes on the middle class isn’t?

Better yet, ask Hynes why his Harold Washington radio ads and t.v. ads are only running before “select” audiences.

  132. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:58 pm:

Hynes speaking about importance of diversity, but there’s no blood there.

  133. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:58 pm:

I’ve been listening to the radio show and Pat Quinn sounds very rude. He is the one who is Negative.

Are we listening to the same debate?

Here comes the HYnes pandering. With a young african american who was trying to start a business.

  135. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:59 pm:

Prediction: Quinn unloads the Burr Oak issue in his one minute close.

  136. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:59 pm:

Quinn is hammering HYnes for saying that Obama just wanted a piece of pork pie. Hynes got clobbered

  137. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:00 pm:

“OK, folks, don’t be fooled by my opponent. He ran down Barack Obama… Don’t pay any attention to false, negative attacks… ” Drops more names. White, Jackson’s, Emil Jones, etc. “Don’t listen to divisive commercials, listen to your own heart.”

  138. - So IL Student - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:00 pm:

Seriously, how much will an endorsement by Emil Jones help?

  139. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:00 pm:

From this radio talk show This has TOTALLY confirmed by decision to vote for HYNES!!!!!

  140. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:00 pm:

Anyone know if TV cameras are in the studio?

  141. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:00 pm:

Wow. He did not mention Burr Oak.

Guess he had to read the roster again.

  142. - Radio Daze - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:01 pm:

Although Quinn appears to be doing well — who’s listening. Yes, I know that Cliff has a following in the African-American community, but the reality is the numbers don’t support it. His show is not even the highest ranking show on his station.

Also, do we honeslty believe that people are gathered around their radios listening? TV ads work, radio debates don’t.

  143. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:01 pm:

Done. I dount that even Blago would call this an up day for hynes

  144. - Big Policy Nerd - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:01 pm:

Hynes talks about how he met an African-American guy in a barbershop who wanted to start a taxi company. Hynes wants to work with that guy to get him the capital he needs to start his taxi business. Quinn closes by talking about his support from African-American elected officials, tells people not to believe Hynes ads.

  145. - Niles Township - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:01 pm:

Quinn left Hynes at the starting line at this debate.

  146. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:02 pm:

    Quinn won that “debate.”

  147. - anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:02 pm:

Um, one of Quinn’s plans was a full tax hike on the middle class. When he couldn’t get though his first plan, he gave up on the deductions and went for the full hit. Hynes has used that fact very effectively in the campaign.

  148. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:03 pm:

Quinn has a “director of ‘fair’ contracts.” ?

Hynes’ A/A staffing numbers are pretty good, but Quinn just steamrolled him before/after.

Quinn gets in a strong closer-Hynes nothing.

To the extent this event means anything in the big picture, AA would call it as a blowout for PQ.

  149. - anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:04 pm:

Quinn wins that round, but he had a big assist from Kelly. That was easy pickings for Quinn.

  150. - JonShibleyFan - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:04 pm:

I think it’s a safe bet Dan Hynes won’t be included on the 2010 Soul Slate.

  151. - Knome Sane - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:04 pm:

While Quinn may get some licks in on Dan, the election isn’t decided by who wins this debate.

I know, I know, this could help Quinn stanch the bleeding from the Washington ad, but this will be a low turnout, even in the African American community and Hynes drew blood with that ad, no ifs, ands or buts…..

  152. - Burl Ives - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:05 pm:

. . . brrr I am glad that’s at an end. If Hynes doesn’t show up, he’s teed of on for an hour with no reply. It was a rope-a-dope alright, but he had to do it and stay in the ring. He’s bloody, but he’s got tomorrow and all weekend to let Harold do his talking for those who missed the show.

  153. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:08 pm:

Low turnout in the AA community? Really? Do you have any idea what is going on in Cook county, not to mention that we have an AA female running for u.s. Senate and two african americans running for lt. gov, an african american running for comptroller, and an african american woman running for treasurer. if you think AA turnout will be low, you have a screw loose.

  154. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:08 pm:

I didn’t mean to suggest anything that sounded racist about that getting into an argument with a black person post.

I was thinking of MTVs Real World New York (the very 1st real world) two of housemates got into an argument and the white female asked the black guy why he was shouting. he said that’s how black talk/argue we get loud.

with quinn is was not so much what he was saying. it was how he said it. he said it forcefully.

I don;t think that its because quinn has had so much experience with black people, I think he’s just more of a people person than dan hynes. he’s a community organizer type which means he’s been out and about more and he has considerable experience screaming and shouting about things generally speaking. Look at his time as a political activist (e.g., CUB etc)

Hynes is very much like Obama stiff and cerebral. The knock against Obama was that he came off as too professorial during debates and too upper crust. Unless it’s WBEZ or other public radio, that doesn’t work on radio too well.

  155. - Big Policy Nerd - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:08 pm:

Holy Smokes. Jesse Jackson Jr has a radio ad for Pat Quinn. Jesse Jackson Junior says Hynes has no plan and no vision for the future. Jesse Jackson Jr speaks the whole time during the ad. Rips Hynes.

  156. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:09 pm:

Hynes wasn’t prepared and didn’t come off well. That said, I question more the decision to go on and do this “debate” with Mr. Kelley as the so-called “moderator.” Should’ve insisted on someone who would play it down the middle and let the candidates battle it out on their own terms or not done it at all. I’m no Hynes fan, but what I heard sounded like 2 on 1 for a while there.

  157. - Arthur Andersen - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:09 pm:

Quinn jumped out from the start like a Camry with a bad gas pedal and never stopped.

  158. - Anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:09 pm:

Rich, do you know if WVON would have transcripts of this show available?

  159. - Knome Sane - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:11 pm:

Anon: 5:08, turnout in the African American community won’t top 16%. And that’s about what it will be statewide. Cheryle Jackson, the Cook County Board race, etc, won’t be enough to overcome a snowy Tuesday in early February, pray as hard as you might to the contrary.

  160. - Wondering... - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:13 pm:

Anyone know what Cliff Kelley’s listenership is?

  161. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:13 pm:

Quinn’s name dropping was all i heard in this debate and if the voters really care about what is best for our state and our children they will vote for Hynes. Kelly is obviously a PQ supporter and fed into Quinn, but I’m glad that Hynes did this because if people really listened carefully Illinois needs a change and as a mother I want my children to have a better future, therefore, I hope people really realize the fact that PQ had one year to help our state out and he hasn’t from what i’ve seen personally. When i go to the polls on tuesday my children will be on my mind and in my heart when i vote for Hynes.

  162. - Louis Howe - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:13 pm:

I don’t understand why Hynes staff agreed to this “debate.” Quinn’s has the ability to provide jobs and contracts and has the majority prominent black pols.

  163. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:15 pm:

Radio Daze you are 100 percent correct. If I’m Hynes I don’t lose any sleep. But if I survive Tuesday, I add radio discussion/debate technique to my list of things to improve upon.

Let’s not read too much into the black vote and cook county board. If they hear that todd isn’t doing well, about that someone else black is, I suspect many will be happy with that. If this were a two person race white against black and close then yes I could see people going out of their way to come out to vote.

is there competition for votes between dorothy and toni for the black vote? I think it’s safe to conclude that todd is a non-factor, as many blacks are happy to see him go. anybody but that white guy and todd is the impression i get.

  164. - Streeterville Snooks - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:17 pm:

I’m really disgusted by Quinn. As an African-American it’s insulting to me that Quinn would try to convince me that Hynes’ ad about Quinn’s competence is actually about race. There is nothing racial or racist about that ad.
I understand the history and the irony of somemone named Hynes running such an ad. But that doesn’t change the fact that the ad is an accurate indictment of Quinn’s short-comings; past and present.
Quinn’s shameless racial pandering in this interview is equally disgusting. I don’t want to know which African-American politicians support you, I want to know your plan to fix the state’s economic problems. It’s now apparent to me you don’t have one. I won’t be voting for Quinn on Tuesday. Not sure if Hynes will get my vote.

  165. - unclesam - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:17 pm:

Kelley now will take listener calls responding to the “debate.” Kelley is now defending Quinn’s tax plan. Again, disappointing. Most people expect these types of events to be, for the most part, “neutral” in tone and tenor. That never happened. Terrible.

  166. - Burrito Bandit - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:21 pm:

Pat Quinn needs to be all over the African-American churches this weekend. Hynes was lucky the Burr Oak question didn’t come up. Hynes wasn’t comfortable with this Listening audience and it showed.

  167. - Burl Ives - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:22 pm:

Hynes was lucky to have 2 African American votes a month ago and I never believed his numbers came close to what recent polls had him in the AA community. All he needs to do is hang tough, not get crushed, and win by ONE vote on election day. It amazes me that Quinn’s people act like they’ve accomplished something when they blew a 20 pt lead as the incumbent Democrat after cutting every deal possible with every Dem hanger-on out there. Hynes has run a campaign. Quinn has simply run not to lose.

  168. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:24 pm:

    - dave - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 4:43 pm:

**Can white men not run against black men in political elections? **

    Huh? Are you serious?
    ________________________

LOL! I asked that because Quinn and kelly seemed to take offense, in the tone of their voices, that Tom Hynes ran against Washington and that Dan Hynes ran against Obama.

  169. - dave - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:31 pm:

WCW… you sure have a strange way of interpreting pretty much everything.

  170. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:34 pm:

No. I don’t. You’re just a quinn supporter you’re automatically going to have a problem.

  171. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:35 pm:

    Yes, you do.

  172. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:45 pm:

I disagree with you, but that’s neither here nor there.

Kelly is really talking quinn up to his listerners. He reminds a listener that Quinn has been at the station many times, whereas he believes this was the first and only time for Hynes. The caller wants to volunteer for Quinn and Kelly is happy to oblige.

    LOL.

  173. - Will County Woman - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:47 pm:

Some of the post discussion calls must be Quinn people because it seems a little fishy and slanted in his favor post show.

  174. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:57 pm:

    Rich

I will be bringing an Emergency Motion relating to the Office of State Comptroller tomorrow morning in Skokie.

On Wednesday I was advised that the Office of Comptroller was processing EFT [electronic funds transfer] affecting my state back pay and USA v Miriam Santos - which was supposed to be completed today.

The Hynes people in the Office of Comptroller HAVE directly lied to me about the funds transfer - and I am an officer of the court.

Therefore, I will be asking the local judge for entry of a Writ of mandamus [the performance of a ministerial act that I have been authorized to obtain by Chief Judge Holderman].

I am also be pursuing a Rule to Show Cause to Hold the Office of State Comptroller in civil contempt of court on this issue - since the Office of State Treasurer has fully complied with the court order[s] and lawfully issued subpoena.

    Sincerely

    VICTOR M. CROWN

  175. - Rambler - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 5:58 pm:

Just got home. Sounds like unclesam has no idea about how Cliff Kelley’s show operates. If Hynes went in there thinking this was going to be impartial then he definitely doesn’t deserve to be Gov. Do a little homework.

Also, Anon 4:50, I’m still laughing!

  176. - Knome Sane - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:03 pm:

VICTOR M. CROWN, what in sam hill are you talking about? Writ of Whaaa? Rule to Show Huh?

What you fail to realize is that this drives conversation. Quinn can’t make a commercial calling the ads racist, but he can get other people to do it for him. People did listen tell their friends. That’s the way things work.

Hynes has stupid for not releasing the ad this week. Quinn has had time to push back, and push back hard.

  180. - HUH - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:23 pm:

That debate was so slanted! Yes quinn did well but could cliff kelly been anymore in the bag for Quinn? I think Hynes will still win this primary.

  181. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 6:42 pm:

Mr. Hynes’ staff has lied to me regarding its compliance with a court order and I am going to hold them accountable for this.. I have a court order relating to a default judgment on state back pay and Mr. Hynes and the Comptroller’s office is not complying with the court.

    simply put.. victor crown

  182. - radio daze - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 7:07 pm:

Little Lebowski Urban Achiever, i have to disagree. The real world is nothing like us - they don’t talk about the governor’s race. That’s not the topic of conversation for “regular” folks.

We devour this stuff and talk about it ad nauseam - i just don’t think everyone else does. I can’t remember ever anyone (non politico that is) saying to me, “did you hear that debate the other day.”

Some will tell their friends, those who heard it, but i just don’t think it’s going to be water cooler talk in the African American community.

(this from a white guy, of course!)

  183. - anon - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 7:24 pm:

i guess Quinn just forgot about his endorsements and money from Burke and Mell.

  184. - wordslinger - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 7:37 pm:

Hynes’ couldn’t have ducked this one if he wanted to. I think McKenna exhausted all the “ducking” options available to candidates. Hynes will not be charged with a timeout.

  185. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 7:50 pm:

It doesn’t matter what Quinn’s relationships are regarding anyone - we cannot have a Comptroller and affected staff who lies or misleads and fails to comply with a lawfully issued order or lawful subpoena.. this is how obstruction of justice occurs.. victor crown

  186. - Whaaaa? - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 7:53 pm:

Victor Crown: one question: Who cares? Why is this an issue for debate on this blog? Good luck collecting on a default judgment. Is this entire race about what YOU can take from the state?

  187. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jan 28, 10 @ 7:57 pm:

The US Attorney cares and so do a number of local and federal judges who have entered the orders that I have legally obtained.

I’ve never taken any money from the State.. This issue is not about money.. its about the failure of the Office of State Comptroller to comply with the law.. and fulfill its statutory duties.

And that is an issue which goes to Mr. Hynes competence..as it were.

    Victor Crown

  188. - VanillaMan - Friday, Jan 29, 10 @ 9:21 am:

    There you have it.
Quinn has the AA vote bloc.
    Is that enough?
It will depend upon voter turnout.

Hynes will take the collar counties.
    Quinn takes the City.
Downstate will be the determining factor in this race, and both guys are equally liked.

Chicago’s weather forecast shows a 30% possibility of snow, and temps around freezing. A typical Chicago February day, in other words.

When the Primary was shoved into early February, I wonder who considered the effect weather could have on the Democratic Primary. Not all of Cook County can easily move around snow, ice and cold. Anyone depending upon the South Side, is going to have to ensure that the weather doesn’t effect turnout from that part of the City.

If we get enough snow to make moving a hassle, it will be an even bigger hassle for South Siders to get to the polls.

So, this Primary date is one blizzard away from being shoved back to a later month of the year.
