  7. - Montrose - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 2:20 pm:

I had the exact same question as Peter Snarker.

  8. - Peter Snarker - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 2:43 pm:

If Wilco doesnt count I’ve enjoyed Vance Kelly for as long as I can remember.

Rich, I am going to use this chance to thank you for promoting Tom Irwin’s new project a few months back. I chipped in on his Kickstarter and anxiously await my package when it is all available. I’m sure I am not the only daily reader who liked his efforts and decided to help him out!

    rock-afire explosion!!!

    Showbiz FOREVER!!!!

  11. - quicknote - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 2:53 pm:

JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound. Check out their cover of Wilco’s “I am trying to break your heart.” Genius.

  12. - Sully - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 2:53 pm:

The Emerald Underground plays at the Sullivan Caucus every year and they are great!!

  13. - Small Town Liberal - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 2:57 pm:

For Springfield, anything involving Joe Frew or Sarah Schneider is always fun. Of course Tom Irwin at Brewhaus on Sunday nights is great. Haven’t really picked a favorite local Chicago band yet, but I’d highly recommend the open mic nights at Gallery Cabaret in Bucktown. Lots of great musicians and cheap booze.

Is that place still open? Man, I had some great times there.

  15. - TCB - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 3:02 pm:

    @ Knome

Good choice. I’ll be at the 49er Saturday night for the Geech show. I’ll buy you a drink if you can figure out who I am :)

As for my favorite…I have to go with Still Kick’n given that I’m a huge country fan. They were better when they had a fiddle player, but they are still really good because they have Kelsey Hickman as the lead singer.

Honorable Mention to: Cpt. Geech & Inspected by Twelve

Sure is Rich, I was just there on Sunday. Free chili during football, $6 pitchers, free dinner buffet, and two open mic nights, all on Sundays. I can’t believe it took me almost a year to discover the place.

  18. - heet101 - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 3:08 pm:

Any ensemble or solo act that has Urbana’s own Nate Holley. Man that guy was awesome in King Solomon’s Grave back in college.

  19. - Fun(d)raiser - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 3:09 pm:

Does anybody remember Roger and the Ray-Bans? They played on the North Shore circa 2000. Also, Pork and the Havana Ducks were a great Downstate group.

  20. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 3:12 pm:

STL, you didn’t happen to notice if Scott Bailey played, did you? Old friend. Guitarist. He introduced me to that tavern.

  21. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 3:14 pm:

TCB, I may be there Saturday night as well. We’ll see how my weekend plays out.

I didn’t, but according to their website calendar he played earlier in the month. I’ll keep an eye out and check him out if I get a chance.

  24. - Peggy R/Southern - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 3:19 pm:

I’m a grown married mom. Haven’t been to clubs since grad school. I understand the Urge is still around STL. I followed the Unconscious in STL also. Wilco I think are Bville guys I might know brothers of…Uncle Tupelo was great back in the day too…

  27. - amalia - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 3:24 pm:

oh, it’s been ages since the looking for bands, but I’ll hit the way back machine and say the Del Crustaceans, a great party band. maybe someday Rick Telander will get the band back together and play a gig.

  28. - TCB - Friday, Jan 27, 12 @ 3:35 pm:

    @Rich

    I knew you’d be there….you’re the drummer, right? :)

    I joke….but there is a slight resemblance.

Agree with Libra, Hip Bone Sam is getting to be one of my favorites here in the Springfield area.

  42. - Wickedred - Sunday, Jan 29, 12 @ 11:59 am:

Weber Band from Chicago. Great funky beat and always a fantastic show when the Cosmic Unity Horns are with them.
From across the border in WI, Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo. Very tight three piece, dirty blues and swamp rock.

Ken Chaney Experience; Fusion Jazz (Chicago)
