Jason Plummer, the GOP’s newly minted 12th U.S. House District nominee, talked up his party’s prospects in the November general election during a unity breakfast Wednesday.
“It’s great to see a united Republican Party,” said Plummer at St. Clair County GOP headquarters a day after his win in the Tuesday primary race.
“It’s not just a united Republican Party,” said Plummer, of Fairview Heights. “But a growing Republican Party.” […]
Plummer, however, might not be able to count on the help of Rodger Cook, who finished second to Plummer in the three-way GOP contest.
Cook, after sharing a perfunctory handshake with Plummer Wednesday morning, said he still felt some hard feelings toward Plummer.

Plummer is a strong candidate in this part of the state. He mopped up the floor with Rodger Cook, defeating him by 28 points, and now this should be a pretty competitive general election.
Jesse Jr. tries to buy a Senate seat..has a personal scandal, wins by 20+ points and is “just jaw-dropping”
Jason doesn’t really show up very well on an interview with uber-hack Carol Marin and it’s a “disastrous” two years later when he wins by a 20+ margin.

Mr. Willy , did the Met’s Jack Ryan have an exclamation mark in his name, or do you have some weird and intentional “punctuation association” thing going on there?
I don’t the Republicans get very far by playing to what the DCCC wants to do. The voters wanted Jason and he won. Republican turnout was 44K. Democrat was 39K.
I think Jason can safely proceed without worrying too much about bunch of naying from negative nabobs.

I thkn you made my point … Jason can’t put together a thought and a sentence and wins by 20 points - That is shocking.
J-Trips wins by 40, after starting with a run for Congress and keeping a seat.
Junior didn’t run for LG, a heartbeat away from running the 5th largest state on his Daddy’s cash and interships as a resume …
Jason won by 20+ points because the voters are not real concerned what Carol Marin thinks about the candidates. They have some concept of the future of the country, rather than concerns with Carol’s media empire.

Am I confused … do you not think the interview(s) was/were bad? Sounds like you think the interviewer(s) are bad, but Jason was ok … again … maybe you do need to watch the interview again.
Oswego, that was really good, and nice of Rich to reward a longtime commenter with his own page. I am sure when phil ponce did that interview he said to himself 6 years ago I was moderating barack obama’s final senate primary debate and now I’ve got a 27 year old kid who was probably blacking out doing keg stands that night who can’t remember his talking points. Marin is definitely a lefty, but I think Phil Ponce has done a really really good job with debates over the years and was fair in that interview.

As a Metro East resident, I am ashamed to say that IF Jason Plummer wins in the fall, John Shimkus will no longer be the most naive, the most poorly informed, the goofiest member of this state’s congressional delegation. Plummer will make Shimkus look like The Thinker. And it’s a sad day when ANYONE makes Shimkus look sharp.
Plummer-thin skinned, arrogant, vindictive, condescending and, Oh, he can’t put two sentences together.
Look forward to more laughs and gaffs from Plummer in the future.
“What do you think was the reason I beat Cook … well, for one thing …’Rodger’ … the ‘d’ really spooked me… REALLY spooked me, serously… and when I was in the precincts I would ask, “Who puts a ‘d’ in ‘Rodger’, right? …Right? … so then .. um, I would say, ‘I don’t even have a ‘d’ in my first name, like ‘Jadson’ and then that was it, I became the congresman last night … uh … (softly) what? ….nominee congressman … like a Pledge in a fraternity I think ….(softly)right? … Yeah, but without eating goldfish … it was the ‘d’ in ‘Rodger’ …”
“I like campaigning, I like the parades … and the ice cream at the picnics, yes! … I get to dress up, that’s pretty cool. I get to read a whole bunch, out loud like in school … and I read it real loud and people listen … they just stop talking and I read.
Sometimes … it seems like I keep reading the same thing … over and over … blah, blah, blah … and people, they act like never heard me read, and they clap. Reminds me of school. So I like the campaigning.”
“I have a question for you, the press … this ‘trail’ … campaign ‘trail’ … I have gone up and down Illinois, and now I really was down here and stuff … and i can’t find a ‘trail’ for the campaign stuff … seriously … where is it…. didn no one tell me because the 1st time everyone was giving me a hard time …so I am doin’ it again … so where is that ‘campaign trail’ located?

“Yeah, Rodger had hard feelings, but he started it … this is my nomination and he made me spend my Dad’s hard earned money … and me like … do things … and I got mad … and this is mine … so he can just be mad … being a ‘congress candidate’ is real hard and he didn’t help me … “
“I don’t have to answer that question because, ‘a’ I didn’t study for it, ‘2′ you in the media will twist it like a celery stick, and ‘d’, Members of Congress do not handle ‘federal’ things like you said, we handle ‘NATIONAL’ things … you should know the difference.”
“I was told if I won, the Republican Party here wants me to spend as much time in Washington learning as possible … just stay there in DC and learn … can’t learn about congress-suff in Illinois, they say, so they have been telling me alot ‘get out to DC’ … which is good.”
I think ABC-7’s Charles Thomas put it best when he said if Jason was a Democrat the media would be bending over backward to say what a treasure it is to have a young man serve his country in the Navy and in political office.
Run as a Republican and you get the peanut gallery shooting spitwads at you for doing the right thing.
“Sure, I will join some caucuses if I win. I looked if they had one, and they don’t … so…
I am going to start the ‘12th Districts Caucus’ and invite everyone who is in their state’s 12th district to join. We can do things with 12 in them, like have ‘donut days’ for the caucus, and watch the movie ‘The Dirty Dozen’ once a month … and just real cool stuff like that …”
“One question … where do I get a cloak? I remember watching Harry Potter and they had that ‘wand store’ … for wands, duh … but Congress has a ‘Cloak Room’ … is the ‘cloak store’ in Washington?”
Plummer won because he was the best organized. Unlike some of the presidential candidates who had trouble circulating petitions, Jason had teams of 8 and 9 people at community festivals last fall complete with clipboards, petitions and a smile.
The negative attacks on Cook hurt him. It would have been nice if the media had looked into them and let the rest of us know if they were legitimate or bogus.
Jason may be young, but even old Abe could have looked up to him.
“Well, my week is pretty full … some campaign stops, thank you visits to supporters … doctor vist … how’s that …. yeah, doctor visit … I got to get my shots for Potomac Fever, which is kinda like Strep I guess … gives me the chills, so I am going to get my shots and a case of Sunny D …”
“This election, for me was like the epic tale of good versus evil, the establishment, versus the ones who want it ’shaken up’ … it became real clear to me early on … Rodger Cook was … wait … ‘Captain Hook … Cook’ …I was …”Peter Pan …Plummer’ … hello? See it … yes … Once you understand that, I couldn’t see how I was going to lose.”
Oh, gonna make me blush, OW. I forgot, “cuz that’s socialism,” at the end of mine - which is fairly inexcusable. You,however, are on quite a roll.
After Rich’s guess that JP was Plummer, I can’t stop looking at the initials jbp. For some reason, I want his middle name to be “breakfast” more than I can say. Jason Breakfast Plummer.
“I want the people fo the 12th District to know, i will not go on any junkets (whispers, ‘boring’) while a member of congress .. I may go on field trips to Six Flags or the Wisconsin Dells, but no junkets.”
“I heard the Congress has a …’Gym’ … great, there are Math questions to RUN for Congress, and ‘Gym’ once your IN Congress … real jobs are alot like High School…”
“Being a Congressman won’t change much for me, actually. Yes, I will have a job, and there is ’session’, but on recess and breaks, I’ll go work for my Dad to earn money for next semester as I always did …”
“How will I like Congress … i will love it! It’s like going to those large college classrooms and the professor is speaking, and other ’students’ speak, that’s all the same.
Now, I don’t have to study and they won’t call my name unless I raise my hand, which is the REALLY cool part.”
“Some reporter keeps asking me about G-O-TV .. is that like European Soccer channel on Cable or Satellite … G-O-TV … I am running for Congress, I don’t care about soccer right now!”
“I am humble. All I hear is that I am not humble. ‘Jason Plummer’ knows ‘Jason Plummer’ is humble. ‘Jason doesn’t need to tell anyone how humble ‘Jason’ is … I’ll show them humble, I will be the most hum-bil-ie humble person ever to humb … “
JPB, a little advice: if you want to match wits with Oswego Willy, you better double up, son. Half ain’t going to cut it.
Otherwise, you’re bringing a knife to a gunfight. And a pretty dull knife at that.
Willy, if the state GOP doesn’t understand where you’re coming from, they’re content to remain in the minority, draw their checks, have their staff, and get their per diem. Which, I’m convinced, is the deal after all these years.
On a, somehow, related subject, it being spring and all:
–The 1986 Mets … they had other problems besides punctuation.–
Unless “blow” is a punctuation mark.
Who would have thought that Gary Carter would die before Doc and Straw?
I had a buddy working plumbing down in Tampa when Doc and Straw were coming through the Mets system, and he used to go to their games and party with them. Those dudes could party, as we all found out.
They weren’t in Tampa long. Doc won 19 games in The Bigs when he was 18. The next year, he won 21. Straw was one of the most feared hitters in baseball when he was a kid.
The thing with Doc, he never knew what he had. He had a lightning bolt in his arm. When they taught him to throw a noon-to-six curveball, it took him about ten tosses, and all of a sudden he’s better than Bert Blyleven.
He was a natural. He never appreciated his gift. Until it was gone. All you old Little Leaguers out there, can you imagine?
Those words are too kind. You are THE “Gold” Standard, and there is no question why the Golden Horseshoe for Commenter is named for you.
I know my posts are to deaf “eyes”, but it does give me great solace that you “get” where I come from with the ILGOP, Cross, Plummer, et al.
IF … the GOP read what I post, I would hope they understand that I am just trying to point out how they all could be so much better, and try to look at things a bit differently, in hopes to helping the cause.
Admittedly, I do enjoy a good mocking too…
This is not the first time you have made me feel better that my snark is out there and has a sting of truth to try to help the cause … That is pretty cool, so thanks.
To the Mets …Right on the mark, interviews of the 1986 and the 1987 Mets consisted of guys not appreciateing the gifts they had, and thinking “everything always turns out well for us, this will never end.”
Gary Carter
As a kid, I was one of the kids who specifically bought a catcher’s mitt to imitate the “Catcher from the Expos” and when “the Kid” went to the Mets, you knew that Team was cookin’ with gas.
“Wasted talent, that is what my Father always warned me about … wasting my talent.”
Thanks for the “Cherry on the Sundae” with your post - wordslinger -, I would enjoy talking politics or baseball with you anytime.
“I know how Washington works … I saw “The American President” like 10 times in a row on HBO one weekend, so I know the ‘Beltway’ and I am going to change it.”
“Yes … I was told some members of Congress get apartments, is that true … yeah, …I don’t think I am ready for Off-Campus housing, do you have a Freshman Dorm, or do you throw us in with the older kids right away …. Jason Plummer … P-L-U-M-M-E-R … from Illinois….No, this is not a radio bit, I am the GOP Nominee from the 12th District … Are you saying the Freshman Dorms are full, or all the dorms are full … oh, NO dorms … I would be willing to pay to be a Resident Assistant if that helps … Yes, Plummer, Jason Plummer … and I do want to get on the ‘Meal Plan’ for the Congressional Dining Room … Yep, that’s me … oh … so you HAVE heard of me …”
Calhoun, there are many of us who would be a lot more Red than Blue if guys like Willie and Schnorf were valued in their own party today.
It never ceases to amaze me that they are not. Brains, talent, hard work, wit and guts don’t mean much in some circles.
Of course, many Republicans can’t cut the mustard in some circles these days, Reagan (voted for FDR four times) or Goldwater, would be treated like Bolsheviks by the Tea Partiers.
Sez la vie. Until then, Willie jabs like Ali, and Schnorf goes to the gut like Frazier. And they fight the good fight.
God bless Willie and Schnorf, we all need them.
And for all you canaries in the coal mine out there, it’s looking possible that our friends in Indiana are fixing to push out Sen. Lugar.
Military intelligence advisor to Pres. Eisenhower (Ike, for all you youngsters out there). Innovative mayor of a big city. Brilliant senator. Beat swords into plowshares by decommissioning nuclear material aimed at us and converting it to electric power.
Yeah, the GOP and the country doesn’t need any of that. The Tea Party said so. And they’re the depository of all virtue and wisdom. Just ask them.
“Well, one thing that Harriman and I have in common is the ‘double letter’ in the last name … ‘Harriman - two ‘r’s … Plummer - two ‘r’s … uh … ‘m’s … so the district has some cool names to choose from … that have double letter last names …”
“Yeah, I had a real good feeling going into Tuesday. I walked a ton of precincts, we got our message out on TV, our mail was spot on, and my Magic 8 ball said, ‘All signs point YES’ when I asked if I was going to win, so I was cautiously optimistic.”
Of course, Plummer could be the national GOP’s star of the future. (Bear with me a sec.) Remember Quayle? Many of us thought he was a dunce in ‘88. Along came Dubya, and suddenly Quayle started to seem like a Rhodes Scholar. Then Sarah Palin showed up, leaving Dubya looking like the smartest boy in the class. Now (heaven forbid), what if Plummer went national in ten years? Plummer for president! (Did I really just write that? No, no, I’m sure I did not.) Jay Jay would make Sarah Palin look like — I don’t know — Margaret Thatcher, perhaps.
But please, please, please — may this never come to pass.
That last one was Post 100 … Hopefully some you liked, some you really liked, and some were Jason Plummer (maybe?) … Just noting the milestone, if i get a few more, I’ll drop them.
“I do miss Jerry, and Bill, and everyone from my race for Lt Governor.
Boy, if Bill and Jerry hadn’t blown that race, I would be the Lt. Governor of Illinois.
In quiet moments, I think, ‘I covered all those border counties, I hid, when I messed up I went to my room, I did EVERYTHING I could do to help, and it came down to others that I … Jason Plummer … am not a Lt. Governor’ …
It stings, but I know I have the best possible candidate to help me win … and that’s me.”
“I think what upsets me the most is when someone gets mad at me for a campagingn strategy. I leave all that up to people who know what they are doing, which doesn’t include me …”
