Quinn campaign reacts to Daley candidacy announcement

Tuesday, Jun 11, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Via the Sun-Times

“After 10 years with no capital construction program, Gov. Quinn fought for and signed into law the largest capital construction program in state history which is putting hundreds of thousands of people back to work building roads, schools and bridges. Gov. Quinn delivered landmark education reform that is a model for the nation; strong, new ethics laws to clean up corruption and recently, legislation to extend health insurance to thousands of people who don’t have it.

“Gov. Quinn continues to lead the fight for comprehensive pension reform, marriage equality and gun-safety and he will not stop fighting until these are law.

“With the primary in March, the governor is focused on working hard for the people of Illinois – there will be plenty of time for politics in the future.”

Nobody gets to dictate timing. That’s just the way things go in the real world. So, this dodge about “there will be plenty of time for politics in the future” ain’t gonna hold up for long.

Somebody should whisper in Quinn’s ear… we are the worst state in the union in oh so many ways… and have only plummeted even further into the abyss under his mismanagement… I suppose the only thing that could have made it worse is if a Daley had been governor.

  2. - Huh? - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:33 pm:

Who is speaking on behalf of the Quinn campaign? Does he have a staff?

  3. - Cassiopeia - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 12:41 pm:

Quinn’s response to problems is always that he is fighting and working hard. He seems to miss that part about getting things done and finishing.

“Gov. Quinn continues to lead the fight for comprehensive pension reform….”

Oh, puh-leeze. Also in today’s Sun-Times, there’s an article about the Governor, Cullerton, and Madigan’s meeting yesterday, and Madigan said that Quinn will have “one solid week where this is the only issue” and Quinn can help lobby for votes. The governor’s response? According to the Sun-Times, he said “his support of pension reform is clear and that the onus is on lawmakers, especially Cullerton and Madigan, to act.” So, apparently Quinn feels no responsibility to do any heavy lifting or help drum up support for pension reform. I’m curious as to what he’s doing to lead the fight (as he professes he’s doing), because it doesn’t sound like much.

Pat Quinn still looks much better to me than any of the other candidates who have announced that they will run for governor. Quinn is one of the most honest governor’s of Illinois in recent memory. During his term as Governor he has passed a capital construction bill, civil union bill, a much needed tax increase, and expanded early childhood education. He has stood firmly against a gambling expansion bill that lacks ethics and oversight and is deficient in revenue for state government. Governor Quinn is a reformer and a member of the middle class, not part of the one percent. He will have my vote, unless Lisa decides to run for governor. In that case I will have to give this decision more thought.

  6. - David P. Graf - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:12 pm:

Bill Daley will never get my vote. I worked at Bank One in Chicago and will not forget how he sold out tens of thousands of us when he took a job with Chase. It was a nice little payoff that mollified Mayor Daley who have otherwise thrown a holy cow over the merger with Chase. Daley better remember that we still remember how he played footsie with Dimon.

  7. - OneMan - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:22 pm:

== Governor Quinn is a reformer and a member of the middle class, not part of the one percent. ==

So using that same logic you didn’t vote for President Obama since he was not middle class, right? Nor would you have voted for the Kennedy’s , Mike Madigan, etc…

So is it just being in the 1% that is the problem, so if was in the 2% or the 3% it would be a problem?

I can get why you may not like the way he made his money… But I will never understand why your income level (high or low) disqualifies you from holding office in this country.

So using that same logic, a successful surgeon is out as well as a senior partner at several Chicago law firms. How about a woman who developed her own fashion line? Using another example, the woman who started Pampered Chef is from Illinois, guess she is disqualified as well….

    @Ruby:

“Paid for by Citizens for Quinn.” You should be speaking on the behalf of the Governor . . . wait, you already are.

  9. - Ruby - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:26 pm:

    Demoralized @ 1:22 pm

Actually, I voted for Bill Brady not Quinn in the last election for Governor of Illinois.

==Actually, I voted for Bill Brady not Quinn in the last election for Governor of Illinois. ==

And you are going to vote for Quinn this time? That’s a huge whiplash moment. I don’t fault you for your independence but holy cow, those guys are like night and day as far as policy goes. I don’t doubt the Governor’s sincerity or that he is a good and decent person but that doesn’t translate into being a good Governor. He simply does not know how to govern. That is my problem with Quinn.

  11. - Will Caskey - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 1:57 pm:

In all fairness, it is June of the off year. The most scrutiny typically starts three months or so before the primary.

There will, in fact, be plenty of time for politics in the future.

  12. - BR - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:07 pm:

Ruby… Quinn’s idea of meaningful legislation to sign into law is the Puppy Lemon Law. Our 2A rights continue to be trampled on…. but consumers are safe from bad guys selling puppies with runny noses…. Good to know he can handle the important legislation.

  13. - Nickypiii - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:13 pm:

If it looks like a lame duck and quack like a lame duck then it probably is a lame duck!

  14. - Juvenal - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:16 pm:

Daley’s candidacy is great news for Dan Rutherford.

Ought to freeze a bunch of Rauner donors.

  15. - Rahm's Middle Finger - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:19 pm:

Jack Franks is running statewide. What a joke.

“Quinn is one of the most honest governor’s of Illinois in recent memory”

Well, since the last two went to jail, that’s technically correct.

But I’m really tired of hearing how “honest” Quinn is. Since he took office, Quinn has been notorious for using public payrolls to give jobs to any Dems that either ran a few times for office and lost, or that he thinks should not run for office again.

Quinn may be more honest than Ryan or Blago, but he’s still a hack.

  17. - Small Town Liberal - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:22 pm:

BR - I’m pretty sure the GA sent quinn around 600 bills, and the same court that gave you a favorable ruling gave the state an extension. I know crying is your 1st amendment right, but do you have to do it all the time?

  18. - AFSCME Steward - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:27 pm:

There is no question than Daley is a much stronger leader than Quinn. His track record speaks for itself. However, there are real questions about ethics and honesty in government. The Daley name has repeatedly been involved in scandels and insider deals. Quinn wins the honesty battle hands down. The Daley name is poison to many Illinois voters. Quinn has not shown sufficient leadership and problem solving abilities to earn solid support for another term. If Lisa gets in the race, her father will be a hinderance. The GOP has a real opportunity to lure voters from the dem primary. Getting behind a candidate that is moderate and can appeal to voters not pleased with the dem choice could be a winning ticket. Another candidate with the appeal of Brady almost guarantees one of the 3 dems wins.

  19. - sal-says - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 2:41 pm:

“After 10 years with no capital construction program, Gov. Quinn fought for and signed into law the largest capital construction program in state history…” - That IL, who can’t pay outstanding billions in bills, will have to pay for.

“…which is putting hundreds of thousands of people back to work…” - 100’s of THOUSANDS?

“Gov. Quinn delivered landmark education reform that is a model for the nation…” - But is cutting education funding at the same time?

“…new ethics laws to clean up corruption…” - But apparently never got rid of the riff-raff Blago put on? - And continues to hire his own out-of-work buddies?

“Gov. Quinn continues to LEAD the fight for comprehensive pension reform…” - From the rear, apparently as an after thought.

And, even his Lt. Gov. is quitting on him.

  20. - Barney Fife - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 3:30 pm:

New ethics laws to combat corruption? His own Idoc Dirctor Godinez was found guilty by O.E.I.G. of ethics violations and Quinn reappoints him? Explain the thought process please.

  21. - Sinister - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 4:12 pm:

Note to Quinnsters: Abandon ship! Titanic (Quinn) has left the port and is headed directly to the iceberg.

  22. - Small Town Liberal - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 4:14 pm:

    - Explain the thought process please. -

Why don’t you ask the Senators from both sides of the aisle that confirmed him?

  23. - Barney Fife - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 4:58 pm:

Small Town Liberal. I would ask except his 2 yr appiintment was up in March. He not only hasn’t been confirmed yet but he hasn’t even been scheduled for Exec Appt Comm hearing, so who would you ask?

  24. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 5:55 pm:

In a campaign, Quinn won’t quit.

He’s not scared of losing. He’s lost plenty.

I don’t think Bill Daley can say the same thing. He’s never had the guts to try.

I still don’t believe Daley is all in.

I’m sure Daley can raise some money, but it’s from Rahm’s crew that is already kicking in to Rauner.

Where can Daley, even in Chicago, count on a big vote? The Mighty 11th?

Don’t believe it. The Daleys lorded it over the old-timers in Bridgeport forever. The old Irish and Italians there have had it with them. The Chinese and Hispanic voters there now could care less about a Daley.

  25. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 6:56 pm:

Speaking of Rahm, does that guy have the national spin operation or what?

Last week, he was on the cover of Time (yes, I guess the magazine still exists) with a puff-piece. Today, he has the lead column on the front page of the NYT on crime.

The Chicago “murder epidemic” was always wrong and silly, but come on? It’s done a little bit this year because of savior Rahm.

The guy is a fundraiser, a fixer, and a spin doctor. He is not a mayor or executive of any kind.

  26. - Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Jun 11, 13 @ 7:50 pm:

Good response at this point in time–one that the People will appreciate.
