A new record

Wednesday, Jun 12, 2013 - Posted by Rich Miller

* May is usually the busiest month on the blog because it’s the end of session. I checked the stats this morning and it turns out that this past May was by far the best ever.

“Unique visitors” shot up by 51 percent over the previous May. Those visitor numbers were also nearly double those for May, 2010.

Page views last month were 1.1 million higher than they were in May, 2012. And they were almost triple the page views of May, 2010.

Every other category obliterated prior May records.

Thanks.

Does this now make you part of the mainstream media?
    j/k.

Congrats. Cap Fax, and I truly mean this, has reached a level of significance that rivals any statewide office holder. I would actually say that in some cases this blog has moved more votes that Gov Quinn has.

  2. - Give Me A Break - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 8:54 am:

Rich what are you going to do when Concealed Carry, Marriage and Pensions are resolved? Maybe Rod could come back for a weeks.

  3. - Stones - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 8:54 am:

  6. - walkinfool - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 8:55 am:

    Congrats.

Part of the reason this is the place to go, is the proprietor’s rules in red above. Rich carries a big stick behind the bar to enforce them.

  7. - Tsavo - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 8:56 am:

    Congratulations!!!!

  8. - lake county democrat - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 8:57 am:

I’d say “time for a tip jar” but maybe that would impact on subscriptions?

  9. - walkinfool - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 8:58 am:

Oops. Make the the rules in red below.

  10. - walkinfool - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 8:59 am:

  14. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:05 am:

Capitol Fax is the “Blog of Record” for any and all parts of government and politics in Illinois, period, new paragraph.

That is really all that needs to be said.

    Congratulations, Rich.

    It lives and breathes.

  15. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:08 am:

    Thank you, Rich.

I bet you’ll have a record-setting June as well based on all the action of the first 10 days.

  16. - Mason born - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:09 am:

Thank you Rich. This is the one of the few places were straight news on the Government of the State can be found.

  17. - Dan Bureaucrat - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:11 am:

  21. - Langhorne - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:16 am:

Well done. Well deserved. There is a higher level of discourse here, wout losing sharpness in the exchanges. Glad i could help

I know it takes work, but keep using and grooming your interns. They are the next generation blog hosts. A quick fundraiser might help endow a position or two. Rib eye and a pop for a good cause

  22. - Robert the Bruce - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:16 am:

    +51% unique visitors, wow! Congratulations.

  23. - zatoichi - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:25 am:

Great blog with people who really understand the details of the state systems.

That’s a lot of comments to review. Did the banned for life stats also jump?

  24. - Rufus - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:36 am:

I learn more about Illinois politics here then any place else. Thanks Rich!

  25. - Silent Majority - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:47 am:

Just shows what posting pictures of a cute dog will do for viewership.

  26. - WestSider - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:47 am:

More than simply ‘Congratulations’ are in order, as least from me. In the midst of the fog that is politics and policy in the Great State of Illinois, Capitol Fax provides clarity and a good dose of wisdom, on a daily basis. Thank You, Rich.

  27. - Proud Momma - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:49 am:

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

  28. - shore - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:51 am:

    #1 reason. Barton the intern.

  29. - downstate commissioner - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 9:58 am:

Three places I check every day on the internet: NOAA Weather (home page), work email, and Capitol Fax. One place that I usually check several times a day: Cap Fax.

  30. - John Boch - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 10:14 am:

    Guns, gays, gambling and pensions…

It’s not like there isn’t a confluence of high interest topics.

    Congrats.

Lucky for you, Illinois politics being what it is, only one or two of those will get addressed this year, leaving the rest for the future.

  31. - Six Degrees of Separation - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 10:49 am:

I would actually say that in some cases this blog has moved more votes that Gov Quinn has.

That’s like saying the Sox got more hits this year than the 1938 Yankees.

  32. - RonOglesby - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 11:01 am:

    Congrats Rich,
I will say (much like the comments) that you probably got some up tick from the gun control/CCW stuff. I will say I came to find this site from that.

That said I actually check it about everyday now to see what is happening in the capitol with regards to any topic.

  33. - Belle - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 11:10 am:

Congrats! You deserve the increase. It’s a terrific blog that instructs one on the idiosyncrasies of Spingfield politics plus a well-monitored board that keeps commenters in line.

  34. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 11:21 am:

Congratulations, and well deserved. I encourage my colleagues to visit this blog and learn about Illinois politics and especially about issues that concern them, like pensions.

  35. - Rudy - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 11:47 am:

guns and Rauner are driving your numbers, Rich

  36. - Cincinnatus - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 12:00 pm:

I would like to congratulate Rich not just on the number of noobs to the site, but for his choices of the back-end hardware and software associated with CapFax. Normally, when one sees this type of increased traffic, the site bogs down and becomes virtually unusable. I’ve stopped following some sites for this reason alone. I can only remember one or two instances in the past 4 years where CapFax had any technical difficulties.

  37. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 12:24 pm:

Sometimes it feels like the same 100 people visiting 10,000 times per day. I have to believe May 31st was a peak traffic day here.

    Good work Rich. Congratulations.

  38. - Cheswick - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 12:45 pm:

Excellent job, Rich. Thanks for keeping ‘em straight for the rest of us.

  39. - wishbone - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 3:14 pm:

It’s your pithy commenters that are drawing the crowd, and I do mean pithy. Seriously congrats!

  40. - FormerParatrooper - Wednesday, Jun 12, 13 @ 3:55 pm:

It’s not hard to believe in the success of your blog. It is a quality product and helps understand the unique in and outs of Illinois politics.

Congratulations Sir, may the numbers only rise.
