Question of the day

* Bruce Rauner’s repeated refusal to offer up any specifics continues

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner says his goals for changing Illinois government now include installing term limits.

Later, though, while talking to reporters, Rauner declined to offer specifics, saying “we don’t have details on it yet,” but that an announcement was forthcoming.

* Kudos to Tom Kacich for writing this

The 53-year-old venture capitalist said he was glad to see Attorney General Lisa Madigan decline to run for the Democratic nomination for governor.

“Her family is part of the corruption in the state. The voters don’t want concentrated power. They don’t want family dynasties,” he said. “We’ve got the same thing developing with the whole Daley-Emanuel machine. I am vehemently against (Democrat William) Daley being governor because Chicago already has that corruption and that patronage and the problems.”

Rauner, however, has contributed $200,000 to the campaign of Mayor Richard M. Daley and has supported Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

* The Question: Bruce Rauner is to specifics as _____ is to _____?

  36. - McHenry Mike - Wednesday, Jul 17, 13 @ 1:25 pm:

    I questioned Rauner about his term limits proposal when he was in our area last week. Under the state constitution, you can only have a binding citizen referendum to change the form or structure of state government. A guy named Pat Quinn submitted 437,000 signatures in 1994 to impose term limits on the General Assembly, only to have the State Supreme Court take it off the ballot by a 4 to 3 decision.

    Ironically, one Republican Supreme Court justice from the Chicago suburban seat voted with the Chicago Democrats while the one downstate Democrat voted with the two downstate Republicans in dissent.

    Quinn then decried the result.

    It would be interesting to see if that could be reduxed at this point. There is an entirely new Supreme Court and the downstate Democrat’s seat is up in what is to be a hotly contested election. Would he vote to overturn the precedent? Would Justice Thomas, who is now the suburban Republican justice, vote with the Chicago Democrats?

    Short of having the GA put it on the ballot or having a CON CON, there is no other way to do this.

  37. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Jul 17, 13 @ 1:26 pm:

* Everyone has their own priorities
* There's a simple explanation for this
* 1,287 new cases, 73 additional deaths
* Pritzker says one of his office employees has tested positive - Largest single-day death toll so far - 3680 hospital patients yesterday - "43% of our total hospital beds are available and 35% of our ICU beds are available" - Non-COVID hospital visits drop due to stay at home order - Usage trend up 8 percentage points for ICU beds and 5 points for ventilators in a week - Some Chicago-area ICU units "near max capacity" - Peoria and Edwardsville see available ICU beds dropping - New cases in 23 more counties in last week alone - Thanks Gov. Newsome for 100 ventilators - Placed orders for 3620 more ventilators - 25 percent reduction in detained juvenile population - No "regular close contact" with infected staffer - Pritzker not tested - Won't comment about report of 12,000 body bags ordered - State and locals checking records for missed COVID-19 deaths - Not encouraging arrests - No special policing orders issued - Asked about regrets - Responds to Rep. Wilhour - No plan for regional stand down of order - Responds to Trump's latest claim - Addresses EO on prisoner release
