Tuesday, Mar 4, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* There’s a debate at 6 o’clock

The 2014 Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidates will participate in a forum on Tuesday, March 4, co-sponsored by NBC 5 Chicago and the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics and Harris School of Public Policy, at 6:00 p.m.

All four candidates in the Republican primary —Bill Brady, Kirk Dillard, Bruce Rauner and Dan Rutherford — will participate in this first-ever partnership between UChicago and NBC 5.

The 60-minute forum will be broadcast live on NBC 5 (WMAQ-TV) from the David and Reva Logan Center for the Arts’ Performance Hall. The event will also be webcast live and will include an additional 30-minute question-and-answer session with the audience at the end.

There’s no link on NBC’s website yet, but help out in comments if you can.

* Also tonight…

    Is this the last debate?

There should be some nice exchanges between Rauner, Dillard and Brady.

  2. - Lunchbox - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 3:37 pm:

There’s a debate tomorrow as well on Channel 9, as well. I’ll be attending tonight’s.

    Thanks, @Lunchbox.

I just read that there are apparently 3 debates left, including tonight. Good times.

  7. - Percival - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 4:06 pm:

It’s like watching the 4th Quarter of a football game when the outcome is no longer in doubt. You can enjoy the individual plays, you know that overall there are more useful things to do.

  8. - Illinois taxpayer - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 4:32 pm:

Will David Axelrod be asking questions (since he runs U of C’s Institute of Politics), or is he disqualified as a D?

  9. - Joan P. - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 5:15 pm:

    @ Illinois taxpayer -

No, Carol Marin from Channel 5 will be doing the questioning.

  10. - anon - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 5:54 pm:

It looks like this link will have the broadcast, but, I’m not sure since it hasn’t started yet (it’s one of those we’ll be right back blank feeds ATM).

Charter schools - Rutherford, no public money, Dillard, same as Rutherford…Rauner, choice is critical, major transformation and public investment, no ISAT, vouchers… Brady, choice and competition… vouchers

  30. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:27 pm:

Those guys should have all anticipated those questions. Bad form across the board.

    Bad form all.

    Yikes, Mitch Daniels…

  35. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:32 pm:

Rutherford’s face on the question of having SS couple stay at the Mansion was just …Wow

  36. - Johnny Q. Suburban - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:32 pm:

What terrible form on that question to Rutherford.

  37. - Johnny Q. Suburban - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:33 pm:

I expected better from Carol Marin.

  38. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:33 pm:

CC question fun. Glad to hear responses

  39. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:35 pm:

Death Penalty - interesting answers as to criteria, if they have them, and how “safe” is safe.

  40. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:36 pm:

    Tacky, tacky.

Better form on the goofy ccw question.

  41. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:40 pm:

  42. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:42 pm:

    Jobs
    Dullard blab.blab blab
    Rauner outta the park
    Brady good but canned
    Rut canned

  43. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:42 pm:

    Business creation talking points abound…

Medicaid now, boilerplate response from Rauner, Brady goes after Dillard w/Obamacare

  44. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:44 pm:

Marin is all over this Career Politican / Rauner … wow

  45. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:47 pm:

    Rahm-ruhroh.

    Young leaders? Blago?

Brady-stay on the attack. Don’t let up.

  46. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:47 pm:

Rauner is battlin’ - struggling to get footing below him. Brady goes offensive, can’t name those close to Rauner but Levine. Better prep of Brady was needed to be impactful. Missed opportunity, Rauner gave openings…

  47. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:48 pm:

Why didn’t Marin ask Rauner why he’s spent $6 million plus of his own money, besides another $8 million plus from other sources, taking over (hijacking) the GOP in Illinois?

  48. - Johnny Q. Suburban - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:49 pm:

How could you not ask Rauner about the demonization of state employees? Terrible. Inexcusable. I’m very disappointed in how this whole thing has been conducted.

  49. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:50 pm:

    State workers

Rut say thanks plan ahead. Good.

Brady No. Not get rid of ISBE.

  50. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:51 pm:

Rutherford is really engaged and angry/passionate and walking that line fairly well.

  51. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:52 pm:

    What a disaster.

  52. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:55 pm:

Corruption - fair maps, ethics, US Attorney mentioned. Term limits, business super stars, Daniels, Union Bosses…MJM by Brady, ironies of Brady talking maps …

  53. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:55 pm:

All looking very ill-prepared for Marin and these questions.

  54. - Wensicia - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:57 pm:

Don’t mess with the NRA and the 2nd Amendment.

  55. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:57 pm:

    Wow. Fiascos abound.

  56. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:59 pm:

Ill-prepared but Carol’s biases are showing a bit by now. Geez.
    Time for pie, OW?

  57. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 6:59 pm:

Just heated, added ala mode my friend

  58. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:00 pm:

Brady still doesn’t get that people vote.

  59. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:01 pm:

    Gaming - nothing really impactful.

Ex offenders back in society? Interesting question to be asked

  60. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:02 pm:

Koch Brothers? Yikes, there aren’t other better questions?

  61. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:03 pm:

Sounds good. No pie but I have plenty of the ala mode. Going to make up a sundae.

  62. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:03 pm:

    Dopiest question yet…

    Model Governor???

Dillard, great laugh line, no mention of Edgar.

  63. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:05 pm:

    Pandering to likeable governors.

What is this, high school prom kings or queens?

  64. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:06 pm:

Rutherford most thoughtful to Prom King/Queen governors. Nice

  65. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:07 pm:

Good for Kirk for making the Edgar joke before someone else did.
    No surprise on yours, Bruce.
    Bill, ok.
Interesting twist on lack of awareness Dan

  66. - PoolGuy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:08 pm:

Brady mentions TX and FL with no income tax. is he clueless or what????

  67. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:08 pm:

Going back I wish someone would have said who.are the Koch Brothers?

  68. - PoolGuy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:09 pm:

Texas has oil/gas and FL has tourism, which is why they don’t need or have to have an income tax. bad comparison Bill

  69. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:10 pm:

    - AA -, nice, that would have been a nice move towards Marin and the question…

  70. - DuPage Dave - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:10 pm:

It seems like Carol Marin was expecting real answers to questions rather than rehearsed sound bites. Hasn’t she seen one of these “debates” before?

  71. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:10 pm:

How about that you vacation with Rahm… Dopey advoidance

  72. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:11 pm:

Agreement on graduated tax but for different reasons.
    Huh.

  73. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:11 pm:

Dillard makes Rahm points well. Nicely done.

  74. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:14 pm:

    Cheap shot Carol.

    Dan/Rahm-”we’re Conversant” lol

  75. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:15 pm:

    Carol/Edgar shot… bad form

  76. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:16 pm:

Rauner talking himself in a circle on “bribe” word.

  77. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:17 pm:

Rauner explains the massive conspiracy. Dope.

  78. - PoolGuy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:17 pm:

so Bruce tobacco companies, oil companies, coal companies don’t have special interests when they contribute???? what a clueless dope head.

  79. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:17 pm:

Brady hammers Levine on Rauner - way to go!!!

  80. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:18 pm:

    Go Bill!

  81. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:18 pm:

Rauner struggling to explain away conflicts

  82. - PoolGuy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:19 pm:

nice shot Bill finally someone hammered him on his BS

  83. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:21 pm:

Just when it starts going somewhere meaningful, let’s cut to Telemundo? Oy.

  84. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:22 pm:

Did Dillard just forger his Kira’s ages?

  85. - Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:23 pm:

So tough to see Brucie bumbling and struggling…!

  86. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:24 pm:

Make that kids ages and he blew the question as well.

  87. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:24 pm:

Tough for Rutherford to talk about Staff? Nope.

  88. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:25 pm:

Never expect to be asked or volunteer your kids’ ages, but if you bring it up, better know it … lol. It is what it is I guess.

  89. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:26 pm:

    Decriminalizing Heroin? What?

  90. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:28 pm:

    I love pie …

  91. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:29 pm:

    MJM breakfast…love it.

    No Rauner direct answers …lol

  92. - Samurai - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:29 pm:

    Met with Legislatures…duh. I’m transformational…

  93. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:29 pm:

    What a goofy closer.

  94. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:30 pm:

    Goofier closer?

    “Favorite color?” …yikes.

  95. - PoolGuy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:31 pm:

Rauner is proving time and again he cannot directly answer any question, no matter how simple. wow

  96. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:32 pm:

    Dillard-”that administration I ran”

  97. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:32 pm:

    Winners and Losers?

Winning points, Losing points is probably better.

No one lost tonght, couple stumbles, some even Marin induced …

  98. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:34 pm:

Rauner was most evasive, and given that Marin called him on some evasiveness was obvious. All four handeled the “achilles’ heel” question poorer than poor…

  99. - PoolGuy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:35 pm:

Brady is probably the true conservative, Rutherford the moderate Republican, Dillard I can’t figure out anymore, and Rauner is none of the above.

  100. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:35 pm:

Willy, honest to Pete I was expecting “Boxers or Briefs” st the rate they were going. This was a lot of.Carol and not much of the U of C.

  101. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:37 pm:

The talk of the talk WILL be the question on SS couple staying at the Mansion and addressing it towards Rutherford… and that LOOK Rutherford gave … and the pregant pause … wil be yapped about.

  102. - Percival - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:37 pm:

Nobody damaged Rauner enough to change things, though he certainly did not look good tonight. He’s going to be taking some serious heat in the General, and he’d best come up with better than he put out tonight.

  103. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:40 pm:

It had that MTV feel at times … and cringe-worthy moments that focused around those types of questions, for sure. Actually, when they were answering the Dopey questions is when I got another fajita, heated up my pie, got the ice cream … just turned up the TV …

  104. - x ace - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:41 pm:

    Groucho:
” Say the Secret Word and a Duck will come down and Give You Fifty Dollars”

    Tonight’s Secret Word was ____________ ?

  105. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:44 pm:

    Biggest Loser(s)?

Staff on the not having some answers ready to prepare these guys for the “achilles’ heel”.

Really? Obama Ad, Failed Business issues, Payton Prep … a report paid for by taxpayers.

Gentleman, you are running for Governor. These are not new issues, or issues that haven’t warrented thought.

Prep was weak and that is where it showed.

  106. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:49 pm:

The lighting looked shadowy on Rauner-not flattering. Was it that way on teevee?

    Mm, Ice cream.

  107. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 7:51 pm:

yeah, - AA -, the lighting was awful for Rauner, seemed as though the Podium was placed incorrectly, and his height exaserbated the missing mark of the Poduim.

Again, no one from NBC5 or any campaign decided to look at this? Marin looked like, at times, like she had a flashlight aimed from below towards her nose and eyes …

  108. - Percival - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:04 pm:

The lighting was horrible. Rutherford looked like a corpse from a horror movie, and Brady looked like a villain out of Dick Tracy. Only Dillard clicked with his lighting.

  109. - Downstate - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:04 pm:

Poll is out. Dillard is losing ground
Guess the teacher endorsement came with a cost

  110. - A Modest Proposal - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:05 pm:

    Any news on the poll?

  111. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:05 pm:

I saw on the Tweeter this afternoon a “Dress Rehearsal” for this event and it now dawns on me why the lighting was off. They had young ladies standing in place for the candidates - even though a couple were standing on a box, the height discrepancy was too great. Whoops.

The debate yesterday had a number of sound problems, tonight lights. Live HD teevee away from the studio may be harder to pull off than it seems.

  112. - A Modest Proposal - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:13 pm:

    http://weaskamerica.com/2014/03/04/il-gop-gov-tracker/

  113. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:14 pm:

    @Downstate-

Nothing to do with teacher endorsement, I would expect.

More about Rauner spending money comparing Dillard and Brady to Quinn.

There is a silver lining in these crosstabs for Quinn.

  114. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:16 pm:

    - Yellow Dog Democrat -,

Agreed, the tabs leave openings for Quinn.

  115. - Samurai - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:21 pm:

Where was McKenna polling two weeks out?

  116. - Downstate - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:40 pm:

    Ydd
But just last week everyone was saying that rauner had peaked and that the hit pieces would be his undoing.

  117. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 8:46 pm:

The trend line isn’t looking good for the only candidate with a shot to beat Rauner: Undecided.

  118. - PoolGuy - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 9:03 pm:

Brady 2nd after Rauner in Cook county. interesting :)

  119. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 11:11 pm:

    @Downstate-

“Everyone” did not include me or Oswego Willy.

In the history of Illinois politics, I don’t think any candidate has every come back to win from 25 points down in three weeks. Certainly not in a four way race while being outspent 20 to 1.

I will say Rauner proved tonight that he is still a rookie. 25 points up and he’s still pitching a plan to bring back the death penalty?

  120. - Anon - Tuesday, Mar 4, 14 @ 11:27 pm:

After this poll, you should understand today’s Rauner commercial. He’s no longer running against primary opponents, he’s running against Quinn. And it’s morning in America baby!

  121. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 5, 14 @ 6:45 am:

Thanks, - YDD -, for having my back as well.

Yeah that “everyone” - I think my memory is like yours as to … “everyone”. We didn’t say Rauner peaked.

Raunerbots are fun. They hear what they want, believe what they are told, and play a victim, this time of “peaking” and they “overcame” a straw man statement, “everyone” says.

Appreciate that you read and comprehend, - YDD -.

  122. - Downstate - Wednesday, Mar 5, 14 @ 6:57 am:

    Okay, my bad,
Define me with names if you wish. So many on this board were saying Rauner would never get above 2nd place. He was a retread of McKenna and Hull.
I think he is tapping into a deep frustration in the electorate.
I look forward to the general election where we can talk about the glories of the Quinn governorship.

  123. - Bill White - Wednesday, Mar 5, 14 @ 7:15 am:

=== I think he is tapping into a deep frustration in the electorate. ===

True. However, Bruce Rauner will give that electorate something very different than what they will be expecting.

  124. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 5, 14 @ 7:19 am:

===True. However, Bruce Rauner will give that electorate something very different than what they will be expecting.===

Very well said. Good observation, it may be true, and either way, a Rauner as “Governor-Elect” will set that tone early as to who will be disappointed first.

  125. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Mar 5, 14 @ 8:21 am:

Rauner has it in the bag.

The three veteran losers can’t even beat Undecided.

Once Rauner wins next week, he reveals himself to be a moderate-liberal GOPer favoring a lot of the progressive agenda. Quinn - has nothing but a $50,000,000 scandal to deal with until election day.

  126. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 5, 14 @ 8:29 am:

    “Yep.

    In the bag.

    President Dewey”

    Gotta finish. Always gotta finish.

  127. - OneMan - Wednesday, Mar 5, 14 @ 8:35 am:

    Ok,

For those who saw it… The Dan answer to the sleep arrangements question…

Was he joking about separate rooms (due to the room sharing stuff with him) or not…

  128. - Lunchbox - Wednesday, Mar 5, 14 @ 10:48 am:

    OneMan-

I believe Rutherford was joking. I laughed out loud, either way.

  129. - Lunchbox - Wednesday, Mar 5, 14 @ 10:54 am:

In all of the forums, Bruce Rauner gives the same pre-packaged responses that involve “transformation” and “shake up.” I know he’s pressing his themes, but does that annoy any one else after a while? I am undecided between Dillard and Rauner. I know it probably doesn’t matter because it looks like Rauner is going to run up the score on March 18th, but I’ll watch tonight’s debate and probably the next one as well.
