Adventures in tracking

Thursday, Jul 24, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* A series of texts from someone on the Pat Quinn campaign…

FYI we just found Rauner’s tracker in the bathroom.

Again

In church where the gov is having event

Lol

…Adding… The Rauner campaign says the Quinnsters are “lying” and point to this Tweet as evidence that their tracker couldn’t even get inside today…

* There won’t be many tracker opportunities for Gov. Quinn’s folks at tomorrow’s Chris Christie events…

Republican Governors Association Chairman Chris Christie will travel to Chicago, IL this Friday to attend events for the RGA, GOP gubernatorial nominee Bruce Rauner, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

Friday, July 25

3:00PM: RGA Chairman Chris Christie attends an RGA finance event in Chicago, IL.

Press: CLOSED

4:15PM: RGA Chairman Chris Christie and GOP gubernatorial nominee Bruce Rauner attend a retail stop in Chicago, IL.

Press: OPEN; Availability to follow

For Press interested in attending, contact Lyndsey Walters at xxxx@xxxxx.com

5:00PM: RGA Chairman Chris Christie attends a fundraiser for GOP gubernatorial nominee Bruce Rauner in Chicago, IL.

6:30PM: RGA Chairman Chris Christie attends a fundraiser for Florida Gov. Rick Scott in Chicago, IL.

* Unless, of course, the Quinnsters try to emulate the Michigan Republicans. The Michigan GOP is using trackers who wear eyeglasses that contain a hidden camera in their frames. I kid you not and the GOP freely admits it

For the third time this year, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer is accusing Republicans of attempting to spy on his campaign.

But this time, the suspected political subterfuge involves a high-tech hidden camera and a video memory disk that fell into the hands of Democrats.

And Republicans are defending their campaign snooping.

Schauer’s campaign and Oakland County Democrats recently came into possession of a tiny disk containing raw video footage of a young woman and man who secretly recorded a Schauer campaign fundraiser June 22 at a private home in Bloomfield Hills.

* The Michigan Democrats posted some of the video they found on YouTube

===Chairman Chris Christie and GOP gubernatorial nominee Bruce Rauner attend a retail stop in Chicago, IL.===

    $50 says it’s a restaurant. Manny’s? Mr. Beef?

  2. - walker - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:03 pm:

I see a new comedy show on the horizon.

A mix of Get Smart and the Entourage.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:03 pm:

I go Billy Goat, Christie wants to be President, it’s as much about Christie as Rauner, if not more, and the Goat is for Presidential hopefuls .

  4. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:05 pm:

    Attention Rauner Crew;

    You’re creepy.

    Signed,

    Everyone looking under stalls.

    Dopes.

  5. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:06 pm:

Bet the retail stop won’t be at the Shops at North Bridge.

  6. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:08 pm:

The Billy Goat is a good call Willy.

  7. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:08 pm:

Garrett’s Popcorn is another good local stop, but I don’t think Christie would find it, um, sufficient.

  8. - RNUG - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:08 pm:

Rauner’s crew is doing their best to control his message and not let inadvertent comments made during meetings escape.

Rich hasn’t mentioned it yet, but the forthcoming RSEA meeting is closed to the public because Rauner is speaking; to attend you have to bring your July newsletter with your name and mailing address printed on it. Plus the ground rules don’t allow for questions from the floor, only questions submitted in advance to the RSEA Legislative Committee.

  9. - Soccermom - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:12 pm:

This Michigan video is great. Nicely done!

  10. - Anon. - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:12 pm:

I’m sure Christie is just trying to keep attendance down to avoid traffic tie-ups around his functions. He’s very sensitive about that kind of thing.

  11. - Mr. Big Trouble - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:13 pm:

Lame and boring video, but it does beg the question.. Is there a double agent involved here??

  12. - Soccermom - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:14 pm:

although it does go on a bit. But I guess the point is — these events can be soooooo boring…

  13. - Ginhouse Tommy - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:16 pm:

You know, stuff like that maybe cute and sly to the people who thought it up, but to the average everyday person on the street it is pure sleaze. It’s underhanded and low class for any candidate who tries it. You feel like telling these people to go buy some class, Big Lots has some on clearance. No wonder other states look at us and scratch their heads. Hate to be so bitter, but I expected better from candidates running for public office. Can it get any worse? Who’d these guys hire anyway, Beavis and Butthead?

  14. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:16 pm:

    - 47th Ward -, you were right, I wouldn’t have taken that bet, and to the Garret’s Popcorn, that would be real good too;

Small area, easy to make “crowded”, and while it won’t…”fill up” … Christie, it’s less of a messy food to be seen eating.

  15. - Norseman - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:22 pm:

Maybe the Raunervich tracker is just bathroom challenged.

  16. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:25 pm:

    - Norseman -,

    One word;

    Depends.

  17. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:32 pm:

==It’s underhanded and low class for any candidate who tries it. ==

It’s standard for virtually every size able campaign. Most people outside of political wonks don’t even know or don’t care

  18. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:33 pm:

Hey, if they’re asking for press credentials and the kid still got in, kudos to him!

  19. - liandro - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:37 pm:

I still haven’t been to Billy Goat, grrrr. Attempted several times and stuff always gets in the way.

  20. - ChinaTown - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:38 pm:

    @Ginhouse Tommy:

As Omar Little might say, it’s all in the game. Nothing sleazy or weird about a tracker.

  21. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:41 pm:

No reason to tie Rauner to what happened in Michigan. Even if you do have the video.

  22. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:43 pm:

===No reason to tie Rauner to what happened in Michigan===

    Another victim.

And, for the record, I didn’t tie it to Rauner, I tied it to Quinn.

  23. - Ginhouse Tommy - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:49 pm:

Chinatown I have a problem with a tracker hiding in the bathroom. Yes I know that it’s all apart of politics. but in the bathroom. Besides with this Governors track record how much more ammunition do they need? His record isn’t exactly spotless.

  24. - wordslinger - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 12:49 pm:

Geez, I have to tell you, I engage in SWAT-team like strategizing to minimize both my appearances and time in public restrooms.

Is this dude a veteran of a Larry Craig campaign or something?

  25. - corvax - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 1:17 pm:

and the MI spy identifies himself as a student at Brother Rice, one of the lesser all-male Catholic high schools in the Detroit area. Glad it wasn’t my alma mater!

  26. - Anonymous - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 2:22 pm:

One of the “kids” from Michigan Conor Quarton from Brother Rice used an alias of Connor Katcher….a classmate who died from cancer 3 years ago.

God Bless these 17 year old Catholic compassionate conservatives.

  27. - Formerly Known As... - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 2:59 pm:

If the Quinn and Rauner people don’t work out some ground rules, this free for all will only escalate from “bathroom stalkers” and “forceful evictions from the premises”.

They can stop this if they want to.

  28. - A guy... - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 3:00 pm:

The best way to spot a tracker is to assume anyone at a fundraiser or event under the age of 30 is either “tracking” or a Capitol Fax Nerd.

  29. - ChinaTown - Thursday, Jul 24, 14 @ 5:59 pm:

    @Ginhouse Tommy:

No, listen… I agree. That’s stupid. But when trackers do stupid sh*t, they get exposed and they embarrass their own candidate. I’m saying the PQ people are obsessed with day-to-day distractions and jump at any shiny ball, while they still have no clean narrative painted on Rauner’s forehead besides “rich” (and not even “bad/greedy/corrupt rich” just rich.)

Case in point re: the bathroom thing though, remember this from 2004?

Before he won the White House, then-state Sen. Barack Obama turned the tables on his initial 2004 U.S. Senate Republican opponent Jack Ryan, who had dispatched a young campaign worker to record Obama wherever he went. Obama led the tracker, camera rolling, into a roomful of Springfield statehouse reporters and introduced the guy as “my stalker,” saying the opponent’s campaign aide would follow him up to the bathroom door. The move established Obama as a victim of campaign tactics that were not just aggressive, but rude.

  30. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jul 25, 14 @ 12:37 pm:

You were all wrong. The event is at Portillo’s in River North.

  31. - Anonymous - Friday, Jul 25, 14 @ 1:03 pm:

–The event is at Portillo’s in River North.–

Whoa, talk about tempting poor Chris Christie! Anyone watching their weight shouldn’t be within a mile of that place. They makes shakes with cake at the bottom!

The Taj Mahal, the Sistine Chapel of the iconic Chicago hot dog stand. Many a happy memories there with my family.

Geez, now I want a combo with peppers, cheese fries and a shake.
