* From a Southern Illinoisan article about a dispute over debates between Bill Enyart and Mike Bost…
“Springfield insider Mike Bost has no answer as to why he thinks we should lower the minimum wage and make thousands of Southern Illinoisans suffer, while at the same time he takes a pay raise from taxpayers for $3,100. It is not surprising he is now backing out of every debate possible,” said Enyart campaign advisor Jason Bresler. […]
This is just another example of Beltway Bill trying to distract from his votes in favor of Obamacare, Nancy Pelosi and and Washington DC. Mike has fought Springfield politicians at every turn, anyone who says differently, hasn’t seen YouTube,” [Bost campaign spokesman Jim Forbes] challenged back.
Ugh.
For crying out loud, learn to talk like human beings. Nobody’s gonna tune into those quotes except people who are already insanely hyperpartisan.

I hate the paid Congressional staffers. I know some good people on both sides who are congressman, if you listened to the campaigns they ran you would think they were the worst people for the stuff their staff say about the other side. Drive me nuts. A reason I don’t do it anymore. That and to protect my liver, too much hard drinking in campaigns.

Sounds exactly like Bost in the House, just as it is, minus the shouting and the props.
Don’t know Enyart.

Where do people learn to talk that way?
Often, from highly partisan blogs and fundraising pleas– and both sides do it. And you’re right, Rich. It’s sickening and juvenile.

Campaign flacks are getting worse. Always trying to pack ten pounds of stuff in a five pound bag.
The goal is to be conversational and actually get quoted without sounding like a lunatic.

I blame the journalist as much as the staffers. Why even use that quote? How does it advance the story?
- Wensicia - Tuesday, Sep 2, 14 @ 4:37 pm:
I suppose the campaigns believe this nonsense coming from campaign staff doesn’t besmirch the candidates, themselves. They’d be wrong. It’s ugly and it turns people off, not towards the candidate they’re representing.

I blame West Wing (the tv show).

Where? See: DCCC, NRCC

I propose new and most rules of engagement to make this race more interesting.
Any and all attacks on Mike Bost must make reference to a varmint, preferably a coon, possum or squirrel, although reptiles are acceptable.
Any and all attacks on Enyart must make reference to a pastry, preferably french or Belgian.

Let them talk like this.
It lets candidates and campaigns that do know how to respectfully talk to voters, win more easily.
