- One To the Dome - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 7:56 pm:
Quinn did a nice pivot to Karen Lewis early on and nice to mention AA in his administration in leadership. Rauner couldnt/didnt name one AA (or percentages) of the number of AA in his firm. Rauner did come out more forcefull, but no knock out and still no details.
Having just watched the debate on my DVR…Rauner was markedly better than in Peoria. He was smoother in his answers and tripped over himself a lot less in his answers.
Was it just me, or when Quinn went on the attack, did the audience gasp? I noticed it when Quinn said Rauner talking about the minimum wage was “loose talk” and when Quinn brought up Rauner’s proposed service taxes. Thought it was interesting, since from the applause before the debate, it seemed like a pro-Quinn crowd.
and now DRauner is back on NBC with a commercial chiding us for attacking Bruce. Well, you just put yourself back in the mix again, and let’s start the tally on how much money you have given to conservative Republican causes DRauner.
===So the “winner” will be who had the most one-liners or phrases that will play well in ads and newscasts.===
They were playing to the newscasts and Ad Guys, yes.
If I were Rauner, I haveta be wondering why I didn’t debate more, with Quinn trying to play defense and offense to Rauner mostly on offense and laughing at attacks.
This was a “home” game for Quinn, and an “away” for Rauner. Quinn had his second man in the audience and the cadence of most of his answers proved it. You could tell Rauner was uncomfortable and yet handled himself well in spite of that. I think both candidates were able to get away with avoiding the questions too easily, but Rauner seemed to have fewer answers than Quinn. Quinn had better one liners theoughout, and his attacks were engaging and humorous. Rauner’s attacks seemed more nasty, which may end up backfiring, particularly with the undecided suburban women they are both courting. And his smirk, again, is really distracting. What is up with that?
Rauner is usually a smart , slick speaker but his demeanor hurt him. His discomfort on specific questions, especially about his business travails, is unsettling to watch. Quinn by contrast demonstrates a command and comfort with issues, although he sometimes has a pained expression on his face. You can tell he takes the gravity and pressures of the office seriously.
It isn’t simply due to a lack of interest: The debate wasn’t televised in the “netherlands.” And there are still many places in the state where internet speeds render live feeds pretty useless. One-liners and sounds bites are all we get.
Has anyone payed attention to Quinn’s mannerisms during these debates? It’s has if he’s going to lay egg. Just watching these two debates, it’s no wonder Illinois is in the mess its in.
Quinn pointed out he paid the full amount to the pension systems each year he has been governor. He may be counting the state contributions to TRS and SURS as part of education spending.
Rauner carefully worded an answer saying he would direct the dollars into the classroom. That might mean he plans to resume diverting the pension contributions to other uses as has been done before.
- Mighty M. Mouse - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 12:39 am:
===laughing at attacks===
You’re right, Willy, I don’t think a man with the type of personality that Rauner has can be hurt by ANY kind of attack.
He’s like the Terminator in that respect. Utterly fearless, a bully without much compunction and without any conscience.
” elect Bruce Rauner as the next Governor of the great state of Illinois”
Y’know, to hear Rauner talk, Illinois is actually a pretty terrible state.
…which is whatever; I get that the challenger always has to do the “two minutes to Armageddon and we’re fighting for the lord”, thing, but guys like Bush and Reagan always just made it seem like, “Hey, it’s okay, you made a mistake by electing this one guy, but we’re stronger than him, we will prevail.” Rauner basically implicates everyone, including “his” party, and says the people who vote for them are pretty suspect, too.
Rauner was much better in this debate than the first.
As to supporters/demonstrators outside the debate, in Peoria the Quinn demonstrators were profane and agitators. Rauner’s were peaceful and showed a great deal of restraint. No idea on last night’s debate.
Pat Quinn really is clueless about the sad economic condition of the state. He could pass a polygraph when he says the economy in Illinois is in really good shape. He doesn’t comprehend anything about the high rate of unemployment—relative to other states. Quinn either doesn’t know or doesn’t care that there are areas in the State, most right under his nose, where the black and Hispanic unemployment rates are 40% or higher. Quinn either doesn’t know or care that fewer than 25% of the black and Hispanic 4th graders in the Chicago Public Schools read at grade level—and that is not a spending problem because we are spending an average of $15,000 per kid per year in CPS. None of the questions probed or challenged Quinn on these issues last night. Those journalists couldn’t probe or challenge a Democratic Party politician if their lives depended on it. Really.

Are videos of these debates posted anywhere?
If so, could Rich pretty please post links?
- One To the Dome - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 7:56 pm:
Quinn did a nice pivot to Karen Lewis early on and nice to mention AA in his administration in leadership. Rauner couldnt/didnt name one AA (or percentages) of the number of AA in his firm. Rauner did come out more forcefull, but no knock out and still no details.

new game for everyone to play….Where’s Evelyn?
- Lunchbox - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 8:40 pm:
Having just watched the debate on my DVR…Rauner was markedly better than in Peoria. He was smoother in his answers and tripped over himself a lot less in his answers.
Was it just me, or when Quinn went on the attack, did the audience gasp? I noticed it when Quinn said Rauner talking about the minimum wage was “loose talk” and when Quinn brought up Rauner’s proposed service taxes. Thought it was interesting, since from the applause before the debate, it seemed like a pro-Quinn crowd.

Slam dunk for Rauner! 2 Wins - Rauner / 2 Losses Quinn.
Quinn never answered the last question.
- Del Clinkton - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 9:15 pm:
Bruce, just so arrogant.
- Amalia - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 9:15 pm:
and now DRauner is back on NBC with a commercial chiding us for attacking Bruce. Well, you just put yourself back in the mix again, and let’s start the tally on how much money you have given to conservative Republican causes DRauner.
- Hotel Ibiza - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 9:20 pm:
The voters of Illinois will do the right and responsible thing and that is elect Bruce Rauner as the next Governor of the great state of Illinois.
- Whatever - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 9:35 pm:
Chances are, few people watched - especially undecideds - and regardless of either candidate’s performance, few votes were impacted. Sad.
- walker - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 9:35 pm:
almost no one watched it versus other popular shows and the MLB playoffs.
So the “winner” will be who had the most one-liners or phrases that will play well in ads and newscasts.
The “loser” will be who made an equally short faux-pas.
- Beetlejuice - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 9:35 pm:
Quinn “debates” exactly like he’s run the state straight into the dumper
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 9:40 pm:
===So the “winner” will be who had the most one-liners or phrases that will play well in ads and newscasts.===
They were playing to the newscasts and Ad Guys, yes.
If I were Rauner, I haveta be wondering why I didn’t debate more, with Quinn trying to play defense and offense to Rauner mostly on offense and laughing at attacks.
- Illinoise - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 9:45 pm:
- Dirty Red - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:00 pm:
Rauner using Harold Washington…AGAIN? Let the man rest in peace!
- Brookport Brandon - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:07 pm:
Rauner is usually a smart , slick speaker but his demeanor hurt him. His discomfort on specific questions, especially about his business travails, is unsettling to watch. Quinn by contrast demonstrates a command and comfort with issues, although he sometimes has a pained expression on his face. You can tell he takes the gravity and pressures of the office seriously.
- Jeanne Dough - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:13 pm:
“Chances are, few people watched.”
It isn’t simply due to a lack of interest: The debate wasn’t televised in the “netherlands.” And there are still many places in the state where internet speeds render live feeds pretty useless. One-liners and sounds bites are all we get.
- Beetlejuice - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:14 pm:
Has anyone payed attention to Quinn’s mannerisms during these debates? It’s has if he’s going to lay egg. Just watching these two debates, it’s no wonder Illinois is in the mess its in.
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:20 pm:
===The debate wasn’t televised in the “netherlands.” ===
Hinterlands is the word I think you’re looking for.
Most Illinoisans live in the Chicago media market.
- Jeanne Dough - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 10:50 pm:
“Hinterlands is the word I think you’re looking for.”
Yes, it was. . . making it painfully obvious that the rest of us need to be educated as well.
- DuPage - Tuesday, Oct 14, 14 @ 11:42 pm:
Quinn pointed out he paid the full amount to the pension systems each year he has been governor. He may be counting the state contributions to TRS and SURS as part of education spending.
Rauner carefully worded an answer saying he would direct the dollars into the classroom. That might mean he plans to resume diverting the pension contributions to other uses as has been done before.
- Mighty M. Mouse - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 12:39 am:
===laughing at attacks===
You’re right, Willy, I don’t think a man with the type of personality that Rauner has can be hurt by ANY kind of attack.
He’s like the Terminator in that respect. Utterly fearless, a bully without much compunction and without any conscience.
- Adlai - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 8:13 am:
- Peoria guy - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 8:15 am:
Rauner was much better in this debate than the first.
As to supporters/demonstrators outside the debate, in Peoria the Quinn demonstrators were profane and agitators. Rauner’s were peaceful and showed a great deal of restraint. No idea on last night’s debate.
- Hotel Ibiza - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 8:44 am:
Really.
- Demoralized - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 8:59 am:
@Hotel:
How much is the Rauner campaign paying you to troll blogs? Just curious.
- Del Clinkton - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 9:01 am:
Journalists don’t “probe” or “challenge” the Republican Party very much either. Really.
- Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 9:27 am:
Actually, it was televised in the hinterlands. On a one-hour tape delay on WCIA’s sister station.
