Whether or not removing the sunset clause constitutes a tax increase is a matter of conjecture. Some listeners will think, “Quinn’s not 100 years old — What the heck are they talking about?” Others will wonder if the out of context quote is as suspicious as the 100 years claim. In either case, the goofy math distracts and detracts from the message. Pretty easy to do, since we have Quinn’s doomsday budget(s) as a guideline. Laid off employees, less school funding, State sinking further into debt, even worse bond rating downgrades, etc. After describing all the cuts that would have happened, it could close with something like “that’s what would have happened without the tax increase” or “that’s what Rauner wants for the State” Actually, what we voters deserve and apparently won’t see this election cycle is an honest discussion about what services the State should be providing, the amount of revenue needed to support those services, and the best method(s) of raising said revenue. - Gooner - Wednesday, Oct 15, 14 @ 1:29 pm: That ad would be far more effective if Rauner would tell us his plan for tax rates for next year or the following. Everyone I have talked to who has heard this ad, (all of four of my suburban neighbors LOL) told me that Quinn would raise income taxes higher than they are today. They are all former Democratic voters, at least some of the time. Others around me have reminded me that our property taxes would be frozen by Rauner. Hardly representative samples. Governor Quinn has proposed extending the current income tax not raising it. The current 5% tax will be temporary if a more fair graduated or progressive tax can be passed. Quinn did not promise that he would not raise taxes in 2010 or 2014. I consider myself an independent voter, though I do lean left. Here’s my opinion of this ad, which I hear quite often while driving in my car: it makes no sense to me. “After 100 years of failure…” Pat Quinn has been governor for 100 years? I assume that maybe the Democrats have been in control of the state for 100 years, but I have no real idea. “November or December…” Again, that means nothing to me, largely because it’s such a small quote that it almost has to be taken out of context.
