Question of the day

Friday, Nov 21, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* One of the items on Governor-elect Bruce Rauner’s agenda yesterday was a tour of the Executive Mansion with his wife Diana. I asked the transition team how it went. From Mike Schrimpf:

Bruce and Diana are excited and looking forward to moving to Springfield. Clearly there’s some work that needs to be done on the people’s house and Bruce has committed to raising private funds to make the necessary repairs.

Not much to go on there.

* The Question: What do you think their reaction really was?

Hey, it’s Friday. Let’s have some fun.

Quick - more pension fund contributions. This place needs WORK!

  8. - PublicServant - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:53 am:

If Jane Byrne can move into Cabrini, we can move in here!

  9. - Earnest - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:53 am:

No wonder Quinn was always using a Super 8 Motel card.

  10. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:53 am:

“Bruce, tell the realtor, we’d like to see more options…”

  11. - Gator - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:54 am:

Can we just sleep in the van?

  12. - Oswego Willy - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:54 am:

“Bruce, you’re on your own, I didn’t sign up for this part…”

  13. - Pot calling kettle - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:55 am:

Well, if we give it equal time with our other houses, its only a little over a month a year.

  14. - Oo - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:55 am:

sounds like a 4-year fundraising and renovation project before we can “officially” move in.

  15. - Skeptical - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:55 am:

“Not too bad when you consider it’s in Springfield.”

  16. - Anonymous - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:56 am:

They were probably appalled by the current administrations lack of respect for this iconic home of the people.

  17. - MEP - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:57 am:

Any way we can trick Evelyn into thinking the “co-governor” should live here?

  18. - Pot calling kettle - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:58 am:

Why are all the wines in the cellar from vineyards we’ve never heard of? I mean, Alto Vineyards? Galena Cellars? August Hill?

  19. - Leatherneck - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:58 am:

I still see calendars from January 2003 hanging on the walls.

  20. - Oo - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 10:59 am:

Is it only because he is a billionaire that we don’t immediately perk up at the thought of private donations to renovate the governor’s house?

  21. - Pot calling kettle - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:00 am:

I wonder if staying in the Montana house counts as “living downstate?”

  22. - Anonymous - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:00 am:

“Roof’s leaking…yep just as I suspected, it’s waste, corruption, and inefficiency causing it. Schrimpf, get someone to hammer and shake that, will you.”

  23. - uptown progressive - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:00 am:

“Quaint. Think of it as camping in a state park.”

  24. - Been There - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:01 am:

===What do you think their reaction really was?===
I’m more interested in what Borland actually said to them. He’s always the professional and does a great job but he’s not one to hold back.

  25. - Leatherneck - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:03 am:

I will call all 4 of the following: Comcast, AT&T U-Verse, Direct TV and Dish Network to order/install all these cable and satellite services at the mansion. I’ll tell them I want the package that includes each and every channel offered on their lineups.

  26. - Wordslinger - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:07 am:

    Needs a moat.

  27. - hisgirlfriday - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:08 am:

Why can’t Bruce pay for the house repairs out of pocket? It surely can’t cost him more than he spent on the campaign.

Just think its odd for somebody who made it such a big point that he’s got too much money to be bought that he’s gonna go around asking other rich people to buy him a renovated residence.

  28. - Wensicia - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:08 am:

    “What a dump!”

  29. - Loop Lady - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:09 am:

I can’t believe I’m expected to deal with this and Mike
    Madigan too…I think I have buyers remorse….

  30. - Anonymous - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:10 am:

Can we just make the state Capitol Winnetka , and the are house can be the Governors mansion ?

  31. - Working night and day... - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:11 am:

Wow! Did-ja-notice? The “Lincoln Bedroom” even has a its own special home-made sign - “Leaking Bedroom.”

  35. - BDuty6 - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:16 am:

    @Working night and day…
You’re probably joking with your comment, but that’s actually not a horrible idea to get some good publicity. Especially if Bruce does pay for a good chunk of the renovations himself. You cant’t tell me HGTV would turn down the opportunity to have one of their shows come in and renovate the White House of Illinois, as they’re sure to call it in their promos.

  36. - Anyonymous77 - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:17 am:

    “Where’s the car elevator?”

  37. - Richard Afflis - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:17 am:

we did all this to move into a small house in a bad neighborhood?
At least we will get the million dollar tax cut.

  52. - Marty Funkhouser - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:47 am:

“I think this building should be condemned. There’s serious metal fatigue in all the load-bearing members, the wiring is substandard, it’s completely inadequate for our power needs, and the neighborhood is like a demilitarized zone.”

  54. - OneMan - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:48 am:

  55. - Leatherneck - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:48 am:

Now that we’re in Springfield, does anyone know where the C. Montgomery Burns mansion is? I wonder if he’s interested in any buyers now.

  56. - OneMan - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 11:49 am:

    Press releases:

    1) The budget is worse than I thought, we’ll need to keep the income tax at 5% for awhile.
    2) The mansion is worse than I thought, we’ll need to keep living in Winnetka for awhile.
    3) The ______ is worse than I thought, we’ll need to keep _______ for a while.

So much for shaking things up.

  67. - the Truth - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 12:12 pm:

Diane: “Honey, it smells like death in here.”
Bruce: “Just like my old folk’s homes.”

  68. - crazybleedingheart - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 12:26 pm:

Darling, The People’s House just reminded me why we try so hard to avoid fraternizing with The People.

  69. - Harry - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 12:27 pm:

Gee, this place looks like no one’s lived here for about 12 years.

  70. - Keyser Soze - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 12:36 pm:

On a serious note, the curator was very impressed with the Rauners and their plans for the mansion. Word on the street in Springfield is that the City is delighted that State government is returning to the Capitol. It is even rumored that department heads will be required to live in the City. If so, bye bye three day work weeks with two travel days.

  71. - Ducky LaMoore - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 12:37 pm:

It’s The People’s House. So donate to the Human Fund…. Money for People.

Governors Mansion is the place to be.
Republican in a BLUE state fantasy.
    Our election couldn’t be denied.
Looks like we’re stuck in this pig’s sty.

Winnetka was the place that I was told!
I am allergic to all this black mold!
I’m not liking this, I’m not amused!
Darling make this mansion nice, or I’ll refuse.

    The deal!
    No appeal!
    Grow a pair!
    What’s a State Fair?

    You are my wife.
    Don’t gamble my life!
    Governors Mansion we are here!

  78. - 618662dem - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 1:21 pm:

    Of Bruce how quaint

  79. - Cheswick - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 1:26 pm:

    Reaction: What a dump.

Aside: I drove by there yesterday evening and I was surprised to notice the lights on in the private residence. So, either they neglected to turn the lights off when done with the tour, or someone was staying there last night.

  80. - Jake From Elwood - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 1:27 pm:

First thing we gotta do is remove the White Sox posters from the walls and the Diet Shasta and old takeout orders from the frig! But let’s keep this Mike Madigan dartboard right where it is.

  81. - Third Reading - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 1:31 pm:

#1: “Diana, dear, I’ve got it. I’ve got it! We’ll simply move into the Dana-Thomas House and call THAT the Governor’s Mansion!”

#2: “And you say it comes complete with the house next door? The Vachel Lindsay House? Oh, I remember, Lindsay was Illinois’ first governor!”

#3: “How ’bout this, Schrimpf? In lieu of per diems, we’ll turn this dump into a dormitory, and make all the members of the General Assembly stay here!”

    I’m outta here.

  82. - Robert the Bruce - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 1:36 pm:

“What public school boundaries are we in?” (laughter)

  83. - Stones - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 1:43 pm:

“Who left this purple tie in the drawer?”

  84. - Stones - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 1:50 pm:

“This dump is way too far from Lake Springfield. Where do they expect me to moor my yacht!”

  85. - A modest proposal - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 2:14 pm:

“I feel like its been decades since someone actually lived”

  86. - KGB - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 2:47 pm:

Let’s sell this shack and toss the money toward the budget hole. I saw a little place with it’s own golf course west of here…Illini Country Club.

  87. - West Side the Best Side - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 2:53 pm:

“Looks like the lawn hasn’t been mowed in months.”

  88. - 13thone - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 3:20 pm:

    Diana to Bruce:
Bruce be a dear and kepp the motorcoach just awhile longer, won’t you?
Bruce under his breath: (Damn democrat)Yes dear

  89. - siriusly - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 3:28 pm:

    “This place is a dump.”
“Yeah. Honey maybe you should call Arne Duncan to see if he can get us into the better Governor’s Mansion.”

  90. - Rollo Tomasi - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 4:00 pm:

Madigan would not live in here, Cullerton would not live here, I would not live here, but it wool’s make a perfect halfway house for Blago and Jessie Jr. when they get out of jail.

But it does have a lot of parking for my cycles!

  91. - Cabildero - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 4:05 pm:

Probably not a bad idea to get a home remodeling show in there to offset costs. This old Guv’s mansion.

  92. - THEGUN - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 4:23 pm:

Whats with all the purple ties?

  93. - Soccermom - Friday, Nov 21, 14 @ 5:08 pm:

I actually love the idea of working with HGTV to do a show on restoring the Mansion.

  94. - Hoosier - Tuesday, Nov 25, 14 @ 7:40 am:

Any post suggesting that he should pay for repairs himself is a hack. The Governor’s residence hasn’t been maintained…but let’s not focus on how embarrassing that is! Instead, let’s scream and yell about how the new guy isn’t going to spend tax dollars to fix it!
