Cook Dems refuse to slate US Senate candidate

Wednesday, Aug 19, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the twitters…

At the risk of being quoted in an ILGOP press release, that’s not great news for Duckworth. At all.

However…

If he stays in, he could be competitive. The guy is personally wealthy and has lots of rich friends from his NFL days. But he’s not the greatest organizer. He was lucky not to get kicked off the ballot last time around, so we’ll see what sort of staff he hires.

* Biss never did have a shot at the nod, and he knew it…

* Heh…

Um, OK.

Considering this state’s horrific national reputation, I’m kinda doubting that phrase will find its way to a campaign bumper sticker.

Lisa Madigans quote was Sheila Simon worthy

  2. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 11:29 am:

It’s almost a badge of honor to not receive party slating these days. In my neck of the woods, Duckworth, Biss and Fritchey are going to do just fine with the voters, in part because they don’t have the stench of being the slated candidate on them.

Voters who can think for themselves don’t need a party apparatus to tell them who to vote for, and they often resent anyone telling them who to vote for.

Ouch. Lisa Madigan is usually smarter than that.

Quite a smack at Tammy Duckworth, too. Among the best news Senator Kirk’s campaign could get.

  4. - Senator Clay Davis - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 11:32 am:

Biss should stay in the Senate anyway. We need smart people like him in the General Assembly far more than we need them in the Comptroller’s office.

(No offense to my friends in that office)

  5. - 42nd ward guy - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 11:45 am:

Looks like the duck worth party might be over

  6. - Dan from Dupage - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 11:50 am:

Obviously Durbin making calls on her behalf didn’t add up.

  7. - Chicago Cynic - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 11:54 am:

Speaker Madigan doesn’t like Senator Durbin messing around in IL politics. Duckworth is Durbin’s candidate. The math is pretty simple.

  8. - Tom B. - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 11:57 am:

Don’t agree at all on the bad news for Duckworth. They aren’t thrilled I’m sure, but they don’t need this to win and Zopp does. She worked the vote hard for this and didn’t make it. And she had strong African American backing.

If you’re an African American from Chicago running against suburbanites and you can’t get Cook to go with you, that says something.

  9. - The Way I See It - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 12:04 pm:

Shame that Biss did not get nomination. Don’t know much about Mendoza but a guy as sharp as he is on money issues deserves a bigger platform.

  10. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 12:08 pm:

Does Harris have anything going for him but money and ambition? I mean, has he actually accomplished anything in the Illinois Senate?

  11. - Archiesmom - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 12:14 pm:

Napoleon Harris? Really? I thought his game plan was two terms in the state Senate before moving up. :)

  12. - Wordslinger - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 12:27 pm:

Meh, it’s a paper tiger, but traditions die hard.

Those with effective organizations, they’re all free agents, anyway.

  13. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 12:41 pm:

Actually if you have an organization, this is best time you call your shot and price. It made these organizations, handful that they are, much more valuable.

  14. - walker - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 1:38 pm:

Tom B. Has it right. Duckworth supporters in the room considered it a win.

  15. - sideline watcher - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 2:41 pm:

I don’t know. I think after Durbin’s and the DSC’s early endorsement, (which was designed to somehow clear the field for Duckworth) the win actually goes to Zopp. She successfully prevented an early coordination of Duckworth. Believe me if Tammy had gotten the endorsement, they would have had serious momentum.

  16. - sideline watcher - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 2:41 pm:

Sorry. Early coronation is what I meant.

  17. - Gooner - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 2:54 pm:

They also declined on SA. Alvarez has her work cut out for her. Her best case is a large field.

They gave the nod to D. Brown though, who may well be the single least competent elected official in Illinois.

  18. - anon - Wednesday, Aug 19, 15 @ 5:59 pm:

Biss is more qualified for the job than Mendoza who is nothing but a shill for Speaker Madigan. Further, in a General Election, Biss is the better candidate. Too many negatives when folks see that she is a Madigan soldier, and her name recognition will not help her outside Chicago.

    What anon said.
