Impeachment call rebuked

Thursday, Sep 24, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Monique…

* And, yes, we have video. GOP Rep. Ed Sullivan was rightly outraged at Sherman’s goofiness and Democratic Rep. Greg Harris correctly disassociated himself from the comments

Also, FYI, just a warning, if you agree with Sherman you most certainly have that right but you’ll probably get yourself banned for life for being a silly troll.

  2. - Wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 12:47 pm:

Clearly, Sherman was on a mission from. God.

What were they supposed to be talking about?

  3. - Norseman - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 12:48 pm:

Why aren’t the Dems disassociating themselves from this outrageous impeachment suggestion? Oh wait, they did disassociate themselves from it.

    Beat you to it Raunerbots.

  4. - Ducky LaMoore - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 12:50 pm:

Okay rob, what laws did he break that call for an impeachment? Moron.

  5. - Honeybear - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 12:50 pm:

It’s good that he got shut down. Super important that the democratic process be preserved and protected.

  6. - PublicServant - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 12:57 pm:

Sherman was serious. He said so, himself. Just like the guy I pass every so often who is certain the end is nigh!

  7. - Hoping for Rational Thought - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 12:57 pm:

Rep. Greg Harris continues to demonstrate what it means to be a statesman and all around class act.

  8. - A Jack - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:00 pm:

As much as I dislike the way he is governing, the Governor has not done anything that would be impeachable.

Indeed, part of the problem is that he has done his homework, and understands the laws quite well. He likes to push the limits, but will back off before crossing any lines. The union dues withholding is one example of this, while the delayed layoffs are another. He certainly enjoys tweaking people’s noses, but nothing impeachable and neither is he likely to fall into that trap.

  9. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:01 pm:

Shaking up Springfield means different things to different people.

  11. - HL Mencken - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:12 pm:

Wait—Dems have an obligation to disassociate themselves from crazy comments from Rob Sherman. Is that like the obligations Republicans have to disassociate themselves from crazy comments from people like Joe Walsh and Ted Cruz, just to name two?

  12. - illinoised - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:12 pm:

I agree with atheism (Dog is my co-pilot) but don’t agree with impeachment. Does that get me banned?

  13. - illinoised - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:13 pm:

If it doesn’t get me banned, then my Rottweiler is indeed all powerful.

  14. - W.S. Wolcott - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:16 pm:

I think Sherman may have done this just to make Rich “moderate” all day. He won’t get much traction here. It will, however, be interesting to see how much coverage he gets from the local tv affiliates and/or the papers.

  15. - AC - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:29 pm:

If incompetence were illegal or impeachable, we’d have sent many of our elected officials to prison, for something other than violating the law. Personally, I’d have impeached Edgar for the pension ramp, and Blago just for being himself. The world isn’t what we wish it to be, and that might actually be a good thing. What’s great about the high bar we have set for impeachment or recall is that someday, we may actually learn to make better choices in the next election, right after the Cubs win the world series 20 times in a row.

  16. - Cheryl44 - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:31 pm:

I would prefer Bruce Rauner were not our governor. And I do not believe in a higher power. That being said, Rob Sherman shouldn’t be wasting people’s time like that.

  17. - Jack Stephens - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:37 pm:

    @HL:

    Agreed. Completely.

  18. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:46 pm:

Bruce Rauner has done nothing impeachable.

    Zero.

I’d work strongly against such a move.

Finding the GOP members to sign off on the move? Not even in the realm of impossible possibilities.

Rauner is actually counting on these types to feed his base. This talk helps Rauner, if ya can believe it, lol

  19. - hh - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 1:49 pm:

    Rich Miller is satan

  20. - LizPhairTax - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 2:06 pm:

FWIW, Rob Sherman has a pretty sweet RV parked at the Capitol. F-750! Seriously, it looks sweet. You’ll be able to spot it pretty easily.

  21. - Shark Sandwich - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 2:43 pm:

“Finding the GOP members to sign off on the move? Not even in the realm of impossible possibilities.”

    Technically, they don’t need ANY?- 39 is > 2/3 of 58, right?

You could argue that withholding Fair Share was impeachable, he is sworn to uphold the laws, the law is ‘Shall’ pay to dues. But.
He stopped when challenged on it, complying with the law. It’s closer than ‘imbalanced board appointments’, but not by much.

  22. - 4 percent - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 2:44 pm:

Love how he tried throwing Cullerton under the bus. “I’m working with Senate President Cullerton….

  23. - Team America - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 2:52 pm:

@4 Percent - that’s not throwing Cullerton under the bus, that’s called “appeal to authority” (from my logic class textbook). He (Sherman) was obviously seeking legitimacy. Wait for Cullerton’s disassociation statement in 3…2…1

  24. - Team America - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 2:52 pm:

And good on Ed Sullivan. He is going to be missed.

  25. - Ghost - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 3:00 pm:

I disagree with the gov on many things; but he has not done anything worthy of impeachment, not even remotely.

Now if there was a vote of Confidence option….

  26. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 3:00 pm:

    ===Technically, they don’t need ANY?- 39 is > 2/3 of 58, right?===

    What does “58″ mean?

You may need to show your work.

    Further,

No political party will commence impeachment hearings without significant support of the other party. That’s the politics of it.

  27. - Chicago 20 - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 3:44 pm:

Rauner’s use of gift cards during his campaign may well be an impeachable offense.

It would be an interesting trial if Sherman’s prayers are answered.

  28. - Skeptic - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 4:21 pm:

“It would be an interesting trial if Sherman’s prayers are answered.” Considering he’s an atheist, that would indeed be interesting.

  29. - Grandson of Man - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 4:24 pm:

I learned a big lesson in supporting Gov. Walker’s recall, how dumb it was. There are regularly-scheduled elections for a reason.

Impeachments and recalls should be used only for gravely serious violations of public trust.

  30. - Old and Tired - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 4:26 pm:

One comment: Sherman is, rightfully, considered a disruptive loon for treating hearings like this. What does that make Rauner’s legislative liaison Goldberg, who mocks proceedings, disrupts, and talks over Senators like a petulant child?

  31. - C.L. Ball - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 5:57 pm:

An “impeachable offense” is anything the House resolves is impeachable. In 1929 an OK gov was impeached, tried, & convicted of general incompetence (see http://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry.php?entry=JO015 )

  32. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 6:15 pm:

    - C.L. Ball -

    We’re not Oklahoma

  33. - Dome Gnome - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 8:17 pm:

Every night, as I sleep, I dream of two things: 1) to eat ice cream with impunity and 2) to coronate somebody new into the executive office. Yet, by day, I also dream of a world in which cooler heads prevail. Reps. Sullivan & Tryon are (should be) well-compensated professionals. I have no idea who Rob Sherman is or isn’t, but I do know that he isn’t paid by the General Assembly to absorb ideas (however radical) from the public. And, let’s face it, impeachment is a political concept and option, however unfeasible or unrealistic. Shouting and/or huffing away isn’t in a representative’s job description.

  34. - Property of IDOC - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 9:20 pm:

    Grandson of Man @ 4:24pm
” gravely serious violations of public trust”,
you mean, like Rauner’s entire campaign, his complete -often premeditated- incompetence, and the willful neglect of his official duties thus far?
Thant sums it up for my portion of public trust.

  35. - Blue dog dem - Thursday, Sep 24, 15 @ 11:20 pm:

Nobody south of Sprinfield gives a darn about impeachment. Fact of the matter is we just heard about this Nixon fella….

  36. - Anonymous - Friday, Sep 25, 15 @ 6:28 am:

Any Governor that does not show up for Do-Processes should be impeached. Everyone should atleast be listened to and validated when it come’s to our elderly, disabled and children.
