There’s a difference in how young people view things than grizzly veterans, that’s for sure. Millions of her contemporaries possess the precious right to vote. If they saw it as more of an obligation, you could see 177 posts like this every day. lol

  5. - RNUG - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 9:53 am:

Should we envision them as armed camps? Will they be throwing typewriters at each other … or just pencils? Folding up paper press releases as paper airplanes and launching them? Or just sending up hot air trial balloons?

Willy should have copyrighted his Illinois as an HBO series idea.

  8. - Tournaround Agenda - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 9:56 am:

Dave Bakke totally stole Oswego Willy’s concept. Willy, I hope you sue.

  9. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 9:58 am:

    A sitcom?

    I can’t see it..,

  10. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 9:58 am:

    “Dear Dave Bakke,

My name is Willy, I live in Oswego and I enjoy your work.

It appears some of your suggested sitcom ideas border on the highly regarded, yet to be nominated semi-mocumentary sitcom “Dad’s Home State”, found on the Faux HBO, see local dates and times.

I would not want to get the WGA involved, I wouldn’t want to do such a move, all I’m really saying is I enjoy your work.

    Sincerely,

    Willy”

I really tried to respond to state Representative Avery Bourne in a thoughtful manner, but she dragged me into the Dorm Room by the second sentence.

Youth is not being wasted on the wrong person in this case…

    Next post:
“Why do they call them political ‘parties’? I don’t see anyone having any fun in the Capitol.”

  22. - Gentlemen, behold! - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:14 am:

So, she is not exactly sitting around in an office drinking scotch and smoking cigars. It’s not the deepest political thought, but I’ve noticed that criticism of Avery Bourne has an undertone that feels more personal and petty than the criticisms launched at others. If we are going to call pols out on their Facebook posts, I’ve got a long list of ones from the “cigar and scotch” crew, like endless selfies and stirring quotations from Robert Frost. The road less traveled? Oh wow, so deep. Let’s judge Avery Bourne from the totality of her Facebook posts, which on the whole appear to be what they should be.

  23. - Homer J. Quinn - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:16 am:

so hilarious! please quit your day job.

  24. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:17 am:

Now, state Rep. Bourne, “Ever wonder why a district is a certain color on a map? Why blue? Why not green? Yellow? Maybe the district takes on the personality of the color they are on the map? Like, green, is your district ‘chill’, or red is like ‘hot’ about things and stuff… I look at the colors in wonderment.”

  25. - AC - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:17 am:

Sorry OW, I don’t care who gets credit for “Dad’s Home State” as long as John Lithgow plays Bruce Rauner.

  26. - Chairman McBroom - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:17 am:

What is the point of this post, exactly? Not Rep. Bourne’s FB post, but this particular Capitol Fax post? Nothing will come of this, but antagonizing Rep. Bourne for being lighthearted. GA members are people too…

  27. - Robert Lincoln - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:19 am:

Nothing wrong with law student on leave Bourne that ” Boot Camp ” , a couple years in the real Military ( Not NG or Resrv.) , 10 + years of Work , Responsibility , Life Experience and Hard Knocks wouldn’t cure. Then ask her what “Camp” she’s in ?

I’m pretty sure that when you post something on Facebook the hope is that many people will see it and comment on it.

  39. - Worth It - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:34 am:

I like her comment, and I am surprised by some of the negative comments and glad to see some of the light-hearted ones, especially after the past year. Her perspective seems to be better than that of a young smug newbie that acts like they know everything about everything. And I’d prefer it to the cantankerous attitude as well.

BTW: I’d watch out for Rand’s camp, some of his dad’s Paulestinians can’t make up their minds between Rand and Bernie, which to me is scary on multiple levels.

  40. - Team Sleep - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:38 am:

I’ve known Avery for years. She’s got a good sense of humor about her.

Willy - come on, dude. Are you really going to give her the Jason Plummer treatment? She’s a lot more “with it” than young Mr. Plummer - who’s not really “young” anymore.

  41. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:39 am:

@FakeAveryBourne - Someone help. I just found out my voting key isn’t my meal plan pass. I’m pretty sure I’m on the meal plan, where’s Legislators Services located #CampusLife

  42. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:41 am:

    - Team Sleep -

    Nah.

I was giving her a pass because she wasn’t Plummer, but if thin-skinned fans of hers want, I can.

Let’s see how these first few go…

==Willy - come on, dude. Are you really going to give her the Jason Plummer treatment? She’s a lot more “with it” than young Mr. Plummer - who’s not really “young” anymore.==

One is up and coming with a future, the other is clinging to a memory of political relevancy that no longer exists outside of here. Best to just let him live in his world

  44. - Anon - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:48 am:

It’s official, everyone on here is wound way to tight. Lighten up. Heaven forbid we attempt to find the humor in anything.

  45. - Team Sleep - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:48 am:

Willy - hey, do what you want. But having spent significant time around both of them, Ms. Bourne is clearly head-and-shoulders above Mr. Plummer. Figuratively, of course…

  46. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:50 am:

===One is up and coming with a future, the other is clinging to a memory of political relevancy that no longer exists outside of here. Best to just let him live in his world===

    - Team Sleep -,

    See what I mean.

@FakeAveryBourne - On days I know I’m voting “No, no, no” I wear red nail polish so I remember that it’s not the issue, it’s matching pretty color button Bruce wants #Simple

  47. - COPN - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:52 am:

The first three posts accurately summarize what follows

  48. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:54 am:

    @FakeAveryBourne - What’s confusing in the House is the Dems-GOP and that’s that. I find myself wondering “Where’s Hufflepuff? Where’s Ravenclaw?” “Where’s Dumbledore?” #SortingHat

  49. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 10:54 am:

Avery, the term “camps” when applied to politics - is literal. Camps are temporary gatherings of like minded people. Gold camps are filled with young men digging for wealth. Nudist camps are filled with people who want to enjoy life sans clothing. Scout camps are filled with young people discovering outdoor skills. RV camps are filled with seniors filling their bucket list before ascending to their final camp in the sky.

Political camps are filled with young people digging for wealth, fame and fortune. They are willing to get naked and sell their souls to the highest bidders. Their learn about how to dig for oppositional dirt on opponents. They fill their bucket list when they convince the AARP crowd to support their candidates.

When the gold is panned out, when buttocks are sunburned, when little Jimmy’s parents return to pick him up Sunday night, when the RV couldn’t clear the drive through window at Cracker Barrel, and when repeated electoral losses visit the Happy Political Campers - camps breaks up.

    So, they are camps.

==What is the point of this post, exactly?==
    This is a good question.

Rich is doing her a favor. He basically gave her the lesson (on a pretty bland FB post) that you are now part of a blood sport. Just like in the Miranda warning anything you say (post) can and will be used against you in the court of public opinion. It will be taken out of context and placed into 30 second radio and tv ads. So proceed with caution and be careful what you post and say because someone is always watching or listening.

Instead of posting silly stuff on twitter and facebook, text your best friend the silly comment and have a chuckle with her. Then if it winds up in a 30 second radio ad, you know you need to find a new best friend. Good luck and as Sean Connery would say “here endith the lesson”.

  57. - O.W.L. - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 11:23 am:

He comment, BTW, is not bipartisan. She uses it to mock, not to illuminate. If she really wanted to, she could have included both parties within her statement.

    She didn’t choose to.

  59. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 11:24 am:

Rich Miller’s Sweaty Upper Lip- TV Guide captions …

She was wondering what these camps would look like. I responded in kind with the “Community” references. I guess that’s not light-hearted enough for you. Have you seen those episodes? The Repubs competing for the nominations could easily fit into some of those scripts.

  61. - walker - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 11:28 am:

Why so much mean-spiritedness surfacing lately?

(Exceptions are noticeable, and to be thanked.)

Maybe because regular CapFax commenters care about Illinois government doing well, and are so disappointed, frustrated, and disheartened these days.

But, OW, I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen you or not, but I’m willing to bet Ms. Bourne is easier to look at. Shallow, but true! Case closed.

Wow, I’m noticing a strong odor of sexism and ageism. In sum, “There, there, pretty little girl, some day you can grow up to be a REAL legislator.” I’m pretty sure her facebook post is tongue in cheek, and while I don’t think she should be immune from criticism, I think her only error here is that she didn’t use her best judgment in whether to post at all (she should not have posted). As a public figure, she should know better than to post something tongue in cheek that can be interpreted in SO many other ways. I’m wondering if this was posted to facebook by any middle-aged white guy legislator, then would everyone would be congratulating him on his Seinfeldesque insightful humor? And FYI, I’m not a Bourne supporter, nor Republican, nor female, nor young. I just don’t like the tone of many of the posts here.

    – blood sport —

Woof, the Mayor Ardis contingent is out in force today.

Rep. Bourne is an obviously ambitious person who chose the rough-and-tumble world of Illinois politics.

Given that ambition and her choice of profession, I doubt that she’s a delicate, fragile little flower. I imagine she’s plenty tough enough to handle a little ribbing.

I’d suggest the “ageism” and “sexism”‘ comes from those who seem to think that she cannot because she is a young woman.

Anyone who’s ever gotten sideways with a teenage daughter will tell you, young women are pretty tough, indeed.

@FakeAveryBourne - Sometimes, if I’m spacing out and the chanting at the rail is loud & catchy enough, I find myself chanting along in my head. #FreshmanConfessions

  101. - COPN - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 1:25 pm:

And Rep. Bourne is definitely not off limits…but Flaherty or SourKraut’s criticisms seemed far less trolling

    Caucuses are for Caucasians =====

Sorry that is not inclusive and would be inappropriate!

When a party goes into caucus do they actually party? More things to ponder!

Oh, come on, Rich…”with it” has a multi-level meaning!

Willy - maybe we should call you “Oswego Miley”, then, since you can’t stop.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone born after 1970 use that phrase

    Exactly right.

I know Avery. She ain’t no shrinking flower.

    - Team Sleep -

    There’s a joke there, but… lol

@FakeAveryBourne - Sometimes I wonder “why green and red”? Maybe we all should vote by emoji? #FreshmanSuggestion

“But like, what if two people call a color the same name, but really their eyes see different colors, man? I mean, what if your ‘Red’ is my ‘Blue’?”

“Look, the governor’s Red, so you’re Red. The governor’s against Blue, so you’re against Blue. Color coding these was supposed to make things easier, Avery, not harder…”

I am (sort of) young and female, and this feels neither sexist nor ageist to me. I think we’d definitely jump all over a young male legislator who wrote something like this, and I hope we’d show ever less mercy to an older man for having no business being on social media until he can use better judgment…

  114. - illini - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 1:58 pm:

Finally got online to see what I missed since 7 am. Obviously, a lot on all topics, but this one got my interest, and don’t know where to begin.

Willy, can we have as much fun here as we have had with Jason? Maybe Slip and Sue will post online!!

That would open the flood gates. I could never compete, nor would I even try.

Snark, with an appropriate level of honesty and humor, is badly missing in our political discourse. Thank you for keeping us on track!

    Still miss Jason though!

  115. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 2:16 pm:

    - illini -,

Today’s snark was really an outpouring of what escalates when those defenders aren’t in tune with the snarkiness and they feel the need to intervene.

Jason himself was way too serious sbkut who he thought he is and the persona he have to all of us for consumption.

“Sometimes being in on the joke leaves the humor where it belongs.” Jason let his own caricature become the running joke.

You’re a good sport, Rep. Bourne. Much respect, keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll be fine for a long time.

    OW

  118. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 2:42 pm:

    My only suggestion, Rep. Bourne;

Facebook and Twitter are forever. Treasurer Rutherford and Rep. Schock are the case studies.

    Now “The Owl’s Twitter”?

    Goodness gracious…

  119. - DuPage Bard - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 3:02 pm:

It’s a semi-funny FB post, she better have a sense of humor with the career path she’s chosen.

  121. - Keyser Soze - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 3:12 pm:

Representative Bourne is young and still has a whimsical side. Good for her.

  122. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 3:31 pm:

TS, as one of OW’s biggest fans, I do have to commend you on that one. I “can’t stop” laughing!

“@FakeAveryBourne: I’m worried about Tweeting about Oswego Willy. Afraid it might have a double meaning”

  123. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Sep 30, 15 @ 4:02 pm:
