“A Trump delegate said that?”

Thursday, Mar 3, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Mayor Rahm Emanuel was almost speechless when he was asked about a comparison of Gov. Bruce Rauner to presidential candidate Donald Trump

The mayor was reacting to a question from a public radio reporter who said an Illinois delegate for Trump to the Republican National Convention told her there are similarities between the two men. “A Trump delegate said that? He clearly didn’t get the talking points,” Emanuel said.

“This is the first time at a press conference I’d like to say I’d like to go off the record,” Emanuel said with a laugh as a dozen media members surrounded him on a stage after an expansion announcement at Chicago Shakespeare Theater. […]

“Let me say, let me answer that question with a non-answer but a bigger point. Let me, here’s what I will say: If you think Donald Trump — I don’t think Bruce Rauner, I’m not going to speak for him, would see that as a compliment,” Emanuel said. […]

“The reason I’m opposed to Donald Trump’s candidacy, there’s a lot of reasons. One particular is because he is not only dividing the Republican Party, it’s exactly how his presidency will be in dividing the United States,” the mayor said. “And I won’t say but you know, Illinois right now, while it had its divisions before, they have been exacerbated of late. And I would hope that we come together and move forward, and what I say by that, particularly as it relates to education of our children.”

Wow - that was remarkably inarticulate. It’s not hard Rahm. Donald Trump and Bruce Rauner both think they can dictate their extreme agendas. Rauner was bad for Illinois and Trump would be a disaster for America.

Rahm I concerned about a divided Republican party? Is he one?

  3. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Mar 3, 16 @ 10:36 am:

Boy, that riff between Rauner and Rahm is just festerin’, ain’t it? Just tearin’ away at the seams…

And, Rahm is probably somewhat right, while being an apologist for all the wrong they have in common.

  4. - Anonymous - Thursday, Mar 3, 16 @ 10:36 am:

    That’s unfair.

To my knowledge, Donald Trump never met with homeless kids one day, then the next day shut down homeless shelters for kids, even though dedicated, non-GRF funds for homeless shelters were sitting in the Treasury.

Roll that one around in your noggin a bit.

Meet with homeless kids one day, then shut down homeless shelters for kids the next day.

    Real people, real actions.

    That’s our governor.

So says the great unifier, Rahm. Ick!

  6. - Politix - Thursday, Mar 3, 16 @ 10:40 am:

I wish everyone would stop being so precious with their opinions on this. The similarities are fairly obvious.

    Pardon, anon 10:36 was me.

  8. - Politix - Thursday, Mar 3, 16 @ 10:44 am:

I mentioned this before, but it’s stupefyingly ironic that the IL GOP won’t back Trump, a successful billionaire businessman and “political outsider,” for the nomination.

    @anonymous:

Forgot that after he meets with the kids he heads home to the Wine and Cheese Party in Wilmetteistan, and then has a good laugh over it!

“She’s a Democrat and I’m a Republican. Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!”

  10. - Earnest - Thursday, Mar 3, 16 @ 10:49 am:

Whew, almost made me forget about the intentional destruction of social services and higher education. Personalities are so much more important than people. /snark that’s repetitive

  11. - Formerly Known As... - Thursday, Mar 3, 16 @ 10:53 am:

Did not expect Rahm to take the high road there.

    Maybe there is hope.

  12. - Langhorne - Thursday, Mar 3, 16 @ 11:06 am:

Here’s how I see it. Trump has drastic proposals, that are unachievable, but very popular. Rauner has drastic proposals, which are largely unachievable, but very unpopular.

Trump isnt even nominated yet. Rauner is, expletive deleted, already in office, failing to deal with reality.

  13. - ChicagoVinny - Thursday, Mar 3, 16 @ 11:58 am:

One difference - Trump probably has a lot more union support than Rauner. (And I say this as someone who thinks Trump must be defeated at all costs)

Rauner is the poster child on how not to elect an outsider businessman into government leadership. I’m certain Trump wants absolutely nothing to do with Rauner. Trump builds things and Rauner sucks the life out of things other build.

Trump wants to raise taxes on Rauner. Trump has no time for venture capitalists. There is a big difference between these two men. Look beyond the money and the party, and you see two completely different ways of doing things.

  16. - Mcleaniac - Thursday, Mar 3, 16 @ 2:58 pm:

    I’m
Voting for Trump because he is not the worm-like creatures that currently infest the hierarchy of the ILGOP.
