Late morning, early afternoon local precinct report

Tuesday, Mar 15, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Twitters…

Setting aside the fact that Madigan probably has that many people in each precinct (only semi-snark), I can’t help but wonder if some of those folks answered a recent CraigsList help wanted ad.

* Meanwhile

How seriously did House Speaker Michael Madigan take the Democratic primary challenge of Jason Gonzales? Early voting was up 258 percent in Madigan’s 13th Ward compared with 2008. By Sunday night, 4,396 early votes had been cast there, the second-most of any Chicago ward.

* Rep. Christian Mitchell got an assist from Bubba today

* Meanwhile, in that same contest…

From that link

Travis campaign workers were reporting ballot problems and issues related to voter supression in a number of precincts across the far-flung district, particularly at the precinct at Lawless Gardens senior housing at 3510 S. Rhodes in the 4th Ward, where Toni Preckwinkle, who’s supporting incumbent Mitchell as well, is committeewoman.

Um, why would Preckwinkle want to suppress the vote in her own ward when she’s pushing Kimberly Foxx so hard?

* This is the executive director of Common Cause Illinois…

* E-mail from a labor union official…

We have Dunkin workers trying to come over and work for us.

* Rep. Dunkin’s sample ballot…

* Illinois Review

Yesterday, the Illinois State Board of Elections met to determine what action to take regarding complaints that had been filed against Liberty Principles PAC. Specifically the matters of Jonathan & Clair Kaye & Kenneth Cabay vs Liberty Principles PAC, Inc (“LPPAC”).

Kayes and Cabay had alleged that LPPAC’s production and distribution of newspaper mailings that inform the electorate on the policy positions of various candidates were “fraudulent” and “misleading.” In addition, they alleged that the newspapers were prepared in direct coordination with state representative candidates Allen Skillicorn and current representative Reggie Phillips.

After a closed preliminary hearing on March 3, 2016, a hearing officer determined that there were “justifiable grounds” to allow for a public hearing on the issue of coordination, and the General Counsel for the State Board of Elections concurred with the recommendation on Monday.

However, the Board reversed the hearing officer’s determination in a stunning 7-0 unanimous decision (Coffrin abstaining).

Meh. He created a newspaper. He’s protected by the 1st Amendment. Move along.

* Harsh…

* Harsher…

* I need to go vote and run an errand. What are y’all seeing out there?

We have Dunkin workers trying to come over and work for us.–

I’m guessing they got their taste of that $500K in Rauner street money first.

  2. - Team America - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 10:50 am:

The Anita “rat” poster is really nasty. Thank goodness this isn’t the general, or the caterwauling about racism and sexism, and calls for accountability against the GOP, would be deafening.

  3. - Don't Worry, Be Happy - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 10:51 am:

So Dunkin doesn’t consider his race to be contested?

  4. - here we go - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 10:52 am:

Surprising that Ken Dunkin’s sample ballot includes Dorothy Brown.
Maybe they’ll be spending some time together in court :)

  5. - Almost the Weekend - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 10:52 am:

What is the point of labor sending that email? They win nothing from it. If McCann and Stratton both lose it continues to show they are out of touch. Wait until the final vote count to pat yourself on the back.

Another victim heard from. Victim of what, by the way?

    God I love Illinois politics.

  8. - siriusly - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 10:57 am:

Just to be clear - those are gun sight cross hairs on the Alvarez poster. That is a mock up of the City of Chicago anti-rodent posters. I think it’s pretty good really. A- work there

The Bill Clinton + Rep. Christian Mitchell photo is extremely notable because it is the first time many people have ever seen Mitchell smile.

  9. - siriusly - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 10:57 am:

I meant to say “those are NOT gun sight cross hairs”

I apologize for the typo. My blog commenter fake name is siriusly and I approve this correction.

  10. - TD - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 10:58 am:

Very long line yesterday at 69 Washington for same-day registration. Was around 430pm. Some folks were looking pretty discouraged at the length.

  11. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 10:59 am:

@FakeJasonGonzo - You’d have to use Craigslist too if @FakeGovRauner pretends you don’t exist every time he sees his shadow #PhonyBaloney #RauneriteWay

  12. - meh - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:00 am:

Voted a little while ago, in Chicago’s Northwest Side (Mell’s turf).

In the corner, I was greeted by a friendly Patel worker encouraging me to vote for “the best candidate.” I was encouraged by this last minute effort, and surprised I did not see any Andrade workers there (although there was a weird dude in the other corner but he was talking loudly on his phone). I probably would have switched my vote from Andrade to Patel - but I had already made up my mind, and was genuinely surprised by Andrade these past couple of months. I think he deserves another chance (was it yesterday that I read on CapFax that Rauner has made some machine incumbents like reasonable candidates? I agree - if it wasn’t for Rauner I probably would have dumped Andrade).

Everything was good when I got to vote. There were a couple of folks already voting, which was surprising because it’s usually empty. What I did see were a several women (of all ages) mostly women of color (a young Latina, an older Muslim, etc.) wearing Bernie pins coming in to vote.

However, the most interesting part this guy trying to vote. Apparently the list indicated that he had already early voted, and he could not vote again. He insisted that he had not voted yet, and so the compromise was he got a provisional ballot. I found that strange, especially because whatever list they have did not indicate that my partner (same address) had not already early voted (though he did!). So hmmm? Anyway, happy voting!

    Hang In There Willy !!!

The Trolls were after you on the earlier thread.

Lets see if they pick up on this one.

To the post - just talked to one of my election workers in Washington County - close to 25% of the registered voters had been to the polls by 11:30 - heavy Republican vote as is to be expected here.

  14. - TD - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:02 am:

@FakeJasonGonzo - I’m excited I had time to tweet this picture while @SpeakerMadigan’s Crew is dragging in voter after voter against me #JohnWooden #ActivityAchievement

As an aside, I miss @SpeakerMadigan.

  16. - Wow - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:07 am:

In the 3rd Ward Dunkin’s paid poll watchers are just sitting in their car smoking. Haven’t approached one voter yet. Money well spent Mr Proft.

  17. - VPLena - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:08 am:

I was voter #401 in Lena (3 precincts - West Point Township)at 11:30. By Comparison in 2008 total vote was 680 and 2012 was 664. I’m thinking at least 25 % higher turnout this year.

  18. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:11 am:

===Early voting was up 258 percent in Madigan’s 13th Ward compared with 2008. By Sunday night, 4,396 early votes had been cast there, the second-most of any Chicago ward.===

    Hmm.

A strong organization would know how many pluses are in that number and what plurality they are looking at come 7:00:01pm

    A strong organization would know…

I’ll leave that right there, thanks.

  19. - siriusly - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:12 am:

The Gonzo Craigslist ad is nice, but I don’t know why they would not pay more. If they paid more maybe they could attract some superstars.

  20. - siriusly - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:13 am:

OW - you’re so right. I am guessing they know exactly how many votes they have and will have. And if their numbers are off - some captains may be doing follow-up canvasses.

  21. - Nearly Normal - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:14 am:

North Normal 373 voters as of noon. More Dem ballots taken than I have ever seen in these two precincts since becoming a judge in 2008

  22. - Served - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:15 am:

Didn’t have to wait at around 7:30am, but when I left there was a line of about 10-15 people in 44th Ward. It was before my coffee so I forgot to see what # ballot I was.

  23. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:18 am:

    - siriously -

Yep. And I’m guessing a strong organization already have things broken down, by precinct, and calibrating their 3pm calls accordingly. A strong organization would…

  26. - wolf - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:23 am:

Regarding RD 26 — Jay never conceded last time and shouted the same unsubstantiated claims of voter suppression. Poll workers make mistakes with ballot type, it happens, and as her statement clearly points out, it was rectified in short order.

  27. - The Way I See It - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:23 am:

Figures that Ken Dunkin would be pushing Dorothy Brown. Two horrible elected public officials.

  28. - cdog - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:24 am:

With regard to the problem of PAC dogs in elections, the Illinois Review article link says, “In public comments, the Board indicated that there was “not clear guidance” on the issue, and that the question was “better suited to the rule-making process.” In short, the Board ruled that the matter should not proceed to full hearing.”

In other words, not in their job description. Hopefully this complaint finds another jurisdiction.

Mr. Miller says, “he’s protected by the 1st Amendment.”

I counter, he is, until he’s not.

  29. - Amalia - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:24 am:

Dunkin….eileen o’neill what???? her last name is Burke. perhaps Dunkin is spelling her name closer to that of a well known criminal defense attorney. Freudian much?

  30. - Amalia - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:25 am:

Cappelman and Tunney endorsed Anita over the weekend.

  31. - Stones - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:28 am:

Serious question for a moment…given the amount spent on Dunkin’s race will be continue to sit on the Democratic side of the aisle?

  32. - Stones - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:29 am:

Adding…that is presuming he is re-elected?

  33. - Democrat Grrrl - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:33 am:

Voted at 11:30am in Chicago’s 19th ward. 82 Dems, 1Repub had voted so far. Election judge said he was expecting larger turnout. My husband and I were only voters in the polling place.

  34. - Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:34 am:

    - Stones -

No matter today’s outcome, Dunkin will be in the House until January 2017, at the elected minimum of this current term.

Any movement towards “clarifying” the seating of Rep. Dunkin will be first addressed by the Black Caucus giving very specific guidance how things could proceed, if there’s even a need to proceed.

I think everyone, Dunkin and Rauner included, just want to get to March 16th first.

  35. - Roadypig - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:35 am:

I was voter 127 at 19:30 in my west Decatir polling place. Took my first Democratic ballot in 38 years of voting. No poll watcher or people checking off voters from lists, but we are not in McCanb’s district. Vote count higher than last primary- likely due to all of the PAC ads locally. Ballot stack was about even Demo/republican, but usually around 2-1 republican s take what you want from that .

  36. - Team America - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:36 am:

== Specifically, what is racist and sexist about it? ==

GOOD question, Precinct Captain. My point was that, were this the general (and the poster was presumably put up by the GOP opponent), the allegations would be swift and vociferous that because the Dem candidate is Latino, it must be a racist attack, and because the candidate is a woman, it must be a sexist attack. Oh, and the “crosshair” motif is clearly indicative of the GOP’s propensity toward hate and violence (and probably Trump’s fault).

But, since is Dem-on-Dem stuff, never mind.

  37. - Amalia - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:39 am:

someone made a poster of Anita that uses typical witch appearance, but at least Anita did not fake her resume like Foxx!

  38. - Stuck on the 3rd Floor - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:39 am:

Springfield, 32nd Precinct. No lines, and was somewhere north of 430th ballot dropped. Calling for nasty storms later this afternoon/evening.

  39. - Angry Chicagoan - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:45 am:

I can’t speak to today but as regards early voting it was a very busy Saturday in the 11th ward if the line when I was there was anything to go by.

  40. - NoNews - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:46 am:

Westside of Springfield, two precincts in same polling place, a short line to vote and I was voter 166 at 9:45 a.m.

  41. - dog lover - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:48 am:

O Anita got endorsed by two alderman that will get taken out too in 2019. Kim Foxx is going to win by double digits in both of their wards. Dumb move on their parts.

  42. - Elo Kiddies - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 11:52 am:

TD - the line was still around the corner just recently.

Those Anita fliers are up all over my neighborhood, and have been for a few weeks. I’m in the 46th ward, Uptown. Our Alderman endorsed Anita the other day.

The Gonzo picture reminded me of Custer and 7th Cav before moving out for the Little Big Horn.

Back to the phones on behalf of Dick Mell.

  49. - South Central Democrat - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:15 pm:

Voted in my precinct around 12:30. Small precinct in rural south central Illinois. Slightly above Republican voters so far, probably due to the Shimkus/McCarter race. Democrat turnout slightly below normal turnout. The judges felt that could be due to early voting by some people. One interesting note….when I came out I was approached by a lady asking me to complete a survey for the early exit polling data to be used by CNN, ABC, NBC, and others. First time I had ever been asked to do that. Questions dealt with Hillary and Bernie on race relations, the economy, and level of liberalism. Couldn’t tell you what the Republican one said.

  50. - Just Me - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:16 pm:

I don’t remember seeing this many yard signs surrounding my polling place in previous years.

  51. - Hamilton - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:19 pm:

===The Bill Clinton + Rep. Christian Mitchell photo is extremely notable because it is the first time many people have ever seen Mitchell smile.===

@siriusly I would take a serious look inward - perhaps your presence just doesn’t inspire mirth? Anyone who is around Mitchell, heck even a scan of his facebook page, confirms the most likely explanation of you never seeing Mitchell smile is, well: you.

  52. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:22 pm:

Let’s stick to precinct reports, please.

  53. - train111 - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:23 pm:

    Honeybear

The Chicago Tribune or Sun Times websites are pretty good at keeping up with the results

  54. - John Gregory (ex-Illinois Radio Network) - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:23 pm:

Voting in Chicago’s 35th Ward, 7th Precinct. Smooth as always, no wait at polling place (which is in a biker bar).

I was handed a sample Dem ballot which had Anita Alvarez’s name crossed out. But they obviously had to be reprinted at some point, because Jacob Meister’s name was included, not Dorothy Brown’s.

There were no signs whatsoever supporting Javier Salas’s bid for Congress against Luis Gutierrez, though this is only two blocks from Luis’s district office.

Plenty of signs for Omar Aquino’s State Senate bid, only a few for Angelica Alfaro, who has been labeled Rauner’s candidate.

  55. - illini - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:27 pm:

Honeybear - if you are looking for local/county results, check with your County Clerk. Most counties do post their results by precinct on a designated webpage. Not certain how quickly results are posted on the ISBE website. Maybe we have to rely on TV or other media to report the results. Good luck.

  56. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:31 pm:

We’ll have live results tonight, as always.

Now get back to precinct reports, please.

  57. - Cheryl44 - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:31 pm:

Early voted in the Loop, it was not bad last Friday. I stood in line maybe 10 minutes, which is somewhat crowded for early voting.

Looking at the radar, I’d say if you’re north in interstate 88 and haven’t voted, you should probably go do that now.

  58. - Arthur Andersen - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:31 pm:

Voter #667 just after noon at a 3 precinct combo on Springfield’s southwest side. That’s above average for a primary. Plenty of signs, oddly none for McCann. Young fella wearing a Bernie shirt patrolling the parking lot well within the 100 foot limit but not approaching anyone. Kinda looked like he was lost.

  59. - Anon - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:34 pm:

Far west side Springfield. 100 Republican votes four years ago. 200 by early this afternoon.

  60. - RoscoeRatMatt - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:34 pm:

32nd Ward, 38th Precinct - Alcott High School in Hamlin Park. I was voter #151 of the day, turnout was reportedly steady; 3 individuals were inside when I entered, 2 more came in while I was voting. Sad to find the precinct staffed by the same loud, pushy, argumentative folks as last election.

  61. - Regulator - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:38 pm:

Steady and slow at lunchtime; split Springfield precinct 66; mine was ballot 303.

  62. - burbanite - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:40 pm:

Honeybear it won’t be posted until after the polls close but you can usually see the detailed results on the electon commission website.

  63. - Former Hoosier - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:41 pm:

Voted on the north shore, pct. 18 (New Trier). The turnout is heavy, as was the early voting. We have a contested and somewhat nasty local election going on for three spots on the village council.

  64. - siriusly - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 12:44 pm:

Hamilton - I agree it is probably me. Thanks for making me smile!

  65. - X-Prof - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 1:01 pm:

I voted at 10:30 this morning at Cunningham 10 in Urbana. Poll workers said about 150 ballots by that time; and about 2:1 voting D vs R (they call it the People’s Republic of Urbana for a reason). There were 485 voters in the 2016 general election (86% of registered voters), so this looks on track for a heavy turnout for a primary.

I put the I Voted sticker over my doorbell to give our dog a break from the campaign workers.

  66. - said so - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 1:02 pm:

Coordination is what proft’s pac is accused of and there are more complaints that have been filed. The voters will decide now and in november if they are ok with fake newspapers paid by a pac trying to deceive them.

  67. - Cable Line Beer Gardener - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 1:04 pm:

DuPage County Bloomingdale Township #63- was voter 271 at 1:40 PM. Very few signs and very few voters - there is another polling place across the street from mine and that looked to be a bit more busy.

  68. - Colossus - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 1:05 pm:

    re: Liberty Principles PAC

I saw those newspapers down in Metro East for Paul Schimpf for State Senate. I was aghast when I saw it. It has local sports schedules, Ad Council advertisements, all the trappings of a real, little, weekly mailer paper, but it’s like a 19th century yellow journalism paper.

Rich, it’s not a newspaper and isn’t published at such, with indicia and the necessary trappings for mailed news. It’s propaganda designed to be sent to old Republicans who don’t know how to track down the company that put the “newspaper” together on behalf of a PAC. Everything about is shady as poo. How many of you have parents who are sometimes looped up on goofballs? How clear is their thinking? How comfortable are you with people mailing this crap to them?

A PAC has no business publishing a newspaper and if we’re going to pretend that’s ok then I throw my hands up in disgust at all of it.

501 in Mahomet (Champaign County) at 1PM. 254 R and 239 D, first time voter in front of me about 20, lady behind me (50ish) refused to give party request saying they couldn’t ask her that question and left. When I was in the “booth”, the next guy didn’t know which party he wanted, he was there to vote for “the guy running against Hillary”

That’s to select the type of ballot you want to vote for. That’s nothing out of the ordinary.

  79. - Tec - Tuesday, Mar 15, 16 @ 1:55 pm:
